Beautiful place but extremely cold room which should have been heated before we arrived. Fabulous dining room and attentive service. The rooms were too cold in Gatehouse. Food was luke warm for 1 person and inadequately dealt with. Red wine far too cool and again results of complaint poor.

We liked the look of the hotel from outside & surroundings. Would have liked to stay in the main building of the hotel, as we needed to put on our coats to go for breakfast etc. Bathroom heater did not work and there was no pressure on the shower. We also had to wait 30 minutes to be seated for breakfast (we were offered tea, coffee etc in bar area, so that was okay.)

It is a beautiful building and the receptionist was really friendly and helpful. The shower was cold and about as much use as a mouse spitting on you. The rooms were pretty cold too due to ill-fitting doors. We also put our room service card out and noone collected it meaning we got no breakfast.

Excellent friendly staff and comfortable rooms. Quality of food was excellent. Ambience was lovely and beautiful public areas Spotlessly clean Portions of starters too small (only two very small blue cheese balls in the blue cheese balls starter!). Why not have fires in the fireplaces - this would add so much luxury. Single occupancy rates too high

We knew the hotel and were very happy to see a reduced rate room available so I snapped it up. We were not dissappointed- the hotel is an oasis of luxury in the rather bleak surroundings of Telford. The budget room was a small double on the eves up an old wooden staircase- very cosy and romantic if basic. All in all I would recommend this hotel if it fits your budget- the staff are friendly and helpful and the place is spotless. No complaints. The sat nav tried to end me round the back but I know where the entrance was, so beware (if you have a Garmin) to look for the entrance next to Madeley Academy school off the B4373.

We were especially impressed by the positive and friendly attitude of the night-staff member Simon who was extremely helpful. We would like to recommend him for special commendation by his management - he was a credit to Mercure.

The setting and the old world charm. The fact that we weren't booked a room in the older section of the hotel.

The actual building and grounds on the outside were stunning. We asked for a non-smoking room and we were placed on a landing between two smoking rooms, all we could smell was cigarette smoke the whole time. Walls were paper thin and so we heard another occupant coughing his guts up all night. The room was not clean, shaving gel on the sink, a badly stained carpet and stained, unclean sheets. Such a stunning building on the outside but the inside is so poor.

Have stayed there before and always well looked after......the extras of flowers and chocolates were in our room on arrival....makes for a good start to the weekend. The recommended italian restaurant for saturday was very nice. Will stay again.........good value for money. Not enough restaurant staff as friday night was full, and the stairs up to the 2nd floor are quite daunting if you don't like very high steps!!! They forgot our champagne on arrival, and bar staff seemed inexperienced....but friendly

Exploring the house: we loved the ancient 15th century building with it's winding staircase, huge fireplace, carved chests and mullioned widows, the lake with small waterfall and flock of ducks, and the well-planted gardens. Breakfast in the dining room was expensive although it was possible to get smaller snacks in the bar at any time. Outside steps had no markings, more in tune with the ambiance but difficult to see in the dark. The original stairs to upper floors were charming but uneven – glad we had a room on the ground floor with our mobility problems.

The bed was roomy and comfortable, the room clean and spacious. The card key did not work. It was frustrating not to be able to get into my room. The staff were a bit lax with a couldn't care attitude. I was there for my daughters wedding at 2.30pm and could not go to my room until 2pm, this did not give me time to unpack properly and it was a good job I had family near by so I could get changed and ready.

Ideal place to stay for the Iron Bridge area. Nice setting and old world charm. The hotel was perfect for our 3 night break. However, insufficient staff meant that we had to ask for items up to 3 times e.g. milk, butter. Staff could not cope with the number of people for breakfast. The service we had was very poor due to this which was unfortunate.

The location was quiet and the whole concept of the conversion to an hotel was interesting. My room was clean, comfortable and well appointed. The reception desk had no record of my booking when I arrived. Having booked a table for 8.15 in the restaurant for dinner (time suggested by the receptionist), and been asked to wait in the bar with several other guests while tables were prepared, I eventually gave up at 9.15 and went out to find some food. Nobody came to the bar to advise us of waiting time or apologise for the delay. Breakfast the following morning was almost as shambolic. At present it's a waste of a good facility, which has potential.

Ideal setting and beautiful old building. The fact that there was a very low beam over the bath where the shower head was, so made showering almost impossible. Plus the sink was tiny so washing was not a good option either. There had been a wedding on the Saturday night and so breakfast was not possible either as the queue was huge!

Excellent hotel, staff, rooms, restaurant and location all first class. A pleasure to spend 4 days there. Ideally situated for visit to Ironbridge with its many attractions and beautiful scenery. Totally happy with our stay, our friends had squirrels partying on their roof but their room was changed without quibble and the squirrels went on partying!!
