The staff were very friendly, chef was good, plenty of hot water. The hotel needs a refurbishment, botch jobs everywhere, nasty musty smell throughout the hotel. Our bed was a disgrace and back breaking, the bathroom was old fashioned, tiles slapped on over old ones, filthy light in the ceiling. Heater in the room didn't work, duvets pathetically thin. We were cold and tired and luckily on the second night the hotel receptionist got us a working heater. Dinners were good but breakfast was rudimentary and unpleasant. I would never stay in this hotel again.

Met all our requirements for an overnight stay. Room comfortable, breakfast good, conveniently situated and parking excellent. The only slight down-side was no hot water on the afternoon / evening of our arrival.

i like the location of the commodore, the staff are very helpful and very friendly. i would stay there again anytime. for an old lady like me i could not have a bath as there was nothing to hold on to. but that was my fault as i did not enquire in the first place so i have no complaints.

Good value for money, and an excellent breakfast. It was not full of coach parties like the Glen Usk next door, and has real ale in the bar. Free wi-fi Internet coverage, while based in the public areas, extended easily to the first floor bedrooms. Restaurant has no atmosphere, and the menu looked expensive, so I ate at a nearby bistro, "Jules", which was excellent and busy. There are very few other eating (and drinking) options in the town. Ground-floor layout is a maze, and reception is only open at limited times.

Friendly reception - told us about the area and where to eat etc. Didn't push the Commodore but gave it as one of the options. Room large, clean and welcoming. First impressions are that it is quite dark and gloomy. Room fine but plumbing noisy and takes a while for hot water to come through ( we had to get someone to check it out as initially thought we would be without hot water).

Other than poor quality sausages the breakfast was OK Off hand staff People shifting furniture round through the bar after 11pm 'Electric' toilet made loud churning noises at random through night Very shabby decor and quite dusty Lights switched off on stairs

Pleasant, adequate facilities and helpful staff. A lovely breakfast each morning. Good parking on-site and connection to internet was very helpful also. I didn't like scruffy carpet in the bathroom and the hotel decor is rather tired but at the budget price of the room it was acceptable.

The staff were helpful and the service in the breakfast room was very good, as indeed were the breakfasts. The hotel was shabby and needs some money spending on it, especially in the bedroom areas, to bring it more up to date. It could be a very nice hotel if some thought was given to the little things such as touching up paintwork, deep cleaning the carpets, providing more comfortable beds. However, we got what we paid for as it was cheaper than any of the others we looked at and was sufficient for our 2 night stay.

Easy parking. Room was very dirty - net curtains were black with dirt. The floors hadn't been hoovered and were covered with a previous occupant's rice dinner. I was late checking out - was suppsoed to open reception at 8.00 but receptionist late.

Price, nice staff, happy for you to check in late, grand building, ease of parking, in centre of town. Perhaps needing a little work but for the price in a lovely old Victorian building it's an excellent deal and great location.

My business is within the pet industry so my dogs always travel with me, I find the Commodore one of the most Pet Friendly Hotels with the staff being very kind to the dogs. This makes a business trip far more enjoyable.
