Harpenden House18 Southdown Road, AL5 1PE Harpenden (Show map) Good, Score from 145 reviews“The rooms were comfortable and nicely decorated. Staff seemed happy and willing to help.”
Hannah,
Torpoint
Relax in this former 18th Century Georgian Convent School, situated in the picturesque town of Harpenden. This attractive Grade II heritage-listed building overlooks East Common, accessible to London, St. Albans and Luton Airport. The hotel grounds are particularly nice, while stylish public areas include a restaurant with an impressive decorative ceiling. Some bedrooms and a large suite are located in the original house although most of the accommodations are in a more recent wing. The hotel is located with easy access to highway M25, just within 25 minutes of central London, with easy access from highway M1 (exits 9 and 10) or by direct train to Kings Cross Train Station. Hotel Rooms: 76, Hotel Chain: Classic British Hotels.

If it were not for the empathetic and excellent approach of the duty manager, we would never recommend this hotel to anyone. However, because the duty manager displayed good problem solving skills which pacified us both despite the dreadful situation we found ourselves in, we would recommend this hotel with caution. Booked well in advance of stay. Booked dinner for 7-30pm. Arrived to find hotel hosting a wedding. Told we would n ot be able to dine until 8-45pm. Room allocated to us was a few metres from the wedding disco. Hotel fully booked so we could not be moved. Bad management. Our room should have been allocated to one of the wedding guests, and we should have been placed in a room well away from the noise as we needed a good nights sleep before a flight from Luton airport the following morning. Room was dark and smelt damp and there was no soap so had to use shower gel to wash hands.

Location. Very close to family and access to town. Did not like the room outside the main hotel & the breakfast buffet served across from the main hotel - buffet served. & food having to be carried across. Better service on the last day with breakfast in the main hotel & waited table for breakfast.

location was close to my son and family. I do not drive so needed to be near their home. This hotel was the only one I could find in the area. Very expensive for a mediochre hotel in the outer reaches of Greater London. ( Nearly £150 per night ). Certainly not a "country house" hotel. The bedroom I was allocated on the first night had no hot water in the shower - in fact the hot water control had been dismantled ! The radiators in the room had not been switched on, the room never warmed up properly. I noted also that the radiators in the corridor outside the room were not switched on - in mid winter. I was transferred to another room for the second night, which was satisfactory - although the radiator in the bathroom did not work. I was given a 20% discount on the price for the first night after complaining.

Comfortable room with tea/coffee, limited toiletries, decent hairdryer, ironing. Main hotel building is an attractive country house, with plenty of free parking (unless there are two big events on in the hotel). There is a nice bar with squasy sofa seating. Nice setting, a few minutes walk from Harpenden which has a mixture of boutiques and interesting shops and cafés. Easy to find, signposted off the St Albans Road. Having read the other reviews previously, I would mention that most of the accommodation is in separate, modern annexes, and whilst perfectly comfortable and more than adequate for our purposes, if you are looking for a country house experience for a romantic weekend, this may not be it. Also, be aware that it may be quite a walk to the main hotel building in inclement weather. The hotel hosts a lot of events, 2 the Saturday I was there. The event I attended seemed to be in the hotel´s restaurant meaning it would not be available to independent guests. Breakfast, as with many hotels, did not warrant £14 per person. After some consultation, it was included in my room rate as they were doing a special rate that I had been unaware of for the event. There were lots of staff on during breakfast, but service was slow – had to ask 3 times for toast, twice for tea/coffee top-ups. Unless it´s included, I would skip breakfast and find something in the town.

Harpenden House is in a very convenient location, close to the railway station and also the local shops and restaurants. Our room was extremely spacious and comfortable and the ensuite facilities were excellent, shower etc. Breakfast excellent also and very courteous staff, especially on reception.

I thought all the staff were very good, helpful and attentive. I thought the family room/house! Was brilliant for families. If Im being really really picky, I thought the rooms were not as well groomed as they could of been, for example, there were stains on carpets, walls, ect. But the size was very accommodating.

Really great location and good value for money stay. We would stay there again and would recommend to others. Generally the decor was fine but it could do with a bit of a paint throughout. Generally the decor was fine but it could do with a bit of a paint throughout. There is no gym inside the hotel building but you do have access to one across the green

Very peaceful. The water from the hot tap was very very instantly hot and it scolded my daughter's hand when she went to use it.

Staff polite and helpful General tiredness and lack of attention to detail eg Room 80 had approximately fifty percent of lightbulbs in bedroom & bathroom either missing or not working. The hotel caters for wedding partys no arrangement to service room saturday afternoon rather than morning when guests were preparing for big occasion - should / could be a check in option. Generally disappointed

The staff were very courteous and friendly. Nice location.. Unfortunately there were a few broken items in the room, which I reported to the receptionist as I was leaving: 1. Cracks in the bathroom sink 2. Broken Shower door 3. Iron badly needed descaling and stained my shirt..
