I have stayed here 3 times. Enjoyed the relaxation on every visit. This time we came with friends. Room 112 was very comfortable, clean and everything one could need for a 2 day stay was provided. Shrewsbury is a lovely town, and the hotel is perfect for a w/e break. We ate in the dining room on the first night. A n enjoyable experience, if expensive. Head waiter? A joy!! I note in other crits. People complain about creaky floors! What do they expect in an hotel of this age?? Provided people are aware of others above and below, I do not find this a problem. The parking is a little difficult, although we found a space, other drivers can be selfish in their positioning. .

relaxing lounge area the restaurant manager needs a personality transplant. His attitude to my son and I was absolutely appalling. He treated us both like inferior imbiciles. Incidently I am a managing director of a fairly substantial food manufacturing company and my son is privately educated.Unfortunately my son forgot his casual trousers and went to the restaurant in his tracksuit bottoms(although smart). He formed an instant impression that we werent good enough for his restaurant. Fortunately his table waiter was excellent.

The old-fashioned comfort (I.E. log fires in very comfortable lounge and general good feeling in all the public spaces). The room was also harmoniously furnished in keeping with the historical roots of the hotel, and of a good size. The service staff all seemed happy in their jobs Some tiny details: shower not very good. Bedroom floors creaked really loudly. Main lounge often rather full due to non-residents use (which is a good idea in principle; but difficult if not room for residents; other lounges less welcoming, with the bar throbbing to a low beat...

The staff were friendly and helpful and the service in the dining room was very good. The thing I wasn't happy with was having no choice of potatoes (except new) and having to pay extra for them as well as the vegetables. This is very petty and took the edge of a good meal. Also the staff in the bar areas were slow to clear tables that had been vacated.

We really enjoyed our stay at the Lion Hotel and would certainly go again and recommend it to our friends. Next time though, I would choose a room which is far away from the lift as it is very noisy. Although it is turned off at 11.45 pm and 7.45 am it is no use if you go to bed early. Unfortunately the week-end we stayed it was very full and staff struggled a little but it did not spoil our week-end but I can imagine if you were on a short fuse it would! A bonus was that we were upgraded to a exxecutive twin which was great.

The room where we ate breakfast The bed was comfortable I complained and they knocked half off the bill (though I didn't want to pay for being kept awake all night by a circular saw) I didn't like the circular saw that was used all night behind the hotel so that we couldn't sleep at all ! I didn't like the heating system that was also adding to the noise I didn't like the staff at breakfast who couldn't think for themselves, giving us tea, toast and us having to ask for the milk, butter etc I didn't like the bathroom with tired lino that needed throwing out I didn't like the price, it was double the price of what it should have been

Good atmosphere in the reception/lounge areas. (Tasteful festive look.) Staff helpful and courteous. Excellent central location with adequate parking. Service at breakfast slow - staff seemed overstretched. We had trouble getting proper toast and returned our 'toast' twice as it was more like slices of bread. Just as well we weren't in a hurry! We had reserved a table for 8, but we were so squashed that we resorted to piling up plates and cutlery in order to make room for our hot food to be served. Our room was a little tired - upholstery slightly frayed, one tap had lost its 'cold' cap. As we were preparing for bed at about 11.00pm, there was a lot of noise from some kind of machine and glass bottles being disposed of.

A beautiful building on the outside. We had a room at the back so were away from the usual Shrewsbury traffic noise. A good breakfast. The room above us had very creaky floorboards so we heard every footstep. The lighting was very dim and it was difficult to read. The room was nicely furnished and a good size but the finish in the bathroom was poor.

The first night we were kept awake all night by the kitchen fan, and what sounded like someone running a bath all night! We complained and were moved to a quieter room the next day!

This was our 4th stay over 25 years. The hotel's positioning and ample garage are just right for shopping in Shrewsbury. There's been a successful refurbishment in the last few years which has not gone over the top. Our room, though small, was quiet and had 2 comfy chairs and the bathroom was big. The dining room has been improved and the food was excellent though it might be a little formal for a large hotel. However, Sunday breakfast was chaos. Open 8.00 to 10.00 the staff were overwhelmed soon after 9.00am and couldn't deal with serving the large numbers. We waited 20 mins for tea and coffee and over 40 mins for the cooked breakfast. The hotel should operate a buffet breakfast if it can't manage to serve. When it came though, the porridge was terrific with a banana and maple syrup.

That it is individual unpolished and different. It cares about its history and its clients. It could do with the odd bit of tender loving care here and there - a deep clean of the lift for instance - but the food is lovely and room service fun. The one thing that could easily be improved are the breakfasts - they are way below the rest of the menu in quality and imagination. An easy fix but someone should have a go. Walls are a tad thin but then its an old building and everything creaks. Its quite unusual to experience single glaing these days :-)

I liked that it was steeped in history as part of our stay in Shrewsbury was to investigate the cultural aspects of the city. We asked for morning papers. They weren't booked. The shower in room 214 was erratic and swing betweeen hot and cold so we didn't use it all the second day . The hotel was great but does need a little more sharpening up.
