Cotswold Gateway HotelCheltenham Road, OX18 4HX Burford (Show map) Excellent, Score from 164 reviews“Off-street parking; facilities; food; location; friendly staff; very welcoming atmosphere; we were really pleasantly surprised to find that when we arrived we were upgraded to a four-poster room!!! Even though it was only one night, it was brilliant and we will definitely be staying again! We definitely recommend it to anyone staying in the Cotswolds”

Smarden
Serving local produce, offering a friendly welcome, efficient service and a pleasantly relaxed atmosphere, this former 18th century inn is ideal for those seeking to explore the Cotswold region. Originally a resting and overnight point for travelers, Cotswold Gateway Hotel still performs the same function, but in a more modern context. It offers the convenience of ample parking in a private parking lot at the rear of the hotel, and a restaurant and bar open daily to both residents and non-residents. Each of the 20 bedrooms has a private bathroom and many useful facilities. A four-poster room and a family room are also available. Whether you try traditional ales in the bar, a freshly brewed coffee in the coffee shop, or a meal in the air-conditioned restaurant, you are sure to enjoy your stay amid beautiful English countryside. The owners and staff of the hotel provided superb service for our stay. They were all professional but friendly offering information on an as needs basis. Their friendliness added greatly to our time there. The food offered a variety of items prepared with culinary skill. The location was close to the town's shops and sites but far enough to be private and quiet.

I was lucky enough to get upgraded to the four poster bedroom, as they had only one room left when I checked in. It's gorgeous with dark wood and white sheets, and the room is very comfortable. The staff are very helpful, understanding (they were kind enough to help carry the luggage up the stairs) and help give the hotel a comfortable feeling, which it does, comfy and suited to the relaxed environment of the Cotswolds. The restaurant downstairs is excellent too. The locals recommend it, and I sampled their starters which were very satisfying and delicious (lobster bisque and crab salad). Splendid morning spread too, with continental and English versions served, with someone always on hand to ask you if you'd like tea/coffee and toast. Free wifi throughout the hotel, and room service was very prompt, as was kitchen, which originally estimated an hour, but arrived much earlier. Thoroughly a good stay and would come again! There's no lift, so if you do have heavy luggage, you will have to drag yours up the stairs, or ask for assistance, if you're a solo traveller.

I thought the atmosphere of the place was pleasant and cosy. The decor is a little old school, but I guess that adds to the charm of the place. However it still managed to fit in with the local surroundings. I didnt eat an evening meal there, but the breakfast and breakfast room were spot on. Great sausages! The twin room I had was adequate. I'd rate the one night experience a 7-10. I thought the floor boards were a bit squeeky, and so often heard the people in the room above walking about. I realise its not an easy problem to sort out in an old property, but something that should be considered during the next refurb maybe. Although, i'm a very light sleeper so that doesnt really help. I didnt like the old school 'dial' telephones in the room. Bit pointless really.

Clean and friendly. Good restaurant. Parking facilities were good Presumably due to the age of the building, the floorboards were exceptionally creaky. We considered that noise from the people in the room above us was excessive and irritating - I guess the hotel can't control their occupants though

The room was vewy spacious and airy. It was also very comfortable, well decorated and clean. Even though the hotel is an historic building the facilities and standard of the hotel overall were very good.

Great atmosphere, and fantastic 'pub' food. Great menu for both meat lovers and vegetarians. This is the second time we've stayed here at just over a year between visits. Same friendly attentive staff - Initially came on a business trip, and thought the hotel would be a great place for a weekend break in the future, sure enough it did not disappoint. Burford is an amazing little town. Only room for improvement would be the addition of face cloths/flannels in the room (may have been an omission on this occasion). The food presentation was only let down by 'wrapped' butter on the plate. This is a picky 'pet-hate' of mine - just seemed strange given that sauces were served in really memorable little copper pots. That was fabulous! Would suggest a Ramekin for butter/spreads.

Well situated for exploring Burford. We stayed on the ground floor by the courtyard and as we had our dog with us this was very convenient. It was also well situated to take the dog for walks. We also enjoyed the food in the evening and at breakfast there was plenty of choice and it was enjoyable. Would definately return.

The location is superb. The Staff offered the most comprehensive, professional and polite service. The room was wonderful and breakfast service was faultless. I often stay in hotels at home and abroad and this hotel is a rare breed in that it is unique. You really get the impression that the family who run it along with their staff really care about the success of their Guests' stay.

Food was expensive but excellent quality.Staff were helpful and nothing was to much trouble. We arrived early and our room was ready and they allowed us access to the room. Not a hotel for a long term stay, lounge facilities were small and no recreation facilities etc available.
