The hotel is in a great position - and has some good features. A lovely old ceiling in the bar. This hotel would be really good but isn't because it seems to have had no money spent on it. Everything felt really cheap and down at heel. It was rather depressing really. Not many hotels I go to have a notice on the front door saying that bad behaviour won't be tolerated! The breakfasts were horrible - mushrooms and tomatoes tinned, It's such a pity because this could be a great hotel, but it needs some investment and good management.

The price and ample parking space. The room was 'tired' and very noisey, the carpet was heavily stained and the bathroom towels did not smell very fresh.

The very strong smell of bleach in the room, we checked in about 3.00pm and the smell was really overpowering, bleach is not a cleaner it is for removing stains. I am a manager of an tourist attraction and I do not allow my staff to use bleach, the last thing a customer wants to smell is bleach.

Central location.Large room.Plenty heating and hot water.Good breakfast available. Banging windows due to very windy conditions and old sash and case windows and single glazed.Because of central location very noisy in the late evenings from people going home and in the early morning due to traffic.

Staff were very professional and helpful. It is looking its age and was a bit smelly. I appreciate it will cost a lot to recarpet but I think that would improve conditions greatly.

Not much. The central location was fine, and if all you want is somewhere to sleep in comfort, the hotel is adequate. The following will give a flavour of the state of the hotel: When we arrived at 7.30pm, the chef had gone home as he was bored. This happened each night; nobody eats there in the evening. The bar was unstaffed and we had to turn on the lights. We were the only people using it. The receptionist, who was the only member of staff on duty, served us. The 'restaurant' was the size of a smallish cafe, and food (which was OK) was set out buffet style. The buffet trays were above naked flames, so that the airless room was far too hot to be comfortable. The room had no windows to open. This hotel was plainly a very good one in years gone by, but is currently poorly run. It has the potential to make it an excellent hotel, but needs to be managed by somebody with ambitions and vision. Currently they are just managing gradual decline.

Location in the centre of town, free parking Although the bed, towels bathroom were clean, the room itself was in a poor state and in need of refurbishment. No security staff on duty to prevent drunken residents from roaming the corridors shouting and swearing abuse all through the night.

The location was really challenging being in the area of Carlisle that is well known for late night clubs and rinking. The road outside the Hotel is shut to traffic at night and the noise level not condusive to travelloer needing a good nights sleep. The building is tired and very run down and seems more suited to large coach trips. The more negative reviews were sadly accurate in their description.

Weeds growing on the entrance canopy window frames rotting Not a place if your feeling depressed may push you over the edge.would recommend a travel lodge for same price Needs gutting to be honest

We've stayed at the County Hotel on a few occasions, just for weekend breaks, however our last stay was our anniversary and I asked for a room upgrade at my expense. We were given a suite at no extra cost which was very much apprieciated, and also indicated to me that they do remember past guests and reward them when possible.Rooms were clean and comfortable, location superb[a stones throw from the train station]We'll definatley be returning. Not that it bothered us, but because of it's central city location it may be a bit lively outside on occasion.

Other than the staff I did not like anything. Got in late afternoon, hotel has a peculiar smell about it, plus the smell of dry rot or something, went to have evening meal to be told the chef was not on. Then at night we could not sleep for rattling windows, not only in our room, but from the room next door! This was ridiculous.

The staff were friendly and very helpful. The room was clean, however the ensuite bathroom was very dated. The shower was iinadequate, took 5miutes toget a supply of water through the shower head. The toilet and cistern were not fastened to the wall or floor.

Ideally situated for easy shopping and sightseeing around the city. Undergoing extensive refurbishment by the Cairn group the new look rooms are clean modern and spacious. When the bathrooms are done as well it will be lovely. The County is always toasty warm :) Breakfast is very poor value. Same price as Little Chef without Hestons magic touch! £5 pp would be fair. Hotel security is non existant. We were woken 2am by a fellow guest playing the piano.... Very badly. Unfortunately he was directly above us, we heard his drunken progress through the hotel to his room where after a lot of crashing banging and swearing he passed out. Saturday 4.30 am we were awoken by fellow guests shouting screaming swearing bashing doors down and fighting. Also played the piano at 5.10am. The County needs to get security I have never experienced this before. Lock the piano be a good move
