The hotel was only a short distance from the main town and a very pleasant walk. The bedroom was nice and large and airy and the ability to be able to open a window meant that we could regulate the temperature to suit ourselves. The room was difficult to find as you had to go up one flight of stairs then across another flight but the numbering was not easy to follow. We had to wait an awful long time for hot water to flow through to shower or wash. Very little shelf space in the bathroom to put our things on, and there was limited dinner service on the night we arrived because of a function which meant we had to stop en-route to eat and arrive very late

It suited our needs for a wedding we attended The bedrooms were disappointing, the building is old and grand and you were expecting the rooms to be decorated and furnished to a similar standard, I would have expected to pay around £45 not £94 for the room we were given, the bed was very small as doubles go and was quite uncomfortable, the bath towels were however of good quality and ample size which makes a pleasant change.

The decor is lovely, and feels homely, the breakfast offers a wide taste for everyone. In a lovely location. The rooms can be very cold and the shower didn't work very well the hot and cold taps were also the opposite way round.

The location The hotel is in a poor state although the public spaces are fine. The bedroom although a fair size was poorly furbished with peeling wallpaper and a depressing feel. Breakfast was mean with service only fair.

Pleasant room. Poor or non existent signage to find your way around the hotel. Extreme noise from function room below. Complaint resulted at first in being fobbed off with dishonest promise of when function would end. Breakfast arrangements were chaotic.Poorly co-ordinated waiting staff, no information about what to do,long wait for service, disjointed inefficient way of working seemed to be hampering delivery of service. This was not what one expects of a hotel of this calibre.

We liked the position and grounds, despite some of the grounds appeared to have been sold off for housing. The car park is a fair way from the hotel, but well lit. The hotel decor is good and our passage and room had just been decorated. Room was excellent but no view at the back only on to a wall and new houses. Evening meal was expensive. The breakfast was 'so/so' due to no fried eggs, tasteless scrambled eggs. Poor sausage, tinned mushrooms and poor beans. Bacon was good. Crockery although white did not match. For the price it was a good stay but not for anything more expensive. Matching crockery should be used at breakfast. Poor fried breakfast. Only had milk in our room on one day. No bath foam on the second night. Minor niggles but should be put right. Main complaint was the dividing wall between bedroom 137 and 138. We could hear them talking next door, and they were only talking normally. They were talking while 11:30 pm and began next morning at 06:30am. When we mentioned this at reception the comment was that this was the first he had heard of it!! Come on, be truthful.

The staff were very helpful and polite especially the waiter we had for our evening meal on New Years Eve! The hotel is in nice grounds and the canopy and red carpet added to the occasion with there being a Ball and it being New Year celebrations. The breakfast was good although we had to keep pestering the waiter staff for more coffee and toast as we were a party of 7 people. The Brasserie was nicely furnished and decorated for our meal. Our room was a family room and is in need of updating! Our son had to sleep on a sofa bed which was very uncomfortable as I ended sleeping on it! There were only 2 mugs left in the room for 3 people to share. Our son wanted a shower and there was no hot water so we had to make do with a bath! We booked 3 rooms as a family and we were all well spaced apart and the older generation ( in their 70's) given a room on the top floor! Food was ok but overall the entire package was overpriced!

We had booked to stay for 3 nights but left after one as the room was freezing there was no heating on and were just offered a fan heater which wasn't suffient in the high ceiling ed room the bathroom ceiling leaked water on to the bathroom floor the bath screen was black with mould there was no milk or sugar in the room and although quite nicely decorated it was very sparse no tissues no directory of the hotel no pen and paper and the tea mugs were dirty and cracked and never saw any management thoroughly disappointed and spoiled our short break

The room was superbly spacious, the bathroom was lovely. The building was very nice indeed, the bar area and dining area were also very good indeed. Parking was good, and it was in a very nice location. The staff were all friendly and helpful. Breakfast was delicious and well laid out and served. Very good value for money. Quite a few little things. In the room, the cold tap on the bath did not work, the bath ran at a trickle and took about one hour to fill. The room was quite cold and the single radiator was not enough to heat such a large room properly. The tv had only a selection of channels rather than freeview which is standard in most hotels these days. The clock in the room did not work. Attention to detail was poor. The service in the restaurant was pretty poor. We were the only diners and waited an age on every course. Two of us ended up giving up on coffee and mints as we had been sitting at the meal for about two and a half hours and couldn't stand it anymore. The food was lovely though, if a tad overpriced. Overall, with a bit more care and attention this hotel could be really top class.

The free wi-fi was very good. It allowed me to book another hotel when I wished to change my reservation - see below. The hotel was in a very poor state. Our room was cold, had no tv access (the change over to digital signal was cited as the reason). The toilet blocked after the first usage. The loo and the permanently open window were sorted by the staff but the room was such poor value for money. There are other rooms being renovated but these were offered at the same price, so I asked for a reduction in our rate. When we checked out we were given a reduced rate, but this still was an over-payment for the state of the room. The staff were helpful but the hotel is seriously under- staffed. The deputy manager seemed to be dealing with everything!

The location was very good We were given a room to find someone was still using it then given another room and yes the same thing happened this was also still occupied. The weekend was to celebrate our silver wedding anniversary. There seemed to be a shortage of staff when we went for breakfast. We had to wait for plates for hot food, crockery etc.Overall we had nice weather and the hotel is in a nice location, but a little pricey .

“It was a great experience - it was full of history and had a really interesting book about the hotel in the room. We had a really fun time pretending we were living in 1910 - the dining room is particularly ornate and luxurious, with awesome food. We also had a good time in the swimming pool, as well as exploring the vastness of the hotel and its grounds. I can see why it's been a top choice of Prime Ministers for a century!” Roland, York |
