This historic building was once visited by Charles Dickens for his public readings. It offers a Dickens-themed restaurant, light, modern rooms with private bathrooms, and a themed bar.
Score from 415 reviews Good
Booked a room with a shared bathroom, room was nice enough with the usual coffee and teas, clean although a little tired looking in parts. On the whole the staff were friendly, pleasant and a joy to deal with. Location is good, abound a 10 minute walk to central reading.
The cleaner came into my room whilst I was sleeping and woke me up. Check out is at 11, I heard someone opening the door and despite me making it clear I was sleeping they still opened it up. The eagerness to turn over the room first thing annoyed me; there weren't any do not disturb signs either... to be honest, if I was staying for any other purpose than to have a night out this would not have been a problem. Also, walls are very thin so the place is very noisy internally.
Location and size of room
Poor cleanliness, room decor and fittings outdated, wifi erratic, breakfast ok but not great
Cheap and handy for weekend trip
Dirt Smell Uncomfortable beds Poor value
Some Wi-Fi connectin but not without interruption
Paid in full £415 approx, all I got was the room, shared bathroom and no breakfast. Staff not very professional - nothing explained unless you ask
Price eas probably relective of quality.
Room very dated and overall in need of work
location helpfull staff
crumbling paster everywhere steep stairs old equipments
Quiet location but 15 minutes walk fron the city centre. English breakfast cooked for the guests on request
Not much confortable but cheap. Cleaning should be improved and shower upgraded. there was little pressure and problems with regulating the temperature (in room 6)
cleanliness, breakfast, plenty of tea and coffee provided in room .
no bar /lounge area
Clean room & ok breakfast although greasy You pay for what you get and that's what you get here
We stayed in family room and if you shut the bathroom door you couldn't get out again. Brut force was needed & then it was a struggle. People in room above us were partying until 6am ish so not much sleep was got
location of the hotel in respect of its proximity to the town area. good b/fast.
the room was dimly lit and dingy. the Curtains were a disgrace with curtain rings missing and curtain was far too long for the window. there was mould in the shower grouting. no shaving light. the bed was lumpy and uncomfortable with grit on the sheets. the carpets throughout the hotel were grubby. it seemed to be old barrack room furniture in the room. one set of lights in the bar area of the dining room was precarious with water stain and loose plaster around the fitment. this hotel needs a quality inspection.
Breakfast, convenience to the venue I was going to.
Access to car park, narrow staircases, peeling paintwork
room was pleasant, cosy, clean morning breakfast was excellent value
hallways and corridors needed brightening up , real plants outside gardens and patios cleaned up to look inviting.
The Facilities, cleanliness
Location was within a quiet street but also within easy walking distance to the town centre. WiFi access very useful and no problem with signal. Plenty of very hot water although the bathroom was in need of attention, dirty window blind and the cistern was faulty. Staff on Reception were polite, friendly and helpful.
Our double room was in serious need of an update, very tired and sad. The bed was positioned next to the wall which only gave access from one side, ok if you are a gazelle. The TV was a very old, small one held on a bracket at ceiling level which made it virtually impossible to watch and had only one channel which happened to be football on the night we stayed. The radiator turned itself on while we were out which made the room very uncomfortable and did the same again in the early hours waking us to a very hot and stuffy room. Sorry but wouldn't recommend or revisit.
Easy enough to locate
Had to pay any extra £20 to allow my friend visit me in my room for a couple of hours
Not clean, poor decoration
Location was great staff at frontiers were helpful and on the ball. Room was ok for what I paid. What you see is what you get.
Breakfast left a lot to be desired.I asked for 3 items and got one.Did not bother eating breakfast on subsequent days after. The room and shared bathroom especially look like they have not been thoroughly cleaned in a while. Outside the hotel..overgrown lawns.Dumped springboard. Maybe that is reflected in the price.
Staff were pleasant Breakfast was nice Location was good
Wafer thin walls with the building next door meant I could hear two men talking half the night in the apartment next door and therefore got little sleep
Able to come and go as you please, WiFi was good, nice a quick. The bed was surprisingly comfortable! Overall staff were good, the only thing letting this place down is that they need to make some simple changes and have a makeover of the interior.
Where do I start? The hotel needs refurbishment, dodgy decor and holes in the walls down the corridor for the price of a room this needs attention! We spent 1st night unable to sleep by being kept awake by the room above's bedroom antics. Then 2nd night we stayed we were kept awake by screaming child and then in the morning the child and family where constantly banging doors and shouting. Breakfast was appalling, I had under cooked sausages in fact they were raw and mushy on the inside and the fried egg was just about edible the rest; beans and some canned tomatoes were a over microwaved mush! Yuck!
Wi-Fi Speed Good
Room had no sound proof, you could hear the neighbour snore and other noise-I could not sleep. Bed was very uncomfortable, tear on the bed cover
realy close to city centre, good WiFi
no hot water in the tab, damp raund of the window, bed not comftable, bad smell, shower in bad condition, paint from sealing come off to the floor, I will never come back to this hotel !!
It was in a quiet location
The room was dirty and many items/features were damaged/broken or torn. The whole hotel had a fusty smell and was way below the minimum standard that I would find acceptable. I had an argument when I cancelled the balance of my stay and asked for a refund for the last two nights. We eventually settled on a refund of one night. I have many photos of my room, room 3, for future reference.
