This beautiful country house from 1861, set in 28 acres of wonderful gardens, has 4 Red Stars (AA) and 4 Gold Stars (Visit Scotland) for affordable luxury 19 miles from Edinburgh. Despite its peaceful rural location, Cringletie House is only about a 30 minute drive from Edinburgh and Edinburgh Airport. The convenient, yet secluded location makes the small country-house hotel ideal for a relaxing or romantic break. With its 4 Red Stars, Cringletie House is the only AA-rated top hotel in the Scottish Borders. The restaurant with hand-painted ceiling provides excellent fine dining. The menu changes seasonally to reflect the finest, freshest produce available locally. Many dishes feature ingredients from the hotels 400-year-old walled kitchen garden. The idyllic location and beautifully furnished accommodation makes the hotel a superb base for the Tweed Valley. Hotel Rooms: 14

Beautifully quiet and green location, lovely grounds with sheep grazing just beyond the garden, woodland walks, fabulous furnishings and restful stay. The staff made every effort to be accommodating. Beautiful room but the standard double bed was rather small. However, the duty manager immediately relocated us to a larger room at no extra charge.

The staff could not do enough. They were attentive and looked only to your enjoyment of your time there. My wife is vegetarian and she did not like the vegetarian option on the menu. The staff made a lovely salad for her and served it in the residents bar. They were on hand at any time to help us and make our stay enjoyable. The public rooms are beautiful. The grounds are lovely with plenty of space to walk. We took our dog and the staff made a fuss over her and let her in to the bar area to sit with us at night. All in all we had a lovely stay. If you are over 6 ft tall be prepared to duck in and out of the bathroom if you are in the classic rooms and at the top of the house. However it is part of the character of the house

The hotel exudes an atmosphere of peace and calm - perfect for a relaxing break. The restaurant was particularly relaxing - great food lovingly served in a spacious, elegant dining room with views over the gardens and hills. The pace was perfect, not rushed, and twice we saw deer in the gardens while having dinner. Expensive, but definitely worth it. The room was also very spacious and comfortable, though we had paid for a superior room. Nothing really. The Molton Brown toiletries in the bathroom were great, but we would still have liked a bar of soap for the shower, and we would have liked a little more storage space, but these were very minor points.

we had a wonderful time at Cringletie House. It is beautiful and the staff were that great combination of friendly yet formal. Also I had a minor complaint about breakfast which was dealt with quickly and well. The hotel is well situated to visit various places such as Sir Walter Scott's home as well as Melrose Abbey etc and we did a lot of 'historical stuff' as well as enjoying the countryside in an area of Scotland we have rushed through for years without stopping. I'm glad we did and that we stayed here. It was excellent.

Very nicely appointed hotel with exceptionally nice room. We were past the serving time (20 minutes) for breakfast and were refused a meal. We were told that they must prepare the dining room for lunch.

Cringletie House is in a superb location and setting, the facilities inside and outside of the house are excellent. Inside is very welcoming with several rooms where you can sit and just relax. The luxury bedroom was everything you would expect with an extremely large and comfortable bed. The dining room has a warm atmosphere and the decoration is eye catching. The grounds are spacious and there are several walks along with a walled garden, which is lovely just to sit in. The staff are very friendly and welcoming and go that extra mile to make your stay a pleasant one. Breakfast is one of the tastiest I have ever had and the dinner was very well prepared and presented. My only complaint if you could call it that is that the dinner menu was the same for both evenings and if we had stopped a third night we would have dined elsewhere.

Good setting. Lady we dealt with most of time brilliant. Nothing too much trouble. Comfortable room Menu overpriced and llimited unless you like food of that style - my wife was struggling to find something she liked. Portions small - more than one person commented "glad of the bread rolls". Second night only one of our choice of dessert left, another "none left". Menu says "individually prepared". Breakfasts not brilliant. Mine went back first day - lukewarm. Returned seconds later having beeen microwaved with toast still on plate!. Problem with shower not dealt with (informed you am) until we reminded you on our return. Your ran out of bottled beer on our first night. I had to drink lager.

Our bedroom was lovely. The bar was cosy. The front of house staff were excellent. Nice grounds. I thought the atmosphere in the dining room was a bit too 'formal' It needed slightly louder background music, I think, so that diners didn't feel they had to speak in whispers. There was obviously a staffing shortage. Crockery and glasses not cleared away quickly in the bar. On our first night we rang for attendance in the bar - no-one came. Had to go to get FOH staff who then sent for someone who was slow to arrive. We reserved a table for 7:30 but weren't called through until almost an hour later.

Our first visit to Cringletie was in 1983 when we paused for two nights and a rest day, en route with our two children from Land's End to John O'Groats by bicycle. Our visits since have had a sentimental motivation. We miss the family run atmosphere of 28 years ago but Cringletie remains one of our favourite hotels.

You are made welcome and feel comfortable as soon as you enter the hotel. My wife is disabled,we have stayed in many hotels offering facilities for wheelchair users but none have come near to the facilities we were delighted to find at Cringletie. The room was near perfect, among other things, it included two electric adjustable armchairs along with two electrically adjustable beds We are certainly expecting to return.
