Score from 844 reviews Good
This historic building was once visited by Charles Dickens for his public readings. It offers a Dickens-themed restaurant, light, modern rooms with private bathrooms, and a themed bar.
Score from 413 reviews Good
With a superb central location, 2 minutes' walk from Reading Railway Station and the pubs on Friar Street, the hotel offers clean, comfortable rooms with air cooling.

Friendly staff, good location.
TV digital signal poor, WIFI signal poor
rooms smelt musty and dirty. tiny as well. will never stay here
Manager very polite and helpful
No heating en suite Room too small Tv remote missing Tv old
Staff were very friendly. Had booked a twin room and on arrival found that we had a single room each for no extra charge! Breakfast was good value as well. Plenty of car parking space.
If I had been staying for a longer period the room would have been too small, but as it was only for 1 night it was fine.
too small shower cold
The price was reasonable
The full English breakfast was probably as poor as I have ever been served
Parking in the back, friendly staff, excellent matras
Rooms and shower very small.
Room was comfortable and clean.
Reception area was a living room with a desk in it.
Quiet & well situated. Staff were most courteous & helpful.
Friendliness and helpfulness of owners
Noisy, frequently shouting and screaming child(ren) in next door room. Children and parents appeared to be residents as a child was being taken to school in the morning.
Slow WiFi connection.
Happy with everythinh
Near city center
Room was grotty Noisy could hear snoring and general noise. Smell of smoking from adjacent rooms breakfast greasy
- strong wifi connection
It's accessible - 10 mins walk from town centre. It has plentiful car parking in a town where parking can be difficult. Room was basic but comfortable and clean. Breakfast was available for an early start and very enjoyable. Proprietor was very friendly, perfectly happy for me to check in late and was happy for me to leave my car in the car park whilst I visited a client in town after checking out. It's not 5 star, clearly (you know that already), but it is very hospitable and excellent value.
Nothing - though if you're looking for more luxury, lack of parking and a significantly higher price, you could try a town centre hotel instead.
Friendly gentleman greeted us on arrival.
Only one towel provided in bathroom.Bathroom plumbing not functioning properly. When sink emptied it caused back up in the shower pipe resulting in a foul smell.
Easy parking in backyard, breakfast OK, nice bedroom.
missing wifi in the room.
The location for the city centre was excellant and the hotel was value for money
The smell of stale cigarette smoke
Staff were very welcoming and helpful. Treated us as individuals and went out of their way to meet our requests.
Stairs were a bit of a challenge for guests in their 90's!
Handy for the town centre. Room was clean, warm & comfortable. Breakfast was good albeit for an extra £5. Staff were friendly and attentive.
Location is indeed a little grim. My room, described as 'deluxe' was certainly not. The furniture and furnishings were distinctly second rate. The en suite was very small, had plastic wall coatings in place of tiles and an old shower curtain where the former shower door fitted. It felt more like you would find at a hostel or camping site.
staff were very welcoming. building is kept well compared to neighbouring houoses. close to train station and town centre. beds and linen were clean. shower was good. breakfast was great.
location is a bit grim. rooms could do with a refurb.
I was greeted on arrival, taken to the office to pay and was updated with everything I needed to know. The cutlery, bowls etc in the Breakfast room was exceptionally clean and all staff were very pleasant and helpful. A very pleasant experience.
- Near town centre - Hosts were very gentle (I had to arrive early and they let me get into my room before the scheduled time to check in) - Very clean place
- Nothing to complain about
