The hotel is conveniently located in the city centre. The cathedral, castle and Tullie House museum are only a short walk away. We arrived at 1:50 pm and were told we could not check in until 2:00 pm. Three more guests arrived 2 minutes later and were checked in immediately while we were kept waiting, despite the fact that we were sitting only 10 feet from the receptionist and she could see us. When we checked out we were charged for breakfast although it was included in our rate. They "checked" and confirmed that breakfast was extra. When we got home and checked the email for the booking it confirmed that breakfast was included. I rang the hotel and they "checked" again. They then agreed that breakfast was included and refunded the £23. The breakfast was definitely not worth £11.50 each -dried bacon and scrambled, fried eggs floating in oil or fat.

Friendly, helpful staff. Characterful building with some history and echos of greater elegance. The number on the key fob has no relation to room number. In fact there is no room in the building corresponding to this number. The small metal disc with the room number on is easily missed compared with the large number on the huge plastic fob. Why do this to visitors ?! Very frustrating. Lots of time wasted. The locks on the window were absent, despite the window opening out onto a roof with ready access to other areas of the hotel. Worrying. Dust behind the door indicated flawed vacuming patterns. Otherwise nice and clean. The post code and street address did not correspond on common sat-nav systems. This might be an error in the sat-nav, but surely the hotel must be aware and can clarify directions on the basis of this. Instructions for arrival by car required a different post code or address to that given on the booking form/ confirmation to be entered. Why not make this clear on booking confirmation? It took a long time to find the hotel, and then only after calling and being given a different post code to the one on the address. Again, very frustrating. The additional expense of breakfast made this quite an expensive stay. In addition to this, the invoice then overcharged for breakfast. This was readily corrected once pointed out, but appeared a worryingly routine mistake. Is this a regular scam?

I didnt like anything. Despite booking four months in advance I wasn't booked in. The rooms are shabby - despite them saying they had been refurbished. The bath was dirty, the room was damp as all the T-bags were black with mould. The whole place needs refurbishing and cleaning

Location was paramount as was close to Carlisle Cathedral where daughter's graduation was being held. Liked the old building albeit decoration was tired.

Nothing, wouldn't return I booked as it had a pool, on arrival I was told the pool was closed, I was upgraded to a superior double, which was in no way a superior room, I just dread to think what I was going to be in. Old, run down, bit smelly I would not recomend

This hotel is old fashioned but in a nice elegant way that really suited the building. I liked the pool and hot tub facilities and was impressed with the room. Ensuite toilet door needed replaced it looked old and the lock didn't work. But generally was very happy.

I enjoy the old fashioned luxury of the hotel and the welcoming open fire in the reception, especially at this time of year. when I walk out the front door I am right at the heart of Carlisle.

This hotel is right in the middle of Carlisle so it is ideal if you're wanting to visit the shops or any local historical landmarks and has a 24 hour reception so you can go out and try Carlisle's night life without worrying about being locked out all night. As you walk in you are greeted by a large staircase and a fire (which was nice to see in the middle of winter). The hotel was not cold at all which was good. The layout was a little confusing to find our room but it made the hotel have a bit more character which was nice for a change. For being £70 in the middle of Carlisle on a Saturday night we were satisfied. If you are looking for more of a luxurious stay I would advise you to stay in one of the other hotels. On check-in my card was pre-authorised for £85 but our room was only £70 which has inconvenienced me and on check-out we were not even asked if we were happy with our stay. The hotel needs sprucing up as every part of the hotel that we saw looked dated or shabby. Do not expect a hot or powerful shower. The housekeepers might need to learn how to wash curtains in the rooms and how to hoover properly (obviously had not moved any furniture whilst hoovering nor covered the whole room) and the night porter didn't seem in any rush to come and let us in on a freezing cold night. Overall could be something good if the staff had enthusiasm and the hotel was updated.

The room was okay. We were so disappointed with the hotel, expecting quite a high standard for the price and from the photos. The car park was difficult to find as it was in the middle of the shopping area. We had an evening meal there and the room was awful - no ambience, poor lighting and a shabby serving bar, and the food was poor. The breakfast was held in a much better room and this is where the evening meal should have been served. The cooked breakfast was okay but the rest was of a poor quality, including the awful coffee.

The staff were great, very pleasant and happy to help. The room was advertised as a double deluxe room and it was nothing of the sort, I felt let down at this.

Breakfast was a problem because of confusion re the location of the room and a large visiting group. I expect that the a la carte breakfast would be excellent.

The cenral position of the hotel is wonderful, the foyer and public spaces are relaxed and comfortable, the staff are friendly and helpful The noise from the guests at a wedding who spent the evening until 1.00pm standing in the courtyard indicates that a no smoking on the premises and carpark would have made our stay far more relaxing, trying to sleep with shouting and swearing taking place outside your bedroom is difficult.

Location Not at present. We have stayed at the Crown & Mitre twice before. Each time we have booked a Deluxe double room. 1St time room was spacious and lovely, 2nd time, a bit cramped but still a nice room. This time the room was large with a double and single bed, could be a lovely room but the carpet was full of stains and dirty, the bathroom had mould running round ceiling, the stainless steel at wash-hand basin was rusty, the bath was filthy and bath tap ran all the time. The beds were clean, and as we were only staying one night this time, decided to put up with it. I did report this the next morning and the manager spoke to us before we left. This was certainly not a Deluxe room and at £85 per night for room only, I would have expected much better. The hotel is a beautiful building but is long overdue for some decorating. It is a shame because it is so central but I have been in many hotels that have been more luxurious for less money.
