Dalhousie Castle & SpaCockpen Road, EH19 3JB Bonnyrigg (Show map) Very good, Score from 50 reviews“Excellent castle themed bedroom suite and a wonderful adventure to sleep in a castle.”
Michael,
Buff Point
This fascinating 13th-century castle is in the middle a forest and parkland by the banks of the Esk River and has unique bedrooms with antique furnishings. Some of the rooms are located in a 100-year-old lodge detached from the castle. The hotel's 2 AA Rosette-awarded Dungeon Restaurant is in the vaults, the oldest part of the castle, and serves traditional Scottish cuisine. The Orangery has extensive views of the Esk River and it offers a lighter and more modern menu. The hotel’s spa, Aqueous Spa features many treatments as well as hydro facilities including a massaging jet pool, a sauna and a steam pool. There is an archery and falconry center on the grounds. Edinburgh is only 20 minutes away from Dalhousie Castle & Spa and it takes 10 minutes to Rosslyn, Roslyn or Roslin Chapel which is a possible resting place of the Holy Grail. Hotel Rooms: 36, Hotel Chain: Von Essen.

Dalhousie Castle is an attractive building and a couple of the staff were helpful and pleasant. Our booking was for One "Themed" Room and One Standard Room and despite me saying to the girl on reception that the booking had been corrected by Booking.com we were still sent to the wrong rooms. In fairness to the hotel they did upgrade our friends so that the didn`t have to vacate the room they had been given by mistake but I have to say I don`t know what the "Theme" of our room was unless it was "Mildew in the bathroom"The bar was over priced,if I remember correctly £4.35 for a 330ml Magners,In their Library Bar where the Barman was too busy escorting another couple to the Restaurant and seemed to be looking down his nose at us.We stay in a lot of hotels and the breakfast was far from exceptional so I can`t understand the reviews on here that rave about it.On the second day I had the Salmon with a poached Egg and it was bearly Three mouthfuls, and no I haven`t got a big mouth !We used a Premier Inn on the last day of our trip, just to break the journey, and the breakfast there was far more enjoyable.

1 the cheerful porter 2 the castle itself 1 we asked for a room with a view and got an attic view with no view 2 no lift. There were 5 stairs between the dining room and our room. The absence of a lift was not apparent from your website which is an important point as rooms were let so high in the building. 3 the much advertised gourmet experience was illusory as no seat was available until 8.30 pm and the alternate dining experience offered was disappointing

Fabulously presented hotel, friendly and extremely helpful staff working hard to ensure our stay was the best it possibly could. The grounds are beautiful and the hotel is first class. Having to leave after a brilliantly staged Hogmanay Gala dinner. Definitely go again, nothing not to like at this hotel. Great staff, great food and lovely surroundings.

I had a fabulous time at Dalhousie. I was travelling on my own. The staff made sure I felt comfortable and nothing was too much trouble for them. The staff were marvelous. Highly recommended hotel for customer service. The only down side was that my room did get rather cold towards the evening even when the heating was on. However I called down to reception and they fetched a heater for me. Again nothing was a problem. A visit to the library is highly recommended especially when the log fire is lit. And the staff serve alcohol and hot drinks in the library. The wine was particularly nice!! I am looking forward to staying again.

A beautiful atmospheric hotel. Worth the money due to its uniqueness and the friendly helpful staff. Disappointed with the meal in the Orangery. The salmon was full of bones!

Everything. I can't find anything negative to write about this hotel. the food was amazing, comliments to the kitchen staff. The service was perfect along with the atmosphere in the dungeon restaurant. we were having a glass of wine in the library when Peter the night porter came along and took us on a tour of the castle and told us ghost stories!! We had a wonderful time and hope to return.

We enjoyed the falconry and archery instruction on site. That was tops! En suite shower was wonderful and with towel warmer and generous robes and slippers. Overpriced for its run down condition. Stairs leading to our room seemed ready for replacement. Mattress was past prime. Trails offered on the castle grounds were not according to the maps. Supper meal in Orangery was horrible. Service was marginal at best with all the staff. Internet usage was not including in the hotel price.

Checking out was the best experience, I would never recomend this hotel to any one. It was grossly overpriced! The internet you were charged for was intermitent to non existant, the bed felt like concrete, the towels were old, thin and scratchy, the room was extremely dusty and couldn't I stop sneezing, the restaurant food was bland and overpriced, And overall it was just a 2 star hotel wrapped in a castle.

Location is beautiful and it is a grand old building We were disappointed that our room was not made up - bed not made, no fresh towels, used cups/dishes not picked up. Also supposed to be turn down service - that was not done either. |We stayed 2 nights. Not sure if I would recommend it!

Lots of character in the room and hotel. Definitely has the "castle look" Expensive for what it was and the staff were a bit disorganized at breakfast. Food was ok but we were a little disappointed with the food in the Dungeon restaurant, the restaurant was very spectacular inside.

Location - close enough for Edinburgh for shopping & tourism but in the Countryside so quiet and relaxing and away from the bussle of city life and noise. Food excellent bit pricey but good choice. Staff friendly, welcoming and helpful. Facilities excellent and if you have dogs they are welcome - didn't bring mine though. Creeking stairscase and no lifts - glad was not on top floor. Driveway from main road in need of a serious upgrade - resurfacing required. Bit pricey - two nights just the limit, any longer and would be V.expensive with meals and drinks on top not forgetting the spa treatments....

The Dungeon Dinner was truly a delight. The varied courses and presentation were wonderful. The price was high for the room and dinner. Some soft music (maybe chamber music?/or gregorian chants -- would have been nice) instead of such quiet during the meal. The outside of the Castle looks great, but the inside needs some refurbishment, and if you were blindfolded going in, you would not really know you were inside a castle,, There is some expectation that the rooms would have more of a Castle (stone?) flair. The carpeting had seen better days.
