The Hotel has no car park, motorists have to use the Mailbox Centre car park, and although The Hotel offers discounted parking the charges are outrageous - cost from 8.00p.m. Friday to 9.45a.m Sunday was £34.00. If travelling by train, the Hotel is just a short walk from New Street Station, but the Ramada Hotel does not have a name board at the entrance to the Mailbox Car Park or at the central lift, giving directions on how to get to it!! Had to enquire at the Cafe beside the Car Park entrance!! The Hotel has a restaurant, with no atmosphere, we ate dinner the first night but the food was not very appetising, we did not 'do' Breakfast because the cost was £13 per head!
The proximity of the Hotel to the Gas Street Canal Basin, Brindley Place & Mailbox Centre. From morning till late evening these locations are 'buzzing'. There were many excellent places to eat, paticularly Carter & Miller Steakhouse at the Mailbox (ask for a table in the section waitered by Andy), The Tap & Spile pub on the canal bank. Further along the canal bank under the bridge, a canal boat cafe serves excellent breakfasts at sensible prices. There are lots more eateries at Brindley Place and Mailbox. Forwarned by comments on Booking.com's own ratings site, we were concerned about staying at Ramada Hotel, therefore after being greeted Reception we made the staff aware we had read many bad reports by previous clients and asked for 2 clean and comfy rooms, with canal view, and that is exactly what we got (rooms 425 & 427). The rooms were on the fourth floor directly above all the bars and restaurants of The Mailbox centre, however the rooms were equiped with large electric fans which proved a bonus in the early hours, when ready to retire we were able to shut out all the social noise, and enjoy a good night's rest. Tea & Coffee making facilities were excellent, and the tray kept well full of beverage items. Our compliments to all the members of Reception staff they were efficient, friendly and very helpful with any information we needed, and we thank them very much for their kind attention. We would use the Hotel again, if visiting Birmingham again.
