Really liked the location of the hostel, close to the lakeside, great views over to Catbells. Went down to the shore early in the morning and enjoyed the peace and quiet down there.

Loo didn't seem especially clean - though we did arrive quite late in the evening & there was only one loo between several family rooms, which seems not enough

Nice to sit outside and take in the lovely view, good free wi-fi in lounge, friendly staff, more family oriented than other hostels, good shower, Keswick cruise boat landing at foot of driveway (Ashness Gate).

Rather musty smell (of food trodden into damp carpet?) pervading common areas, beds very basic (but comfortable enough). Don't try the standard cotton wash in the LG washing machine - it takes 3 hours, also machine won't start if laundry weighs more than 7kg (e.g. 4 wet swimming towels)!

The staff at the hostel were welcoming and most helpful! The facilities were were well kept and clean

Although the facilities were well kept and clean I felt I could smell damp in some areas of the building

-thought the cost of evening meal at the Hostel was a bit high

Location was amazing. Right on the lake

Unfortunately we were given the worst room in the annexe not in the main building as shown on the net. It was damp and smelling of old stone. Could not sleep for 3 nights. Really uncomfortable. Avoid room 12 at all costs!

It had been a while since we had stayed in a hostel. So was a little difficult for us and as we have a young child with special needs it was perhaps harder than normal. But the staff were tops. Things worked and was a nice vibe.

Slightly musty room but just needed airing.

The Home cooked Foods and. Staff were excellent couldn't ask any better. From Outside Hostel looked Grand and Clean and have fab View.....

The Cleanliness in our bedroom and private toilet were poor. There were cob webs on the ceiling and death flies and Dusted Corners and all the windows were Dirty. Indoor Hotels looked Tired and in need of painting

Knew location as stayed many times in Keswick before. Half way for my onward journey to Wales from Scotland! Value for money.

Shame it had to go independent from the YHA. Toilets need better signage. Other people didn't lock the door on leaving.

I like the peaceful three-days spent in this great hostel! It is very enjoyable to walk around the Dewentwater lake and I love a restaurant nearby as well (Marry Mount). Besides, students coming for school trip makes much fun for my tour.

House has a beautiful location overlooking the lake. The rooms are comfortable, and the mansion is a fun place to stay.

For a traveler without a car, it is a bit difficult to get here. You have to take a bus or walk the 2 miles from Keswick. Its a pretty walk but it takes awhile. The wifi connection is terrible. Do not anticipate having a good internet connection.

I loved it here. I booked last minute, simply because it had an available bed so i had no expectations... and now I'm already planning my next visit to Derwentwater Independant. location was great and easily accessible on public transport, or £5 taxi from Keswick. gorgeous setting with lots of nearby walks (plus a waterfall outside my dorm window!). the staff were great and created a friendly and warm atmosphere meaning myself and other guests felt immediately at home - which led to lots of socialising in the communal areas. self catering facilities were good - I didn't order the hostel food, maybe next time. beds comfy, showers warm and clean... and great value for money. Thanks! Erin, Manchester.

I would have liked somewhere to properly unpack my things - the wardrobe unit in my dorm was too small for 6 ladies to use, but there was lots of floor space! other than that, I can't fault anything :)

The location is superb. Wildlife fantastic - we had breakfast with red squirrels (on the other side of the window). Staff were fantastic and helpful. Great kitchen & lounge. We're already planning our next visit!

If it had been busier, another toilet or two might be useful.

It met our needs perfectly. Our two young children could be children and could play and run (and cry at the dinner table!!) And no one looked twice! Perfect location for hubby and the canoe too. We will be back!

Nothing to complain about but would've been nice to buy our own wine for our evening meal. I can understand why there's a hostel drinks only policy though. Can't fault the place, it was spot on!

Beautiful house and location, lake at the front, waterfall at the back (view from dining room). Friendly reception, generous meals - huge breakfast. Several rooms for reading / games - kids like to explore. Taxi from Keswick only £5.

The location....the welcome, the warmth of the dormitory! The facilities for self-catering are good.

The size of the mattress - too narrow. For some reason I was scratching a lot when I was in bed!! Washpowder?

Lovely welcoming staff and a relaxed atmosphere set in a wonderful location for visiting Keswick and the North lakes. The food was very good and I recommend the local ales sold at the hoste as well.
