Lovely views from our dorm window, friendly staff
Breakfast was great except the bacon was a bit hard although it was early...
Helpful staff Great food - breakfast is a bargain Location is perfect Better than the old YHA - a lick of paint and just a bit more friendly
The location is great, and the facilities were all very good. Staff were helpful and friendly. Got plenty of sleep even in a 22bed dorm!
If you're on your own, this place isn't the best for meeting other travellers as there are mostly only families holidaying there. Also if you don't have a car, you either need to walk a long way or catch a bus from Keswick which is a little expensive.
The house was very clean well organised and fully equipped for self catering no expense was spare. The grounds were wonderful we had our own waterfall at the rear of the building. Wonderful wild life.Perfect location for walking, hiking and day trips.bus from Keswick stop at the gate will definitely visit again.
Like it All
very helpful staff
cold and damp room for the family , had various bugs in the room!!
Really liked the location of the hostel, close to the lakeside, great views over to Catbells. Went down to the shore early in the morning and enjoyed the peace and quiet down there.
Loo didn't seem especially clean - though we did arrive quite late in the evening & there was only one loo between several family rooms, which seems not enough
Nice to sit outside and take in the lovely view, good free wi-fi in lounge, friendly staff, more family oriented than other hostels, good shower, Keswick cruise boat landing at foot of driveway (Ashness Gate).
Rather musty smell (of food trodden into damp carpet?) pervading common areas, beds very basic (but comfortable enough). Don't try the standard cotton wash in the LG washing machine - it takes 3 hours, also machine won't start if laundry weighs more than 7kg (e.g. 4 wet swimming towels)!
Staff v friendly. V relaxed atmosphere. All other guests were chatty and facilities were fantastic! The location is ... breathtaking! Catching the launch into Keswick is a must. Will never forget our evening paddles in lake then chatting over a Peroni playing ping pong. Will be back!
The staff at the hostel were welcoming and most helpful! The facilities were were well kept and clean
Although the facilities were well kept and clean I felt I could smell damp in some areas of the building
-location -local wildlife esp birds -close proximity of Derwentwater -handy for Keswick -friendly,knowledgable staff
-thought the cost of evening meal at the Hostel was a bit high
Location was amazing. Right on the lake
Unfortunately we were given the worst room in the annexe not in the main building as shown on the net. It was damp and smelling of old stone. Could not sleep for 3 nights. Really uncomfortable. Avoid room 12 at all costs!
It had been a while since we had stayed in a hostel. So was a little difficult for us and as we have a young child with special needs it was perhaps harder than normal. But the staff were tops. Things worked and was a nice vibe.
Slightly musty room but just needed airing.
Location Views Grounds Staff Comfort
Wasn't there long enough! I'd like to spend a week or two here.
Stunning location, good food and very helpful, friendly staff.
The Home cooked Foods and. Staff were excellent couldn't ask any better. From Outside Hostel looked Grand and Clean and have fab View.....
The Cleanliness in our bedroom and private toilet were poor. There were cob webs on the ceiling and death flies and Dusted Corners and all the windows were Dirty. Indoor Hotels looked Tired and in need of painting
Knew location as stayed many times in Keswick before. Half way for my onward journey to Wales from Scotland! Value for money.
Shame it had to go independent from the YHA. Toilets need better signage. Other people didn't lock the door on leaving.
the birds corner
Hotel was excellent, location excellent. Staff were so friendly and helpful. Overall excellent place to stay
Location; warm, helpful welcome; magnificent views; flexibility; friendly staff
plastic mattresses but we understood we had family room.
I like the peaceful three-days spent in this great hostel! It is very enjoyable to walk around the Dewentwater lake and I love a restaurant nearby as well (Marry Mount). Besides, students coming for school trip makes much fun for my tour.
Friendly, informative staff
All of the staff were very friendly and extremely helpful. The rooms were all clean and facilities were well looked after. A great place to stay.
Friendly staff. Great location
House has a beautiful location overlooking the lake. The rooms are comfortable, and the mansion is a fun place to stay.
For a traveler without a car, it is a bit difficult to get here. You have to take a bus or walk the 2 miles from Keswick. Its a pretty walk but it takes awhile. The wifi connection is terrible. Do not anticipate having a good internet connection.
I loved it here. I booked last minute, simply because it had an available bed so i had no expectations... and now I'm already planning my next visit to Derwentwater Independant. location was great and easily accessible on public transport, or £5 taxi from Keswick. gorgeous setting with lots of nearby walks (plus a waterfall outside my dorm window!). the staff were great and created a friendly and warm atmosphere meaning myself and other guests felt immediately at home - which led to lots of socialising in the communal areas. self catering facilities were good - I didn't order the hostel food, maybe next time. beds comfy, showers warm and clean... and great value for money. Thanks! Erin, Manchester.
I would have liked somewhere to properly unpack my things - the wardrobe unit in my dorm was too small for 6 ladies to use, but there was lots of floor space! other than that, I can't fault anything :)
