With a peaceful, rural location, just 20 minutes from the historic university city of Oxford and just 10 minutes from Abingdon, the hotel is rich in original character and traditional charm. Situated in the heart of the Oxfordshire countryside, the Dog House Hotel has a traditional bar, with an original wood-beamed ceiling, a roaring fire and a patio. Food is available in the bar and in the restaurant and conservatory. The name of the hotel has an unusual origin. In days gone by, wealthy farming gentry sent their offspring to be educated in Oxford and would arrive there complete with their horses and hunting dogs. The colleges allowed their students to stable horses, but not the dogs. With nowhere else to house the animals, the proprietor of the local inn offered an invaluable dog-sitting service and the venue became known as the Dog House. Today, there are 20 comfortable rooms, including 2 feature rooms. Each room has a a private bathroom, a TV and tea/coffee making facilities. Hotel Rooms: 20, Hotel Chain: Old English Inns. Most recent booking for this hotel was yesterday at 15:38 from United Kingdom.

Nice Room Tea & Coffee facilities. Very good well priced meals available. Some of the younger waitresses seemed a little unfocused. Eg ordered Tea at Breakfast got coffee asked for White bread and got brown bread. The breakfasts were actually very good, nice selection.

Staff were friendly and the room was lovely. The grounds were good and the venue was genuinely old (in parts!). There was good parking and the food was value for money. The lights were turned on to bright in the restaurant at 9.20 (meals were served until 10.00) so that we felt obliged to end our meal quickly. The floor was being cleaned with strong smelling discinfectant around the breakfast tables at 9.15. The music was for teenagers or young people and was inappropriate for an 'old English Inn' and the customers who were almost universally over 50.

Friendly old inn with a good choice of food both for breakfast and evening meals. Very handy location for Oxford area. Staff friendly and efficient and room facilities good. An enjoyable stay. Room at the front of hotel was subject to traffic noise as window not double glazed-our own in quiet location so maybe more noticeable to us

The Dog House is a terrific english country hotel. The service is friendly and efficient, the room was spotless and comfortable and the food was delicious. Our room was in the attic and was very spacious and well-appointed, but lugging our suitcases up the narrow, twisting staircase was a bit of an effort. However, this is a small quibble about what was otherwise a wonderful stay.

It was a lovely hotel, yes perhaps in need of a face lift, but I wasn't there for the decor. The staff were fantastic and couldn't be more helpful. I would certainly recommend it.

Made to feel welcome. Food ,drink & atmosphere good. Rates reasonable. We booked solely for ease of access to the Golf course 2 mins away so it was just what we were looking for. No complaints although the twin room we had needed a little updating.

The close proximity to the Golf Course where a group of 8 of us played over a 3 day period, all staying in the Dog House. Just 5mns and we were on the 1st tee. Now that's first class.

Very nice hotel with very friendly and helpful staff. Very relaxed atmosphere. Food was nice. Room was lovely. Location was good for our needs. Room needs some TLC - the windows albeit quaint did not fit the frames so the room felt chilly, and there was plaster peeling from the ceiling right above the bed.

Easy parking, good value for money, good location and pleasant atmosphere. Wide choice of menu but needs refining. Nice comfy bed, clean good towels and clean rooms Could be a really nice place but needs urgent tlc to improve. The wall & ceiling paper in room 9 needs resticking or taking off, and the room redecorated- the dark paint makes the room too dark so needs a much lighter colour. Sink needs properly fixing, more hooks on the shower curtain, and a heated towel rail or radiator to warm and dry the towels. And the windows cleaned outside! The new curtians needs a stich or 2. How about a box of tissues. The corridoors could also do with a lick of paint. Some guest in a large party complained of poor service at dinner - had too long to wait - restrict menu choices for large party might help. Same menu for the 3 nights we were there including the specials- curtains in the dining room- white ones on folding doors need cleaning - dirtyI would not recommend this but if the tlc was done yes!

Relaxing place and convenient Terrible bathroom. Very noisy extractor, blocked sink and shower that didn't work properly - only scalding hot water that dribbled out. Spoilt an otherwise nice stay.

Location of hotel, on a quiet country road. 7 mile's from Oxford, for shoping and sightseeing. Thier are several other place's of interest to visit within short distance's of the hotel. Friendly and helpful staff. Comfortable bed's and clean room's. On all 3 night's of my vacation with my partner, we had our dinner at the hotel. All meal's were excellent value, and very enjoyable. In the evening, comfortable surrounding's for drink and relax. Recommend, to book a table for eating in the evening.
