Donnington Grove and Country ClubGrove Road, Newbury, RG14 2LA (Show map)
On the outskirts of Newbury, overlooked by the historic Donnington Castle, this beautifully renovated 18th-century Gothic house is set in 550 acres of grounds with its own championship golf course. Donnington Grove and Country Club has a beautiful, secluded position, with easy access to highways M4 and the A34. London Heathrow Airport is less than 50 minutes away. There are 18 rooms with private bathrooms, all of which have satellite TV and tea/coffee makers. The new clubhouse has a bar opening out onto an outdoor area for open-air dining. There is also a new restaurant serving carvery meals and delicious European cuisine. The restaurant leads to a southwest-facing terrace with views out over the practice area, lakes and the Lambourn River. The location is fantastic. Great area for walks and hikes. Historic building with gorgeous grounds. Easy drive to Stonehenge. Free parking and good food in the restaurant. We would definitely stay here again if in the area and will recommend Donnington to friends and family.

We loved the surroundings been on a golf course. The castle hotel is very comfortable and romantic. We loved it and most definitely will return. We thought the restaurant could have been a better standard to match the hotel.

Superb location and big rooms. No guest directory, no mini-bar and not the place to dine quietly unless you have just played golf with your buddies.

Very nice old English manor house in a great setting. Staff were friendly and helpful. The best breakfast of the four places we stayed on this trip and we enjoyed the dinner. Plumbing in our room was very noisey when the water was running.

Staff extremely helpful and let us get into the room early in order to change for a wedding. The golf course looked great - we will hopefully return one day to make more use of the facilities. The room was a little tired but it had everything we wanted. The bed was especially comfortable.

The location was great - just next to Donnington Castle and lovely walks nearby, which the staff were happy to advise on. Spotted lots of wildlife, including deer and a barn owl. I booked the suite, but apparently they were double booked. Instead of admitting this straight away they tried to fob me off with a self catering flat on the other side of the grounds. Comfortable enough and I imagine great if you're on a longer break, but I booked a posh room in a country house hotel, not a holiday flat with Ikea furniture - I've enough of that at home. After complaining the hotel substantially reduced the bill and gave us a bottle of wine. It was disappointing they hadn't done this straight away instead of hoping we wouldn't complain.

Location Comfort of bedrooms and public areas (eg restaurant, pub, ...) The hotel could do with a refurbishment as rooms are not up date date with nowadays standards

There is not one single thing I did not love about the Donnington Grove and Country Club. Staff went out of their way to be helpful and kind. Room was beautiful and immpecibly clean. Beds were comfy. The Building was gobsmackingly gorgeous, the grounds were outstanding. Meal we had was lovely. We will be back to stay for more days next time, as one night was simply not enough.

Nice large room on the 3rd floor, nice views of golf course and wildlife. Friendly and accomadating staff. Nice rustic castle esq hotel. Breakfast was also good quality. Great for golfers and business parties. Lots of potential to be great, needs hotel to have its own bar/restaurant and a spa/pool/gym would be great. This would make the hotel the perfect weekend retreat for couples and hen parties, also a lift for older guests if possible.

Quiet and comfortable room, but I think hotel not very full. Bathroom ok, sink plug didn't work not a problem. Bar snacks very good and inexpensive. Breakfast really good. Very convenient for Watermill theatre. Assuming not too busy and no golfers teeing off early then I would recommend the hotel to non-golfers.

The site of the hotel in centre of golf was very nice also if you wanted to walk. I feel what let it down was, you approach the hotel and you have that wow factor, this continues into the reception, and up to our room that was lovely great views. The greatest let down was the bar and dinning area,it was like walking from 18th century into the 21st century, typical golf club bar, the dinning room was like a motorway service station pot plants that were fakes, it just did not go with the rest of the hotel which was such a let down. There was no where comfotable to go and seat after your meal, there was no offer of morning papers. As i say it was fantastic till you walked into the bar and dining area, if it was not the fact of having to pay taxi we would have eaten some where else.

Our room was beautiful - huge bed and lovely shower. Staff were very friendly and helpful. The views out over the countryside were spectacular. I had booked because we were going to see a concert nearby, but once we got there we wished we didn't have to leave the room!
