Check in was fast, staff were friendly. The communal areas were spacious so it didn't feel like you were sat on top of other guests.
We were clearly in a room that has yet to be updated, it was very tried looking and could do with a lick of paint. Some of the communal areas to looked as if they could do with some new furniture, I'm sure this will get done in time.
Got to the hotel and I had booked two rooms. one for me and one for my colleague. they couldn't find the second room. whilst searching Chloe had to nip to the toilet. she came back and was made to wait behind another queue of people. Then when she was given her room key - she was given the wrong one. Her room I might add was on the top floor farthest corner of the hotel. The rooms were absolutely nothing like what you have displayed on line. I would have paid extra if I had known I would end up in a room where the shower is so low you cant use it. Décor very old etc. Very poor experience overall. I informed reception and they just handed me a managers email and said sorry. No interest in getting back to me personally. Not interested in following up or getting someone to contact me. lack of customer service to say the least!!!
Brillant staff. So polite. Nothing to much trouble. Room gorgeous. Bed super comfy. Breakfast was hot and tasty. This is a hotel who knows how to treat its guests. Well done and thank you for making our stay so lovely
Room was wonderful - the new decoration is really tasteful and the room and bed very comfortable Breakfast was amazing! Lovely sitting in the lounge in the morning - we love DownHall
we had a barking dog in the room up from us (between 10 and 12) - not sure if this was a guide dog or part of the wedding party
Staff were very friendly and helpful, food was excellent, bed very comfortable. Good size room.
room was very hot during the night.
Hotel was beautiful in a lovely location with great views. Room was high quality
Tea and coffee making facilities were not in our room unlike stated on the room description
Love the rooms leading to a garden The walks even in the rain.
Dog Barking next door, and making so much noise through the night and right up to our early checkout. UNBELIEVABLE. The hotel has a responsibility to either sort the issue or move the guests. NOT doing that again.
The bed was extremely comfortable, linen was also lovely. The wedding breakfast was very nice as was the self service breakfast the following morning with plenty of choices. The grounds looked beautiful but unfortunately we did not have time to explore them or the other hotel facilities.
The lengthy queue to check out with only 2 x reception stations.
The spacious rooms & hotel lobby rooms
Breakfast variety can be improved for such a prestigious hotel
Excellent room and very large, comfy bed. Good breakfast.
Info sheet with instructions to Stansted airport could have been more explicit.
Facilities and grounds were good.
Not as advertised. Did not live up to the posh standard they demonstrate in the pictures. The room was dark, old furniture, bath had tiles missing and bath had paint chipped off.
Good feel in public rooms
Room was shocking. I had asked for refurbished room as I stay regularly but did not and allocated a poor one which I think is a bad show..
Saying I will come back is testament. Positives Incredible value for the price I booked at Room was amazing. Just lovely and with dressing gowns etc. I understand some rooms haven't been updated yet The walk and drive up to the hotel is stunning Breakfast is fantastic. The best scrambled egg for some time. Didn't use the sauna but will next time.
Negatives Wifi constantly dropped out rather than leaving you logged on. I still liked having it though. Bar food was very expensive considering that you weren't in the restaurant. Nice mushroom ravioli but no offer of Parmesan and £16. No restaurant menu in the room Wine is on the pricey side
Lovely location, excellent staff who can't do enough to make your stay perfect! Thank you
Firm, very comfortable beds Polite, attentive, friendly, well-trained staff. Luxurious public areas. On my second visit I paid for an upgrade to a huge & well-equipped executive room. Furnished and maintained to a very high standard. Excellent value weekday bed & breakfast package. Excellent breakfast menu. Beautiful rural surroundings.
Expensive & quite limited evening menu. Quite a distance from local towns and amenities along unlit country road. On my first visit my older, standard-price room (212) smelled a bit musty and did not appear to have been refurbished. Hotel information leaflets were in a pile on top of the wardrobe. Everything worked fine, but that one room was a bit shabby. (But the bed was nonetheless incredibly comfortable!)
The room and en suite was a really good size. The bed was huge and very comfortable. Everything was spotlessly clean. There were lots of mirrors, plugsockets and lights. The staff were all very pleasant and accomodating.
Can honestly say there wasn't anything we didn't like. Although as expected with a 4* hotel the food and drink was quite expensive (£11.00 for a pint of lager and large wine) but it was very tasty food so was our little treat to ourselves on our first night.
Location, Wifi, Facilities and Staff
Location of the Room and that there was no Bath, only a shower
The Hotel has an English charm and we enjoyed our visit immensely Hope to return in the not too distant future
Could not find any faults on our visit
Excellent dinner Courteous and helpful staff
Room that looked out on the kitchen bins and car park with dirty voile curtains! Noisy wedding guests at night. Shabby furniture, poor lighting, antiquated shower and hairdryer. Would not recommend hotel to friends
Peaceful location; beAutiful room.
filling of nice old england good restorant lowly garden
reception all time was very beasy
The historical building The environment, the atmosphere The spaces The hygiene
The building is beautiful, the grounds are stunning.

Staff, breakfast, impressive location building and surroundings.
Room condition was tired and old, curtains threadbare & bathroom news upgrade.
