Elan Hotel

Accommodation in the centre of Rhayader Please note that the question below asks if I would recommend Rhayader to others - yes. The real question is would I recommend the Elan Hotel - NO!

Very very noisey! What an establishment like this cannot do is expect to continue serving late into the evening and attract hotel guests that require a nights sleep. Customers stood outside the front of the 'pub' until the early hours smoking (smoke into bedroom!) and talking (loudly). Much to loud for front bedroom guests. I am additionally concerned about the Fire Escapes, particularly from the front rooms of the hotel, bolted doors (even if the bolt can be opened from the inside) are not acceptable on escape routes!

Booked this hotel on line for 2 reasons: pet friendly and off street car parking. I arrived on a busy Friday afternoon and the entrance to the parking facility was so narrow that I badly damaged my vehicle. In fact I never got into the yard used for parking. When i asked at reception I was told that it was OK to park at the front outside the door. It was fully parked up. It was suggested to me to use a car park until there was parking at the door. This was not suitable as I could not leave a big dog in the car in a carpark on a warm day. Anyway, I parked away at some distance and hauled my luggage to the Elan and checked in and got a distinct smell of stale ale. My dog was in a carpark somewhere in the town at this stage. I checked in anyway! I went out and secured much better accommodation cheaper, and 'checked out' of the Elan all within half and hour. Most unsatisfactory. My visit resulted in me paying twice for overnight accommodation plus substantial damage to my vehicle.

Attitude of staff to bedding problem - they didn't read the special requirements on Booking.com for non-allergenic bedding - my problem apparently! A blanket will have to do!

Poor staff training - booking, key card, credit card payment. Poor maintenance - cheap and ineffective repairs, bulb not working etc Inconsistent portions at breakfast, beer tasted off. Access - very narrow, awkward entrance to car park, beer barrels at bottom of stairs.

the place is in need of re-decoration. it all looks very tired, apart from the front. room was ok but shower had cracked tiles with black dirt ingress. duvet cover had stains on it, which showed even more, as it was white. this place really hasnt got much going for it! the guy that took the visa payment didnt have the courtesy to ask how the room was or even say thanks, as he was on telephone to somebody during the transaction. very overpriced & 67.50 £45 - £ 50 would be more reasonable, but i wouldnt go there again

Unfortunately, on arrival, there was a funeeral reception and the hotel was overflowing.

Parking Difficult entrance.Car park and muddy underfoot Bed Duvet badly stained,stairway needs painting and cleaning. A lot of noise until 1 o`clock in the morning with youths outside the hotel using foul language Bedroom cramped for space The publicity photo of the hotel was deceptive

the areas outside of the rooms were dirty and in need of painting. walls were marked and the carpet was old and in need of cleaning or renewing.

The food was exceptional. The breakfast will set up for the day-you must have a big appetite to finish it. The steak and kidney pie is not to missed as an evening meal. The prices in the bar were very reasonable and there was a relaxed atmosphere. Lovely modern room which was clean. The fresh fruit in the room is a nice touch. The hotels location is perfect to see the sights of the Elan Valley and we liked its position in the town of Rhayader. We will definitely stay there again.

The access to the car park is very restricted. In my opinion if you have a bigger car I would get someone to guide you in, as I scratched the side of my car when driving in (the wife was checking in at the time). That is the only fault I can find with the hotel.

Home cooked food, good location for the Elan Valley and friendly staff. Really enjoyed our stay.

Room was clean and tidy. Heaps of space for carparking. Staff okay but not spectacular, not overly welcoming.

The room was very comfortable, clean and modern. The food in the restaurant was good and it was very well set-up for watching sport with a large screen in the main bar were you could also eat if you if you chose. A choice of two good quality ales.

Not very well set up for storing bicycles as we had to put our two in a shed round the back without a padlock.

Bar and Restaurant
