“It's a beautiful hotel, full of character - a great place for business, leisure or family occasions. We have been staying at the Orwell for the last 10 years and although the ownership has changed over this time the hotel still retains its charm and friendliness and is a great place to relax.”
Terence,
Burwell
Close to the town centre and just metres from Felixstowe Railway Station, this impressive Victorian hotel is rich in original charm and traditional character, with free parking for guests. Originally dating back to 1898, the Orwell Hotel is a traditional, old-fashioned hotel, which underwent a major refurbishment during the autumn of 2003. The property was initially built for Lord Tollemarch. Today, the spacious public areas are wood-panelled and traditionally decorated with a wealth of charm and elegance. There are 58 en suite rooms, all of which are tastefully furnished. A full English Breakfast is included in the price. Westerfield’s Restaurant has an elegant atmosphere and offers both a table d’hôte and an à la carte menu. Felixstowe is an Edwardian resort and, like the hotel itself, it still retains much of its original charm. The town features beautiful south-facing gardens, many attractions, safe beaches and a paved promenade. The hotel is just a mile (1.6 km) from the town’s port. Well positioned for shopping and acess to railway and bus facilities. The lounges and His Lordships Library were maintained as original and very comfortable and relaxing. Outside, the gardens were well kept and the car park large and adequate We felt that the room did not match the quality of the rest of the hotel the beds were very hard and uncomfortable and the bathroom although not in anyway dirty was a bit tired looking and the shower and taps were difficult to operate easily.

Made welcome from the moment we entered the hotel, the car park was near the entrance and the room was warm and cosy. Dining is exquisite. The Location is ideal for the Beach and it is a short 5 minutes walk to the shops. The shower was poor due to low water pressure.

I have always considered the Orwell Hotel to be the best hotel in Felixstowe and my opinion has not changed. It is very comfortable and the staff are helpful and polite. We came back to the hotel from the theatre at 22:50 on friday night and wanted a nightcap. We waited in the bar area for a few minutes but no-one was around to serve.

I notice above you offer "Gourmet", as a standard. I would say that is probably over the top in describing the food at the Orwell Hotel, - though the food they offered was to a high standard and was greatly enjoyed by my wife and myself. The Station was on the opposite side of the road, yet we never heard any trains, and likewise bus stops were only a few paces walk away. The main shopping area was genuinely less than a 10 minute stroll away. All in all a place we would be happy to return to again. Nothing we honestly didn't like. We did though make a suggestion to reception that they might like to have a copy of the days weather forcast available on reception, which can be easily downloaded from the Internet.

It's name! The signboarding actually calls itself 'Hotel Elizabeth'. I initially drove past it and it took me 15 minutes of searching before eventually parking up to ask if it really was the Orwell Hotel. Most frustrating!

The staff are so friendly and the hotel is really comfortable. I would travel 500 miles for an Orwell traditional English breakfast. They are delicious. Altho the hotel is so friendly and has a fantastic decor with a number of lounges, reading rooms and a great bar and surroundings the shower in my room was useless. No matter which way the tap was turned the water temperature remained constant, ie, scalding hot! I would mark this as one of the hotel's 'quaint' features. But I would go back tomorrow. Thank you Elizabeth Orwell.

Breakfast very good plus breakfast staff very nice and friendly. Attitude of girl on reception on arrival. Door key card very poor in operation - girl on reception made you feel it was your fault, turned out system is poor anyway. 15-25 swipes each time to unlock room!!

Charming hotel. Lovely gardens and attractive public areas. Most of all I enjoyed breakfast in such elegant restaurant. As I'm working at a hotel in housekeeping I paid attention to clealiness. The room needed better cleaning. I found dirty mirrors and dusty drawers.

It's right in the middle of town. The rooms need to be refurbished and the pillows in paricular as so old they are very uncomfortable to lie on. The bathroom facilities weren't much better with a shower that dripped rather than flowed. We won't be going back.

We had a suite, the Bawsey, it smelt as did the lift and most of the rest of the hotel, of 'shake and vac'. It was very over powering, the window needed to be open. The bed mattress did not fit the base, the bed was much smaller than the headboard .there is a strange bamboo divider in the middle of the room. Bath Badly stained. Thermostat not broken, hence boiling water. The central heating was off, due to predicted 20degrees, it as 2 outside. I am not I pressed when told some rooms are being done up, this room should not have been let. Breakfast predictable and cheap quality. A very sad hotel that is well passed its time. Not a monument to past excellence. Photos available.

Made welcome from the moment we entered the hotel, the car park was near the entrance and the room was warm and cosy. Dining is exquisite. The Location is ideal for the Beach and it is a short 5 minutes walk to the shops. This was our second visit, so the plus points outweigh the minus points. Both times they tried to overcharge us for a one night stay, first time it was a Bar bill we didn't create, this time it was a £221.29 for telephone calls, we had not made any. My advice is check you bill thoroughly.
