Less than a mile from York’s historic center, this friendly hotel, built in 1870, retains stained glass windows and a splendid oak staircase. There are affordable rooms and a restaurant and bar. The Elmbank Hotel and Lodge’s rooms each have a TV, telephone, tea/coffee-making facilities and a work area. A private bathroom in every bedroom has complimentary toiletries. The elegant restaurant and separate bar reflect the hotel’s Victorian character. There is an extensive wine list and tea and coffee can be taken in the comfortable lounge. York’s ancient city walls can be reached in just a 10-minute walk, with a further 5 to 10 minutes taking guests to the historic attractions, including the spectacular York Minster. York Train station is just a 10-minute walk or few minutes by car, and the Elmbank has free parking. There is also a bus stop near the hotel, with sightseeing tours going in to town. Hotel Rooms: 72, Hotel Chain: Cairn Hotels. Most recent booking for this hotel was today at 08:04 from United Kingdom.

The hotel was not too far outside of city centre, in walking distance, which was why it was selected. The hotel itself needs a deep clean, we thought it needed more thorough cleaning, much evidence of dust around edges. We were unable to open the window, probably to do with the vegetation on the outside. The modern bathroom was beginning to show signs of not being cleaned correctly which is sad, since such investments are not cheap. We would not stay at this hotel again and certainly would not recommend it to anybody.

It was very convenient for our stay as we were attending a Reunion at the Mount School and Bootham .We were fortunate to be able to use the School Car Park. It is also useful to be within walking distance of the City. The bedroom was a suitable size for our needs and the bathroom was very good. We found the entrance gloomy and the bedroom was chilly and we could not find the way to adjust the radiator in it.

Checked in by a young lady, quite friendly. Lovely hotel with lots of character, only we were allocated a room in the lodge at the oppisite side of road which we did not know about until arrival. Room quite adequate, an a comftable bed. Short 10 minute walk into York, would stay again if price remained same. Bit of a musty smell if staying in lodge on entering, rooms little dusty in places. Good bathroom though with excellent shower.Would definately find out where room allocated is next time!

we were in one of the rooms outside in converted outbuildings so we could come and go as we liked the main building was very nice to come back to late on and having a drink next to the open fire the nearest shops and pubs are 5 mins walk and the city wall another 5 further on overall a very nice weekend and would certainly stay again

The Arts & Crafts style of the interior and the fact that so many features have been maintained. Maybe we picked a bad time, or perhaps the restaurant is seldom used. Only four people dining and the menu was very uninspiring. We did enjoy the excellent "Manuel" type service though.

Only the location. We suspect it is for this reason and this reason alone that the hotel is as popular as it is (fully booked on the night we stayed). There was little else to commend it -- see below. The room was very scruffy, "tired" and unclean. Carpets very dirty and not vacuumed ; curtains - 2/3 hooks missing. Bathroom very small with wash hand basin so small almost impossible to use. General decor and carpets in entrance, corridors etc very drab and almost at point of being shabby. Breakfast represented extremely poor value for money, hard yoked poached eggs et al. It may seem to you that we are "one of those moaning couples for whom nothing is good enough". This is definitely not the case and I think for these surveys to mean anything the truth needs to come out. We would NEVER stay at this hotel again and would NEVER recommend it to friends. Although visiting from the south, I am a native of Yorkshire and love the city of York.

Decor of lobby and main hall were good with modern take of old traditional themes. Whilst room was basic but adequate, the shower was poor. Wt=ater pressure was too low which meant that there was only a slow water flow to was in. Additionally the walls of the rooms were so thin everything could be heard next door distinctly...even conversations.

I knew what to expect from the other reviews here, so the hotel was fine for the purposes we needed. It isn't too far from the old town (about 15 min walk) is reasonably comfortable and prices are good. On the first day of our stay there was no hot water and we were given no warning. Staff were apologetic (sort of) but we had to have cold showers all the same. I think some kind of offer of compensation or just a free drink in the bar might have been a nice gesture, but the service in this hotel is a bit on the basic side. The whole place is a bit dusty, tatty and tired. Creaky floorboards and banging doors tend to keep you awake at night. It's as if the owners gave up on the place decades ago and are now just going through the motions. Oh, and the breakfast (£8.50 extra) was dull, cold and overpriced.

Elmbank Hotel and Lodge is very close to York City Centre, which makes it convenient for walking in. Staff were very friendly and the rooms were nice and clean. Elmbank Hotel and Lodge is has a certain vintage style, which is lovely in the communal areas but the bedrooms and bathrooms could benefit from a update of the decor, furniture and fixtures in the bathrooms. This would give it a nicer feel.

The Elmbank was ideal for what we wanted to do - a city trip and night out in York. We stayed in the lodge which was lovely, comfortable, clean and had everything we needed. We will definately stay at the Elmbank again.

Excellent location less than 10 mins from the station, and close to the city centre. Also clean and tidy, and the entrance and the staircase have great atmosphere. This particular room we stayed has a bad show with low pressure. No internet available to staying customers unless you bring your own device (wifi seems available). The staff friendly but could not help me when I wanted to look for time for buses. I had to borrow Yellow Pages and look up phone no of Tourist Info, and ring.

The employees at the Reception Desk were very helpful when we checked in and generally continued to be so during our stay. The entrance area, bar, and lounge with its beautiful staircase, all featured outstanding stained glass windows and thick oak woodwork. Limited off-street parking, no Internet access, breakfast not included, location not very close to the city center. Our room was cringe-inducing-- 1960s decor, old and moldy caulk around the bathtub/shower, and very dusty around the edges of the room.

The hotel building is an old traditional house, you may pay money to visit one of those. The rooms are outdated. The bathroom wasn't clean: hairs in the sink, dust on the handles, no bath, a thin stream of water coming out of the shower. Two taps! (Sorry, foreigners like us don't get it) In the best tradition of english B&B the heating came up for a few hours in the evening. the rest of the time it was freezing cold - no way of having a rest in the afternoon after a 5 hours driving from London (unless you put all your clothes on). The hotel is 10 min to the center. Yes, it si about 10 min walk to the city wall but all the attaractions are on the other side so you have to walk 30 more min to get to the Castle or the Minster.

Very central, the room was good value. The reception seemed to look after the bar and restaurant which caused delays if she was busy on reception. Other than that a pleasant stay would visit again when in the area.

Central location, in a beautiful part of town. Easy walking distance to shops and places of interest in town. Unexpected historical and cultural aspects: art nouveau decor, especially the beautifully-miantained semi- precious jewels incorporated in the murals in the bar. Beautiful original wooden staircase and gallery. Pleasant welcome, and good breakfast. The beds are rather rickety, and the doors clank. There is minimal sound- proofing, so it was noisy when the revellers returned after midnight. However, the positives far outweigh the negatives.
