In a secluded courtyard in the heart of York city center, this charming hotel is half a mile from York Train Station and York Minster. It has a fitness center with a gym, saunas and an indoor pool.
Score from 1331 reviews Very good
Not to long a walk to the city centre and the overall feel of the place, we are going again in a few weeks
Dropping key at reception before you go out and queueing to get it back on return as a lot of people checking in.
Our room in the annexe....quiet and good size room.
Dining room needs some TLC - very tired decor.
The room was enormous (although empty).
In the lodge opposite the hotel it was miserable. It was like a B&B from the sixties. Unloved. The bathroom was terrible. The shower was falling to bits and the water went very slowly from cold to boiling - I scalded my arm trying to turn it off. There was no space left to park - just in the road.
Friendly staff local to city centre great food lovely character building
Advertised as have plenty of parking when there is only space for say 10 cars at most the surrounding roads are all permit holders only and had to park good 10 min walk way rooms could do with bit more heating and comfortable bedding
Fascinating history about the Victorian owner who had married his mother's lady's maid, which must have caused quite a scandal at the time, and building for her a massive baronial style mansion. This was later embellished in the Art Deco style with murals of legendary heroes and swooning maidens, who enlivened our breakfast no end. Huge and wonderfully gloomy lounge with gallery around. Reasonably near the station, and an ok walk into town. Acceptable breakfast though nothing special.
Being Victorian, it was not the height of modern luxury, but pleasant enough. Lots of stairs if your room is not on the ground floor, but staff placed us on the ground floor, luckily. Nothing to warn us to lock our door, so we went out for the evening leaving our room unlocked, assuming it was self locking.
The lobby. It's the second time I've visited and it's a different experience to a mainstream hotel.
Location and the reception/lounge area was beautiful
Room quite disappointing in comparison with the communal parts of the hotel. Very basic. No character as you would expect from the building.
The staff were friendly and welcoming, the hotel is beautiful, warm and welcoming with open fires lots of period features and a good friendly bar area and the location is good for people who enjoy a walk and the walk into York is a pleasant one. Would stay again but insist on a different room.
The room was small and basic which is very noticeable because of how big and beautiful the actual hotel is. The view was of a roof and the wall of a building very close too the hotel, couldn't see the sky. the bed was two singles pushed together, however they were comfortable and clean. There was very little storage in the room. The bathroom was basic but clean, however the sink had lots of small chips in it due to age and wear and tear.
Location Some staff unfriendly Expensive breakfast
Nice modern bathroom.
A little dated decor and the floorboards of the room above us a real problem. Continually creaking at every small movement.
Car parking Location Room & hotel comfort
No lift Breakfast a bit pricey
cleanliness and charm. very friendly staff, nothing 2 much trouble for them.super comfortuble bed
bedroom spotless but a little small
Location, main hall
The toilet had an awful odour, like a wet dog!!
A fantastic place, English style!
Hotel itself; restaurant, staff, toilets, service excellent.
The room. It was cold, noisy, mattress solid (daughters), window had gap which meant a draft aand noise from the water system outside. heating was also off by 2230 hours. Beds creaky and could hear every movement from upstairs. Not a good room.
Helpful, easy going staff!
Decore a little dated but didn't ruin the experience!
This hotel is a hidden gem with original features, excellent location, staff and bathroom extremely modern and spotless.. We only stayed for one night but cannot wait to return in new year for a longer visit... Cannot praise it enough!!
Nothing to dislike we almost felt guilty for not paying more!!!!!!
nice and clean,close to town
the room we stayed in was next to the staff stair case at rear of the hotel, the constant talking and banging off the doors witch started 7 in morning and in the late evening no consideration too guest .the bathroom need some redecorating
Everything about this hotel was great from the decor to the staff nothing was a problem to them they were friendly and helpful.cant wait to go back again
Yates bar in york avoid at all costs if you dress casual they won't serve you
The location and 1 member of the staff recognised us from previous visit , the at the bar good fir the value
Sometimes can be difficult to book and the first time I stayed the breakfast was included on the price the second time it wasn't but I paid the same as the lady time
On arrival & via phone/email staff were friendly & welcoming. Amazing building, open fire place in lounge area, 4 posted beautiful bed. Good food (would be ideal if offered restaurant food all for that would like to stay in during the day & venture out of an evening). Allowed us a late check out at a very small cost (tgank you so much).
Very grand building - beautiful old property with a minstrel gallery. The staff who were all quite young could not have been more friendly and welcoming and this hotel was a pleasant 15 minute stroll from York City centre. We will certainly book again
good location, friendly staff and rooms where a good standard.
room above floorboards creaking, could hear movement when people where walking about.
open fire decorations and first impression
The hotel is good located just outside the city centre. It is a beautiful building with lots of atmosphere. The personnel is friendly and work very hard, especially the men serving breakfast. Food was good. There is a good price quality balance. Parking space around the hotel. The beds are very good with good firm mattresses.
We traveled as a group of three and booked a family room. Unfortunately there was only one big light in the room. We really missed individual bed lamps to read in the evening. The decoration of the room was rather poorly. It would be nice to have a small safe in the room.
