This historic building was once visited by Charles Dickens for his public readings. It offers a Dickens-themed restaurant, light, modern rooms with private bathrooms, and a themed bar.

The whole hotel was very dated. Any updates for health and safety were done on the cheap - smoke detectors, emergency lighting and room lighting all surface wired. Doors where painted with many coats and looked only fit for the skip!Decorating was poor throughout. Outside of the hotel was neglected too. By the reception area a cast iron downpipe was uncoupled showing damp from rainwater on the wall. There was a blockage in the soil pipe viewed from the restaurant with water coming out of the man hole cover, flooding the patio area in the garden which spoilt the lovely breakfast! Shame really - the owners have run this hotel into the ground with no apparent investment. Keep a look out for the tired antique VDU screen in reception it has almost died but there is still the feint image of the green fluorescent text! Summed it up really.
Staff were friendly and well presented. Breakfast was very good and the bed was very comfortable.
No complaint really bit dated with regards to decor but how many bed and breakfasts aren't in need of TLC.... :)
I struggled for weeks to find accomdation within my subsistence budget in reading , here I get an evening meal ,free WiFi ensuite room and breakfast all within budget friendly staff plus the foods great I've tried everything :) sky sports in comfy lounge all round good stay.
Heating system was working while the weather was nice, so it was really too hot in the bedroom even with windows open.
The bar was friendly with some people taking a beer during the night.
Although on the whole the hotel was clean you could tell that it's décor was in need of a little care and attention, a little dated shall we say.
The staff were all friendly and helpful. Having read some of the previous reviews I wasn't expecting the Savoy so wasn't overly surprised by the hotel. What do you expect to get for £50.00 in Reading over the Easter weekend with a fried breakfast included?
overall cleanliness and look of the hotel
breakfast was good
The first impressions don't give do the hotel any favours, the reception is run-down and looks shabby, which is disappointing because the room was very pleasent and clean.
The bedroom was spotless, although not very modern. Bed seemed to be recently replaced and was very comfortable.
The bed was hard and squeaky. The hotel was run down.
The breakfast was okay
Table cloths, mats and some serviettes where dirty with food drips. Had to ask for tea at breakfast and had to remind the waitress on three consecutive days. No cereal was out you had to ask for it.
Easy to find. Comfortable bed. Quiet room. Evening meals where a pleasant suprise.
My room looked a bit old (especially the bathroom), and cooked breakfast was good, albeit I would have liked some cereal or fruit.
Good location for university, 5 minutes away from campus, but far away from town centre (15 minutes bus ride). All in all I had a pleasant stay and a good night sleep.
The decor was seriously tired, out-of-date and in urgent need of updating and redecorating. There were also minor issues with the room such as the soapdish hanging off the wall. Staff were polite, but not exactly welcoming.
The room was clean and adequate. Breakfast was the best part of the stay.
Ensuite very dirty hair in sink. Room ok needs an update. Reception helpful but not friendly
It was ok
Everything. It was dirty and have come away with flea bites, you need to be paid to stay there
A very inexpensive hotel a bit worn but clean. Comfortable enough for a night and an excellent breakfast.
We were looking for somewhere cheap and comfortable - and we found it
good quality sausage in breakfast
Manners of the staff
Close to work
WiFi connection was very slow in the evening and I couldn't Skype my friends but this was probably because the hotel was full.
The warmth of the building. Staff very helpful and the breakfast menu was amazing.
Fabric in bedroom and en-suite in need of renovation.
Location very suitable. Food quite good. Wifi excellent
wi-fi always failing Breakfast waiter not concentrated on his job Staff don't make efforts to please
Assorted Breakfast. well cooked.
This is a tired looking hotel. It needs a complete makeover, really. And the traffic in the morning... Took me 40 minutes to go 2 miles. Not the Hotel's fault, I know.
Nice staff, close to Reading / Winnersh etc. WiFi was excellent. Breakfast was ok. But great value for money. Free car parking. M&s Simply food only 5 min walk away.
Very friendly. Excellent food of evening and breakfast. Secure parking. Will be using again when in area
Wifi experience was a little disappointing when using Skype. The commute into Reading is a little slow and involved waiting for a space to open up as you drive out of the hotel. Doors banging, noise from adjacent rooms can be frustrating.
The place is cheap and clean. Breakfast is prompt and of good quality. There is an evening menu. Plenty of parking and open 24 hours
Showers were in a dirty state and the water was tepid. Room compact and an analogue tv, not as what the picture of the room looks like
The lounge and bar facilities were fine.
