We enjoyed our stay in this clean well run hotel, staff helpful and friendly. We arrived by train and took us about ten minutes to walk from the station, being fit this was good for us, worth noting it is a steady uphill climb from station to hotel.

The location is deceiving in being described Royal Mile. It took a few attempts and asking directions from locals to get to it, by going down a close from the Royal Mile down to the Cowgate.

My stay at Holiday Inn was very relaxing and most importantly centrally located to all major attraction that Edinburgh has to offer. The morning breakfast where well prepared and a most delightful means to start a energetic tour of the city. The shower facility in room 009 is not level so when showering the water would collect in the corner and flood out onto the bathroom door and then run to the corner of the room causing flooding and a mess to clean up.

The hotel is close to the city centre and castle and convenient for the main station. The breakfast room was in the basement and cramped when busy. There were very few staff on duty and no indication at the entrance that it was all self service. The selection of hot food was extremely limited.

The Edinburgh Holiday Inn Express is one of Holiday Inn's 'slimmed down' hotels, which aims to provide lower prices for its guests by offering fewer facilities at the hotel. So, the hotel is rather like a professional B&B, offering comfortable rooms, breakfast in the morning and a 24hr reception, but no restaurant or gym etc. A sensible idea for a pricy city like Edinburgh! The hotel seems to be quite new and was spotlessly clean throughout: rooms, reception and public areas (I almost felt guilty, walking on the carpets). Staff were polite and approachable, all the room's facilities were in perfect working order and there was wi-fi throughout the hotel, complimentary once you'd picked up a login code from Reception. The hotel is located along Cowgate in the Old Town, a short walk from the Scottish Parliament and with all of Edinburgh's main attractions within walking distance. Although there's no restaurant at the hotel, the pubs and eating places of Edinburgh High Street (The Royal Mile) are literally in the next street and the hotel staff can offer recommendations. In conclusion, this hotel is intended to provide an affordable but comfortable alternative to Edinburgh's many, many more expensive hotels and, in my opinion, it does a good job of it. I can only think of a couple of minor irritations: The air conditioning unit in my room worked fine, but distinctly loudly. Along with the hum of the airflow, I got an intermittent series of gurgles, clicks and beeps which several times had me getting out of my chair to see what on earth was making that noise. The breakfast room seemed quite small and crowded and included as a bit of an afterthought to the hotel. But again, that's sort of the point of the 'Express' chain, I suppose.

Central to where we wanted to visit. Nice buffet breakfast - good choice if foods. the sofa bed was very uncomfortable. The buffet breakfast bar was small and when it was busy it was extremely awkward to make your choice. Layout could be better thought out.

The Staff at the Hotel were very efficient and friendly, done anything you asked of them. Though the hotel is not what you expect when you walk in, reception bar and television all in a very small space, it does fine for a city break. Continental breakfast does just fine, plenty to eat and drink, they have added scrambled egg sausages and beans. The rooms were very clean and the bed comfortable. The hotel is located just of the royal mile, but anyone with walking difficulties may struggle because you have to walk up two very steep hilly streets to get to it.

Hotel was a reasonable price and clean and comfortable, good location for castle, shops, pubs and resturants, good value has breakfast was included in the price buffet with hot food and was very good. Breakfast room was very busy sunday morning and over crowded and nearly lost our seats when went to get food, staff delayed opening the overflow room and only one coffee machine and that broke during breakfast. In room 212 and got no reception for mob phone

We really liked this place - staff, cleanliness, well designed, breakfast all very good. As a light sleeper, I was disturbed by the air conditioning unit's flashing green light, so had to turn it off.

Very friendly staff from the moment I arrived, breakfast service and checking out. The Express concept works very well for city centres but I would never choose to stay in one out of town. Also like all-on pricing. I can't be doing with extras for breakfast, broadband, using the shower etc Nothing. Loved it and will stay again.

Staff were very helpful. The location of the hotel is ideal for sightseeing. Central to lots of attractions. Room very comfortable. We will definitely return. Breakfast facilities were a bit cramped at busy times. Next time we will not bring the car as it wasn't really needed during our stay and parking proved to be very expensive.
