Fownes HotelCity Walls Rd, WR1 2AP Worcester (Show map) Good, Score from 225 reviews“This I think was my fourth stay at the Fownes. I have always been impressed by the friendly, helpful staff and the size and comfort of the rooms plus being close to the City centre.”

Offering comfortable rooms with private bathrooms, The Fownes Hotel is only a short walk from central Worcester. Formally a Victorian glove factory, the hotel is by Birmingham canal. Most of the spacious rooms have showers and bathtubs and all come with a TV and DVD player. The stylish rooms also feature tea and coffee-making facilities and a hairdryer. King's Restaurant offers a wide selection of dishes prepared by a creative and skilled team of chefs. Using the finest fresh ingredients, there is a strong focus on seasonal local produce. Worcester Cathedral is just a 5-minute walk away, while Worcester Race Course and cricket ground are also within easy reach. Cheltenham Race Course is a 25-minute drive from the building. Having read mixed reviews, we were both really suprised at how good the hotel was. We stayed on a very quiet Sunday night (think there were only about a dozen guests!) but would be happy to return at any time. We stayed in a double room, very clean and smelled fresh. Time had been taken with making the bed etc ~ olde style hospital corners etc ~ bed was very comfy and linen spotless. Room was a good size, with the usual desk, chair, wardrobe, tea/coffee making, trouser press etc. Room was also warm and draft free, also very quiet ~ no noise from road. Hotel smelt fresh, and we saw several cleaners while there, ensuring glass was polished n floors etc spotless. Good attention to detail. Breakfast was good in the morning, staff attentive & sincere. The chef even came out after seeing me browsing the english breakfast to ask if id like anything cooked fresh (even though everything looked fine as it was) then came back into the dining room with a fresh fried egg (even though I dont eat them, it was a lovely thing to have done! Very impressed) I made two phonecalls to the hotel, once to check the booking and once to report an item left in the room ~ both calls were taken by friendly professional, friendly staff ~ this hasn't always been our experience at other hotels I can add. The central location is ideal for town and the free parking is an absolute bonus (something the nearby travel lodge and other central hotels lack, so beware of this when u are booking as parking is extortionate in worcester I think) Only slight negative observation was that the decor looks a bit tired but it was obviosuly done to a good standard when designed & although old, does not look grubby ( I know I sound obsessed with cleanliness but have had some awful experiences with unwashed linen etc in other hotel!) we would go back there no problems and would happily recommend it to anyone.

all staff very, very friendly, perfect location just 2 minutes stroll to the city centre and the same distance to the river severn which was beautiful...would definately stay at the fownes hotel again,if we were travelling to that area again..all i would say is if people were thinking about it,ask for a room at the side or the back of the hotel,as the hotel is situated on the very busy city walls road,we had a room at the side and heard no noise whatso ever..the rooms at the hotel are the biggest hotel rooms we have ever stayed in and we have stayed in quite a lot...so,,,go for it. nothing at all...it was just perfect..

The proximity to the railway station. Arriving to find that it was colder inside the hotel than outside. There was nowhere to meet my family that was warm and comfortable. The dinig facilities for the evening were poor and the staff had been poorly trained if at all.

The location for the Cathedral and shopping was excellent. Hotel staff were not aware of the dinner special offer, but it worked out OK in the end.

The staff were excelent and very attentive. We were staying as it was our daughters graduation. Our daughter had problem in parking in the town due to the ceremony and was allowed to park at the hotel for a couple of hours. The food was very good and plenty of it, the breakfast is one of the best out of all the hotels we stay in and we stay in a lot due to my husbunds work. If you reallty want to chill out go to the green room/library take a coffee and a good book and relax. Creaky floor in the bathroom, but it is an old building.

Friendly and helpful staff, good location for city, good car parking. Very noisy room. Very warm on the day I stayed and opening the windows made the road noise very disturbing. Choice of too hot or too noisy so not a lot of sleep possible.

Ideal situation for City and Cathedral, with added value of free 24 hour residents car parking close to town. Rooms would be noisy unless at rear. Facilities lack inspiration.

Good size and clean room with usual facilities. Tv could do with updating ours had very few channels. There are 9 million smokers in this country so better smoking facilities and smoking rooms please. We would have stayed longer if there were better facilities for smokers. Very unwelcoming reception area felt like a dentist waiting room. No smoking rooms.

Liked central location. Main course meal on the second night included in the b&b price. We found the bathroom to be rather outdated and in need of some tlc. The room decor was a bit tired, in particular the tv needs to be replaced with something more modern, internet access should be made available in the hotel rooms.

Excellent location. Spacious room. really comfortable bed. Didn't have breakfast because it was really expensive - more than main course prices for dinner. Hairdryer in the room wasn't working properly.

Location was good. The hotel can do with a refresh. The carpets and decor is looking a little tired. The hotel meal was disappointing for the price.

Excellent location with good car parking facilities. Rooms are of a high standard of both maintenance and cleanliness. The evening meal arrangement on Thursday 2nd Feb was chaotic and the standard of food poor to modest at best. There was clearly a lack of management input and the available staff are to be praised for their efforts in trying to deal with both a large party and individual diners not wishing to be in the loud atmosphere present in the bar. I have used Fownes previously for business and the poor restaurant service/food was the reason our business went elsewhere so I wasn't too surprised.

Great location, comfortable rooms, excellent friendly staff. I have stayed at the hotel several times now and it is my first choice when visiting Worcester. Nothing at all except having to get out of bed early because I have to catch an early train! Oh well I suppose you have to go home sometime.

Fownes Hotel is in a very good location, a short walk to Worcester City Centre with lots of restaurants nearby. There are plenty of car parking spaces. The rooms are looking a bit tired and the corridors are rather tatty. Having said that, it wasn't expensive to stay.

The hotel has the advantage of good parking and is near to city centre. Whilst the hotel is value for money it has very little character or warmth despite the friendliness of the staff. Lack of character or "warmth"

“The location was excellent as we travelled by train, Foregate St station is about 50 yrds away. The fact it had a pool and sauna ws great after a hard days shopping in the excellent Christmas market. Room was full of space and the double bed was large and comfortable. The Special £20 set menu for Christmas including a glass of wine nd three courses was excellent value ( Cranberry Sauce was delicious ) Staff were friendly and very helpful. Will probably come again for the market next year.” Peter, West Wickham. Kent |
