The hotel was modest but reasonable value for money, and was clean and quiet. My bathroom was particularly nice but the bedroom could have done with a lick of paint to cover up scrapes on the walls, and a hole was visible near the window where a curtain tie back had been removed. The location was useful to me as I needed to walk up to the area of the castle which was about five minutes away, an there was a fuel station almost opposite the hotel which was handy as I was running on empty when I arrived. I was pleased to see a floodlit car park behind the hotel with a tidy finished surface. The room was to the side of the building and was very quiet, and the staff were polite and helpful. Overall I was happy with the experience. Not a complaint but I found the door of my room incredibly difficult to open as I have a bad back. This may not affect fitter visitors.

Close to Newport town centre with free parking. Helpful staff. No one around when fire alarm went of. No one around when we went for breakfast at arranged time, so gave up. Just leaving hotel when lady turned up.

The Gateway hotel was great value for money - it was close to Newport train station for easy links into Cardiff - about a 5-10 minute walk maximum. The hotel room was lovely, we had the attic converted room and was very nice with coffee / tea facilities, ironing board, iron, heated towel rails, modern shower, nice size double bed and a flatscreen wall mounted for bed time viewing with a nice sized window also. Great cooked breakfast in the morning too - worth the £5 extra pp for the decent breakfast - great service at breakfast also. The shared access areas / stairwell could do with a lick of paint - it's a shame as I saw that first and thought, okay room is not going to be much but the room was fantastic completely the opposite so to avoid first impressions, they should match the hall decor to the high quality of the rooms.

Hotel was on the main street with private parking, staff were friendly. Breakfast was good value. Heating wasn't on in the second building this made the stay chilling instead of a cosy one.

Good central position within Newport. Nice room, well presented. Great breakfast, friendly staff. One major issue was no hand rail on steep stairway to room. Accident waiting to happen! Does not comply with Building Regulations.

Lovely, comfortable room in a convenient location. Plenty of parking spaces, and wifi worked well. The room wasn't very clean- there was dirt in the shower and behind the towel rail. Reception was not 24 hours as stated- whenever I needed something from reception there was noone there so I had to wait outside in the cold and call them on my mobile!

Great hotel if you want to visit Newport & Cardiff. Nice room and very friendly staff. Breakfast was good enough for a hotel in Newport, so don't expect a big buffet. Be sure to try it at least once when you stay here.

The owners of this hotel are very nice, very pleasant people. We had a good breakfast. The room was very nice. A handy location for the city centre Although I was in a refurbished annexe there were still some maintenance and house-keeping issues to be resolved. There were no instructions for the phone which was probably to be used for internal and external calls but it wasn't clear. This needs to be sorted out as a guest may need to get hold of reception, which was in another building, in an emergency. There was also no fire escape instructions in the room. .
