The location, in the market square, is excellent. The rooms at the back next to the car park are very convenient - especially if you are staying for just the one night.

The food and service was excellent and the staff extended a warm Yorkshire welcome. I was intrigued by Currie's Corner a tribute to an ex-Lancaster pilot and author who wrote his WW2 memoirs in his favourite watering hole.

    There was nothing to dislike.

Lovely breakfast, peaceful night's sleep, friendly and helpful staff

Arrangements for returning to the hotel late at night could have been clearer. We were delayed on our journey and feared being locked out. A secure keypad code could have been provided, or a fob to allow access after the doors had been closed for the night

Nice small hotel with extremely helpful owners and staff. We stayed as a base for one stage of the TdF so had to be up early to get to the course. Cooked breakfast wasn't due to start until 8:30 but was brought forward to accommodate us. Also arranged for sandwiches to be made to take as a packed lunch. The Black Sheep Velo beer was a welcome surprise when we arrived and was served well.

Quality of beer, thoughtful considerations regarding storing bikes, breakfast provided earlier than normal mindful of the desire to get to York before the start of the race. No-restrictions car parking.

Seemed expensive compared with a similar stay in Lancashire the previous weekend.

Location excellent and no problems with parking. Spacious and very comfortable room.

Clientele almost exclusively elderly couples and nosey locals. No TV in the bar, so unable to watch World Cup and have a beer. Breakfast times a bit restricted between 08:00 and 09:00 only. Some of us like a long lie. I wouldn't recommend the hotel for young couples, with or without children, or for solo travellers who want to remain anonymous.

The George is an old fashioned inn and all the better for it. The choice if ales is very good and the standard of the food is surprisingly high.

The room had only been given the most soaring of clean before we arrived, the bathroom also needed more attention. The bedding was clean however.
