Score from 131 reviews Very good
The style of the hotel and décor, the grand staircase, the food, the entertainment in the ballroom, the friendly and helpful staff, the views from the front of the hotel and the walks around the grounds, the quietness of the place.
The size of the room was a bit small and it would have been nice if there had been biscuits with the hospitality tray. Also there was no "do not disturb" sign to put on the door. Would have liked bottled water in the room too.
Quiet country location, nearby walks, great views from lounge, close to Hadrian's Wall.
Stylish, but decor a bit dated.
Excellent staff and great location
I liked the staff very attentive and looked after me very well.
The bathroom was very noisy. Something like a pump worked ever now and then making a disturbing noise.
Food very ordinary
Everything about this hotel was brilliant, the staff, food, location, view, rooms were all excellent! Given the chance I'll be staying here next time! They have a ball room and evening entertainment, so much fun and can't wait to come back.
Breakfast! Ideal location for our needs
Whole place a bit dated and in need of at least a coat of paint.
Great location for exploring Hadrian's Wall Great breakfast buffet Great atmosphere There was a cabaret show on the night we were there, mainly for some elderly coach tours, we joined in and had a great time
the beautiful, spacious room. the views. the food. the staff. Everything!!!
Helpful staff, well maintained and colourful gardens. And a great value and tasty evening carvery. Ideal location for exploring Hadrians Wall or visiting the Dark Skies
Not under the control of the hotel, but this location is not well served by O2 mobile phone coverage, especially in my room at the rear of the building. A shame when an Airwave (Emergency Services) mast is located in the rear car park. Poor O2 signal at the front of the building too, which as an O2 employee, I will report back to the relevant radio planning team.
Everything except the food and the presence of two coach parties
It was not what we were looking for: Large number of rooms Mass produced breakfast Dinner in bar mediocre
Walking on the Hadrian's wall path on a long and tiring day from Chollerford, I could see the Gilsland Spa Hotel from the valley, a mile or so before I arrived in Gilsland. I was aware of the extra kilometre I would have to walk out of the village, in order to get to the Gilsland Spa Hotel, but it was well worth the extra distance. I had ordered a basement room, so I wasn't expecting much, but I was pleasantly surprised to be in a large spacious, airy and light room, which didn't have the view but permitted lots of natural sunlight through the windows. The room facilities were excellent and a nice hot bath revitalised my senses. The food was excellent in terms of value for money and taste and the portions were quite plentiful. A walk around the sublimely beautiful grounds before dusk was well worth the effort and blessed with amazing panoramic views across the valley, the experience was inspirational. Breakfast was at eight o clock, the following day although I was told I could request it earlier if I needed to. Breakfast was excellent too!
Breakfast was excellent. Very helpful and friendly staff. Parking was no problem. Large bedrooms and bathrooms.
Staff couldn't get booking correct.Teas only served up till 4pm.Noisy rooms when entertainment on.Very poor choice of breakfast no continental offered. No glasses for fruit juice & no yogurt.Meal arrangement unsatisfactory.
Arrived late at night the man on reception was very helpful and friendly even though he had no record of my booking which was extremely annoying since I had a confirmation email on my phone. He went out of his way to sort out the problem and did eventually find us a room, though this took some 30 minutes. On s
On arrival after midnight was told that there was no record ofmy booking. I showed the receptionist the confirmation email on my phone. He phoned his manager for advice and after trying several rooms eventually found an empty double for us. The whole process took at least 30 minutes if not longer. I must stress that it wasn't the fault of the receptionist, but the hotels system which seems to be a bit of a shambles. When we eventually got into a room every thing was fine with no more problems.
Good breakfast Good evening meal Very close to sites we were visiting along Hadrians wall
Most guests over 70 Long wait for evening meal Lots of spiders in room 137
The ambiance. An older hotel which does show her wrinkles, but is immaculate, staff pleasant and helpful. Beautiful area to wander in. Pub served excellent dinner and were very accommodating. We enjoyed the overnight stay.
The location is excellent, overlooking the rolling hills, with a majestic setting atop a hill.
Uncomfortable bed, the whole hotel needs some refurbishment / updating / investment. The bar and meal area is particularly grim.
Very very dated needed to change rooms 3 rd time lucky
Everything - accommodation, food, staff, entertainment, terrific views all round, great walks, everyone so friendly. It was so relaxing. The staff were all so friendly and helpful. We enjoyed looking up the history of Gilsland Spa we were there because I was born there 1945 and so I was searching for info on my birth it was all so fascinating. Hope to go again in the future for a longer stay .
Big, airy room. Very clean. Value for money. Food was much better than the hotel info described. Beautiful, extensive grounds. Lovely woodland walks. Will definitely use this hotel again.
We were a wee bit younger than the average 'bus trip' clientele using the hotel, but we knew this before we booked.
Staff were fantastic, especially the manager Les. Location was lovely, if you didn't need to be on Hadrians Wall path. Rooms a good size. Good value. Excellent carvery.
It was further from the Hadrian's Wall path than we expected, which was key for us as we were walking the whole 84 miles and the day we arrived at this hotel was a 22 mile walk anyway, so for this hotel to be further away and up a hill too was not ideal.
The Gilsland Spa is in a beautiful location and as it was very quiet when I visited I found it very relaxing and excellent value for money. I loved the gardens with views.
Some areas upstairs are showing wear and tear and the dining room and main bar lack the character that has been maintained in the rest of the hotel.
