Gardens, location, views, history. We were fortunate to accidentally meet someone while out walking, who was a frequent visitor to the Spa. He gave us the full history of the building and the immediate area. This made the visit even more interesting. It is even more interesting to those interested in the Roman occupation of England with good parts of Hadrian's wall still standing nearby. Hotel was nice and warm with large log fire burning in the bar. It would be a good place to visit in winter.
Some parts of the hotel look a bit dated and more signage is required for new visitors so they find their way around. Plastic soap dispensers in bathroom hard to press.
Poor wi-fi, which was only available within a few meters of reception. This was especially problematic because there's little or no phone reception at this hotel. Uselessly dim lighting in bedroom. Staff seemed like they were doing us a favour serving us (particularly the grumpy barman who didn't even know when breakfast was served and didn't make any effort to find out). Receptionists need retraining.
Welcoming staff, really really comfortable room and after a massive walk (sponsored!) it was so nice to have a bath!
The place is pretty huge - no problem with that - but somehow it felt a bit institutionalised. This is not a negative (only for me who had already walked 20 miles and was without a car) but could you consider picking up exhausted walkers from the village?
Everything. Lovely Room. Good Facilities. Friendly Staff.
The only thing that I can comment on negatively were the pillows . . . not comfortable at all!!! The party I was travelling up to meet thought the same!
Good location, cheap comfortable room(without a view).nice large bathroom, with very hot water. Good breakfast.
Hotel a bit soulless noisy plumbing.
Lovely old place in an easy to find location
Wifi only worked in the foyer not in the rooms or even the bistro, which was very inconvenient
We stayed in Room 203 the views are fantastic overlooking the valley. Dinner was just great and very good value.
Staff service was very good, always helpful and on hand. Good parking and set in fantastic countryside just outside the Village and was easy to find
Internet connection poor, limited to reception area and not always accessible then. One small point, room door was to short at the bottom and let a lot of light into the room at night time, so the bedspread was useful to cover
The style of the hotel and décor, the grand staircase, the food, the entertainment in the ballroom, the friendly and helpful staff, the views from the front of the hotel and the walks around the grounds, the quietness of the place.
The size of the room was a bit small and it would have been nice if there had been biscuits with the hospitality tray. Also there was no "do not disturb" sign to put on the door. Would have liked bottled water in the room too.
Quiet country location, nearby walks, great views from lounge, close to Hadrian's Wall.
Stylish, but decor a bit dated.
Excellent staff and great location
I liked the staff very attentive and looked after me very well.
The bathroom was very noisy. Something like a pump worked ever now and then making a disturbing noise.
Food very ordinary
Everything about this hotel was brilliant, the staff, food, location, view, rooms were all excellent! Given the chance I'll be staying here next time! They have a ball room and evening entertainment, so much fun and can't wait to come back.
Breakfast! Ideal location for our needs
Whole place a bit dated and in need of at least a coat of paint.
Great location for exploring Hadrian's Wall Great breakfast buffet Great atmosphere There was a cabaret show on the night we were there, mainly for some elderly coach tours, we joined in and had a great time
the beautiful, spacious room. the views. the food. the staff. Everything!!!
Helpful staff, well maintained and colourful gardens. And a great value and tasty evening carvery. Ideal location for exploring Hadrians Wall or visiting the Dark Skies
Not under the control of the hotel, but this location is not well served by O2 mobile phone coverage, especially in my room at the rear of the building. A shame when an Airwave (Emergency Services) mast is located in the rear car park. Poor O2 signal at the front of the building too, which as an O2 employee, I will report back to the relevant radio planning team.
Everything except the food and the presence of two coach parties
It was not what we were looking for: Large number of rooms Mass produced breakfast Dinner in bar mediocre
Walking on the Hadrian's wall path on a long and tiring day from Chollerford, I could see the Gilsland Spa Hotel from the valley, a mile or so before I arrived in Gilsland. I was aware of the extra kilometre I would have to walk out of the village, in order to get to the Gilsland Spa Hotel, but it was well worth the extra distance. I had ordered a basement room, so I wasn't expecting much, but I was pleasantly surprised to be in a large spacious, airy and light room, which didn't have the view but permitted lots of natural sunlight through the windows. The room facilities were excellent and a nice hot bath revitalised my senses. The food was excellent in terms of value for money and taste and the portions were quite plentiful. A walk around the sublimely beautiful grounds before dusk was well worth the effort and blessed with amazing panoramic views across the valley, the experience was inspirational. Breakfast was at eight o clock, the following day although I was told I could request it earlier if I needed to. Breakfast was excellent too!
Breakfast was excellent. Very helpful and friendly staff. Parking was no problem. Large bedrooms and bathrooms.
Staff couldn't get booking correct.Teas only served up till 4pm.Noisy rooms when entertainment on.Very poor choice of breakfast no continental offered. No glasses for fruit juice & no yogurt.Meal arrangement unsatisfactory.
Arrived late at night the man on reception was very helpful and friendly even though he had no record of my booking which was extremely annoying since I had a confirmation email on my phone. He went out of his way to sort out the problem and did eventually find us a room, though this took some 30 minutes. On s
On arrival after midnight was told that there was no record ofmy booking. I showed the receptionist the confirmation email on my phone. He phoned his manager for advice and after trying several rooms eventually found an empty double for us. The whole process took at least 30 minutes if not longer. I must stress that it wasn't the fault of the receptionist, but the hotels system which seems to be a bit of a shambles. When we eventually got into a room every thing was fine with no more problems.
