The Gomersal Lodge is an ideal base for touring beautiful Yorkshire. The Gomersal Lodge, formerly named High Royd, was built for Mary Taylor on her return from New Zealand in 1860. Mary Taylor became famous because of her friendship with Charlotte Bronte which lasted until Charlotte's death in 1855. She was an inspiration and a driving force to Charlotte Bronte, encouraging her to go to Brussels which provided the experience on which her novels "Villette" and "The Professor" were based. The Taylor family and their home, Red House in Gomersal (now the Red House Museum) are recognized as the models for the Yorke Family and Briarmains in Charlotte Bronte's novel "Shirley". Mary's own novel was "Miss Miles" or "A Tale of Yorkshire Life 60 Years Ago", but she wrote many published articles asserting feminist views. Mary Taylor lived at High Royd until her death on March 1st, 1893. She is buried in the graveyard of St. Mary's Parish Church in Gomersal. Hotel Rooms: 9

The room was nice and surrounding countryside pretty The hot water in room 5 was luke warm and the shower did not work. The breakfast was delayed due to staff not turning up which delayed my start. The chairs were very dusty and cuttlery dirty. £7.00 for uncooked mushrooms and the cheapest sausages is not value for money. I will not be using this hotel again.

Exterior appearance pleasant staff pretty location/setting gardens Booked a twin, Put in double, no twin available as wedding in progress and twin given to bride to change in, this was very awkward as a twin had been booked for a reason.(did not have time to find alternative hotel as attending an event) Tatty, dirty, what could have been a pleasant room with wonderful views overlooking the garden had a dressing table infront of the wardrobe so impossible to hang anything ,cracked mirror, paint messily daubed on walls batman duvet covers on a double bed! (Very romantic! Not!) bathroom so badly laid out had to be a contortionist to get to the toilet! Which flooded over when flushed.full english comprised of 1 egg 1 sausage 1 hash brown half a teaspoon of shredded mushroom and a plate swimming with beans (no bacon no tomatoes)(

Beautiful grounds, feels like your in the country but 5 mins from small village of cleckheaton that has some shops, bars & restaurants. Also 15- 20 mins to Bradford/ Leeds city centres. Was good value for room only, cheap & cheerful ok for 1 night. . The hotel looked like some renovation had been started but not finished. Walls were newly painted but furniture was older but serviceable. The bed was a little hard & squeaked. The bathroom was small but again serviceable but there was some mould behind the shower door. Not sure if you can still have breakfast here, it was not mentioned when we checked in & there was no sign of it when we checked out but we may well have missed it as it was 10am, there are some good cafes (E.g the crown cafe) in cleckheaton that do good value breakfasts or there is always weatherspoons. You get what you pay for & for this reason I would stop here for a night again. There is a lot of potential waiting to be unlocked.

The proprietor was very courteous and the building is a nice old Yorkshire stone house of Victorian date with some character. The grounds are extensive and it is off the road and therefore, free of traffic noise. There was ample parking The TV didn't work (or we couldn't work it out). The bathroom was so small it was difficult to enter. There was no water or drinking glasses in the room. The jug kettle was tiny and difficuly to fill. The carpet was stained. The double bed was quite small. The stair carpet was worn.

Convenient for visiting family. Very helpful young member of staff (only member of staff!!) in morning. Empty!! No brochure in room re: breakfast times etc. No music, or ambience.. Silver-fish in shower. Strange reception area at end or corridor - kitchen door open alongside revealing greasy equipment
