The kindness and willingness of the staff to help with anything.
The wifi and television connections were not great.
slow service in bar lounge area and parking or lack of
If you are looking for a perfect hotel, this is as close as you can get.
Dining room is fabulous and excellent breakfast.
A bit tired in the public rooms, and bland colours. It needs a facelift in the residents lounges.
The setting with the sweeping drive is very impressive, plenty of very helpful staff to assist with parking and luggage movement. Reception was well staffed with a pleasant approach to customers. The public rooms were well appointed and again very well staffed with good numbers giving attentive service. Dining room is not too crowded and again well staffed in both numbers and level of service.
The choice from the Garden Restaurant menu was limited, unless you were willing to pay additional supplements to increase the range. Too many items were listed with extra charges, not good enough for a 5 star dining experience. No fridge or mini-bar in the room, broken curtain closing system in the bathroom. However the worst thing of all was a bed that resembled a lump of cotton wool, being so soft it was very uncomfortable, which must have been difficult to achieve as it appeared to be two singles joined together. The softness was not universal at it was interrupted by regular lumps.
Ours was a nostalgic visit; we had our wedding reception at the Grand Hotel in October 1988. Now one of our friends lives in Eastbourne, we wanted to visit him so we chose to stay at the Grand. Nothing much has changed in 26 years. The service is still impeccable, from the doormen who helped us when we arrived in a state of some chaos following a tyre blow out en-route to the receptionists and the waiters. Housekeeping staff invariably greeted us in a polite and friendly manner in the hallways. Our room was spacious and the beds comfortable. Internet access was fairly good in the room but better in the public areas. This is an old, very big and dense building which must make providing WiFi reception a challenge. The bathroom was fairly small and the shower control needed a training course but storage for clothes was adequate. The food quality was uneven. Service in the dining room at both dinner and breakfast was excellent. When we had afternoon tea with our friend the service continued in the same manner and again when I had a bar meal on the second night. Having had outstanding meals on the previous two nights neither of us was particularly keen for a rich meal on our first night. I chose from the vegetarian menu and my wife had a light meal. The quality of both was at best indifferent. My goat cheese starter was particularly poor. We live in south west France where cooked goat cheese is a local speciality. The Grand's effort fell far short of what we make at home. The main course, Moroccan pepper was a mess. We felt that overall the dinner was also poor value for money. But, afternoon tea the next day was top quality. It was on a par with the Four Seasons both at the Pierre in New York and London, Park Lane. Both of those hotels prided themselves, justifiably, on their afternoon tea. Breakfast on both mornings was very good, a wide range and for a buffet style, good quality. The second evening I had a roast beef sandwich in the bar.
Dinner was not as good as it should be.
Swimming, Breakfast and parking
Always the cost, but that's life
ambience, dancing, live music
Staff very courteous, hotel very clean and well looked after. Cosy by the fire, great food and good room.
Pillows were too soft & bed a little on the soft side too. But we are used to our firmer bed!
Soft bed and the shower did not work properly.
Space and quality of public rooms in a premium position by the beach
Small bathroom with no shelf or space to put toiletries, razor etc (Room 147). For a hotel of this quality and price this was very disappointing.
Beautiful building and furnishing, with wonderful attentive staff. The breakfast was outstanding.
I do think the exterior is in need of reprinting.
room, food, staff,location
excellent restaurant, awesome lounge, helpful front of office staff
curtains in bedroom were thin and unlined, net curtain needed laundering and was punctured in different spots; fitting of carpet in bathroon was very diy-ish; when new room offered, one radiator not working and preferred return to the warmth of the old, despite its somewhat bedraggled curtains!
Breakfast and room service was amazing, we had the afternoon tea package for ourselves and two guests but felt there was too many cakes and not enough sandwiches.
Not enough sandwiches in afternoon tea package.Bed was way too soft.
We thought that the price of the meals in the restaurants excessive for what we got.and there was no alternative. We were disappointed with the menu, compared with other similar priced hotels in London.
all staff very helpful, especially catering staff. place certainly live up to its name and I will definitely look at staying again.
none I can think of
We liked the friendly & efficient staff, the comfortable bedroom & elegant public rooms, the 'evening turndown' service, the tasty room service sandwiches, the ample breakfast and the superb dinner in the Garden Restaurant.
The service, the rooms, the atmosphere and the architecture
TV's were small
tea and breakfast areas were superb, hallways are an absolutely treat too.
Our room (suite) was very narrow and didn't feel spacious. The bathroom was really small and didn't have a window. We paid good money for it and we expected a lot more to be honest. The spa was ok but the communal shower area was really gross, with moulds and it turned me off, I just went back to my room to shower. Didn't expect that from a 5 star hotel.
Made to feel very much at home from our arrival to out departure. Service beyond reproach.
Its nearly 200 miles from where I live.
The food and history
The spa was grubby and run down
Location and concierge service that park your car for you.
Room service menu pricey
Felt so special, nothing was to much trouble for the friendly staff.
One small complaint it was difficult to read the numbers in the lift
