Situated on the southern edge of the Lake District, Grange-over-Sands was originally the location of the ancient granary (or grange) used by the monks of Cartmel Priory, founded in the 11th century. The town only came into its own as a holiday destination with the introduction of the railway in the mid 1800s. Wealthy Victorians soon flocked to the attractive little spa town of Grange to escape the pollution of the big cities and to take the sea air.
Today, Grange-over-Sands has managed to retain the traditional qualities that made it so popular in the past. It has not been spoiled by the influx of big supermarket chains or unsympathetic architecture. The mile-long promenade is unique and offers visitors the chance to stroll and enjoy the wonderful views of the bay.
Cartmel, only 2 miles from the hotel, is a lovely place to visit, with its medieval market square, ancient priory, cosy pubs, quality gift shops and of course the famous sticky toffee pudding shop. It also has England’s smallest National Hunt racecourse with 3 meetings per year on a figure-of-eight course.
The hotel has commissioned a very detailed Walkers Guide Book so that guests can savour the amazing scenery and places of interest that are easily accessible from the hotel. Walks vary from the relatively easy to the fairly difficult, so there should be something for everyone
For those of you who are interested in historic houses and beautiful gardens, we have 3 of the most beautiful in England on our doorstep. Holker Hall, Sizergh Castle and Levens Hall are all within 10 minutes of the hotel and offer a great day out for all the family.
The hotel is situated in the small Lakeland town of Grange-over-Sands on the southern edge of the English Lake District,
