The friendly York Lodge is a Victorian guesthouse less than a 10-minute walk from historic central York. It offers free Wi-Fi, and rooms with flat-screen TVs and Freeview cable channels.

Just half a mile from historic York Minster, this 4-star boutique bed and breakfast retains many of its original Victorian features.
Score from 633 reviews Very good
décor very old fashioned
They made us feel very welcome. Bed was very comfortable, room clean, and breakfast was freshly prepared to your order with plenty of choice. Nothing was any trouble for them. Only a quiet ten minute walk into the centre of historical York and close to transport.
location good staff friendly food was good
good value for money
The owners are nice, friendly and chatty. The walk to the town center is short (15 min). The breakfast is very good. The place is clean and tidy, the room nicely furnished.
The room we ended in was cozy and very clean but very very small. The sink in the bathroom is so small that basically cannot be used properly. The tv is super tiny (not that we used it anyway).
Close to town, owvers were very nice.
The room was too small for a double bed and there was no place to put my computer. The sink in the bathroom was to small and there was a shelf over the small sink which made it very hard to spit into the sink when brushing your teeth without wacking your head on the glass.
The location was great, not right near all the traffic in the very centre but very close to the art gallery and theatre- just a short walk. The hosts were kind and helpful, not overly chatty but friendly. My room was near the top of the building, and I had an ensuite double room. It was very cosy and nicely decorated. I was impressed by the decoratively folded towels, the nice wooden furniture and the pretty, soft-tone furnishings. The bed was heaven to sleep in- so, so comfortable. The breakfast was in the equally cosy dining room downstairs where I had juice, cafetière coffee, cereal, fruit and a cooked veggie breakfast. There were also yohurts if you wanted them. Lovely brek and simple check out. Would definitely stay again.
These are only small things. The wardrobe in my room had a door which was very hard to open and close and I felt I was making rather a noise clattering about with it. Also, although it was mostly quiet, there was some noise from what I presume were drunken revellers in the middle of the night- I could've shut the window but wanted a light breeze. Also, I personally prefer to have a bath in the en-suite, although the shower was perfectly nice and clean.
Really good location as just a 10 min stroll to the edge of York centre shops and the open-top bus tours. The street is quiet and there was plenty of space to park (even on a bank holiday weekend!)We were given a free parking permit on arrival for the duration of our stay which was a big bonus. Nick and Sarah, the owners, were so friendly and helpful. They gave lots of great advice as to where to go/what to do/where to eat in and around the city. Also the cooked breakfast is excellent!
We had a fantastic time so it is hard to think of anything without being really picky! (eg, bed linen and bedroom décor in our room were old designs/dated) The only thing people might want to be aware of is there isn't a communal area to socialise/have a drink in the evening, but this didn't matter to us as we were so close to York city centre with countless pubs/inns if we wanted to have a social drink.
Short distance to york and quite location, plenty places to park outside residents, clean lodge with really comfy beds, breakfast was great and they offered me extra toast, staff where very welcoming and helpful.
I had to hunt a staff member for the welcome sheet of A4 paper that had the WiFi password on it. I'm sure it was a isolated issue. Also the coffee, tea and milk for the room was not restoked on arrival. Only small gripes!
We liked the location, the jovial owner, the free parking, and the excellent breakfast. Clean, good shower.
We didn't like both broken bed lights, which made it impossible to read or work. They were replaced after our complaints, but I find it strange that it wasn't noticed by the guest house keeping allready when the first light broke. Also the bathroom light didn't work. Beds were old and springy. The room (nr 1) looked very old fashioned. We saw some more modern rooms, so we assume that this one will be redecorated as well.
Friendly and relaxed atmosphere would recomed and stay again
The b and b is well located on a pleasant street, 5-10 minute walk from York city center.
What a disappointment! The room is really small and in poor condition except the shower redone recently. Sheets are dubious cleanness, kettle unusable because element is covered in moulds, the carpet is stained and not vacuumed (visible hair and gravels). the breakfast room smells grease, breakfast is not generous at all. Finally, when checking out, we wanted to pay in cash and the owner was suspicious and unhappy. She rubbed notes several times on a sheet of paper "to verify that they were true", and that in front of other customers. It was so ridiculous! What embarrassing moment for us and what a lack of good manners! We already had the feeling of paying too much for what it was and then we had the feeling of being dishonest people! We don't recommend this address.
We enjoyed every aspect of Grange Lodge. It was our second visit there and will hopefully return in 2015.
We have no complaints.
Sara , Nick, Tom and staff were very accommodating, great breakfast, excellent location and very affordable. Exactly what we hoped for in a guest house!
high standards of care and attention great breakfast. lovely people Pat and family from Norway
we was greeted with a very friendly welcome, particularly Nick who was very nice. Our room was at the very top of the building so we had to negotiate a lot of stairs but it was worth it for a very peaceful room which was light and airy. A real nice touch was the TV in the bathroom and whirlpool bath, great! Breakfast was very good quality and plenty of it. The walk into town is very nice too passing a local Sainsbury's and a few pubs too. We were able to park pretty much outside the property with a parking permit supplied to us.
No dislikes to mention.
The Grange offered comfortable and clean accommodation at a reasonable price and the breakfast was wonderful!
Hospitality, breakfast and comfy bed!
Bit noisy, thin walls, no biscuits with tea and coffee and shower was a bit dirty
Friendly people that owned the B&B, good service at breakfast, ideal location.
indifferent greeting had to find room. small room. no headroom round bed. no room in en suite. no tea bags. water left in kettle. mattress old worn out. tv in way when getting into bed. bed small. could not dry oneself in ensuite. hot water stopped running in am. sink in way when sat on toilet! DELUXE room? wallpaper marked, marks on carpet, bottom of wardrobes broken, bath panel didn't fit, I,m 5'11" and was stooping most of the time. £80 for 2 for 1 night. Was worth £40, watch 4 in a bed and see what you can get fot £80.
Hospitality & location
No light over the front door made it very difficult to enter the door code
Close to town, rooms lovely, great breakfast
The owners were very welcoming and friendly and the little dog Tilly was lovely. The breakfast was delicious and location was just a few minutes walk from town. The room was spotless and had everything we needed, modern and very comfy. Thank you so much :)
