We liked the very helpful young man on reception when we checked in. He found info and phone number for the local hospital where we had to visit an elderly very poorly Uncle. He was very kind. Our room was very clean and comfortable, with plenty of tea, coffee etc available. Towels were white and soft as was the bedding. Breakfast menu offered a varied choice to suit most tastes. The location is quiet and peaceful but somewhat tucked away down a twisty lane, however signposting was good. The gardens are well-kept with lots of birds and wildlife to observe. Some of the public areas seem a bit tired, and paintwork in need of upgrade around windows etc, however it is an old building which adds to its charm. Our room 10 was at the top of the house, up several flights of stairs (48) and then 5 awkward stairs down to the room. There did not seem to be much obvious fire instruction signage. It was annoying not to have a meal menu in the room as you had to go down to reception to find one. TV in the bedroom needs updating and was difficult to operate. The bed although very comfortable, was on a wooden base which stuck out at the sides making for a few banged legs !! Breakfast, full English was tasty but our request for baked beans instead of tomato was ignored. The scrambled eggs were strange and a funny colour. We felt a little awkward as we were the only guests in the room, and we had to ask for the butter from the fridge. By far the most annoying aspect were the flies, a very persistent one in the bedroom and another at breakfast. Name badges for staff would be a good idea.

Helpfulness, friendliness and consideration. When it was noticed that one of us had difficulty negotiating the stairways (no lifts) we were immediately offered a first floor room as an alternative to our allocated second floor room. We accepted. . The somewhat antiquated television facility - in line with lots of other good hotels. Even in central and southern Africa there was a limited satellite service. Perhaps guests would nick small flatscreens instead of fluffy towels if the facility were to be upgraded, or maybe sky is too expensive to install?

We stayed for one night in the same lodge as previously and enjoyed the short stay. The shower doors need replacing as they are very difficult to move.

Really enjoyed our stay, great food and lovely Christmas atmosphere with real log fires lit. Very traditional old building which is a little cranky in places but it's old and lovely! Great place for a real old English winter break.

We had a Junior Suite which was very comfortable - it was good to have room to sit and relax. The gardens were pretty and it was very convenient for Bury St Edmunds (by car). We stayed mid week so there were very few other guests and we felt like house guests in a posh country house. Breakfast was lovely (and filling). Nothing really. A few things to be aware of - the decor is a little faded in places but this added to the atmosphere for us; there isn't a lift (can't remember if this was in the online description); although the hotel was quiet when we stayed be warned that it is in the country and the chickens which roam over the lawn are not only picturesque but also wake up early and are quite loud!

The parking was easy. Great peaceful location yet convenient to Bury St Edmunds. Unfortunately there was a lack of ambience and atmosphere,so felt slightly awkward on your own. Be aware of the 4am Cockerel!!!!!!!

The cabins in the grounds were very comfortable. Athough the weather was not good if it were, to sit on the veranah and socialise would have made for an excellent experience. I highly recommend them

The hotel is in a secluded location but well signposted. Good to stay in an historic building with all it's attendant quirks rather than a sterile chain hotel. The interior is a bit tired but has tremendous potential. Food was excellent, the service was polite but very much in the family hotel style. My room was pleasant and spacious. With some investment and staff training this could be a great hotel. I wasn't too impressed with the staff discussion held in the restaurant while I was eating, not very professional. The sofa in my room was extremely uncomfortable

We stayed in one of three log cabins, which made it more like home. We could sit outside on the veranda, which suited my husband as he smokes

I booked here for two nights. At 3 am in the morning having not been able to leave my window open, hear the television or get any sleep because the room was situated over the bar and an external b b q I rang to inform the manager that I would not be staying a further night and would not pay for the accommodation. Why do these hotels allow business guests to book in when it is clear that the hotel is fully booked with wedding guests.Poor reception, waited 20 minuites for a weaiter to get the printer to work in order to book me in which happened on the first previous visit to hotel. Hotel tired and poor decoration. Hi Fi did not work
