The Grange Hotel  

The outside looks splendid and the interior decoration of the stairways and reception is reasonable. The bed was comfortable. The breakfast was good; a modern presentation of the typical English breakfast.

No airconditioning. Wasn't dirty, but wasn't sparkling clean. What we thought would be a classical, antique hotel ended up looking a bit old, shabby and threadbare. Many rooms overlook a busy main road. Way overpriced.

Staff welcoming, helpful and friendly. Room clean,attractive, comfortable and well serviced. Bathroom clean and wellprovided for. Easy walking distance to York centre. Breakfasts excellent

Very slow restaurant service--I hour wait for starters! Expensive food and poor value in some instances---decided to eat elsewhere after first night.

website is good and pretty honest. Location of the Grange is great Our arrival and parking (at 3pm) was good. The room was OK. Bed was good. The bathroom was very good with a great bath. Room cleaning was excellent.

There was no enthusiasm for the Brasserie or the New York Grill Breakfast was fine except poached eggs were seriously undercooked and table service was poor

Its location to the City Centre is the only good point in it's favour.

We had thought that paying £598 for 3 nights bed and breakfast would mean that the hotel would be the best. We were in York to celebrate our Ruby Wedding and thankfully my husband had telephoned to ask if we could have a good room as it was a special occassion. I dread to think what the room would have been like if he hadn't phoned as the room we had was quite grubby and noisy as one of the windows could not be closed properly. The hotel definately needed some tlc and we understood from others that some rooms were worse that ours. Very poor value for the price that we paid and not what we would expect for a 4* hotel. The weekend was a special occassion and thankfully we did not let the state of the hotel get us down. This is not a complaint to you but just how we feel about the hotel. I did make a complaint to reception.

The location was great within easy walking distance of York. The food was fantastic, and we thoroughly recommend the downstairs grill as opposed to the restaurant. I would thoroughly recommend the Grill to friends.

The hotel itself was a bit disappointing. There was a 1% charge for using Amex which most Hotels do not charge. The room we stayed in although in a "newer" part of the hotel had really awful wall coverings and colour scheme. The overflow in the bath leaked water through to the bedroom carpet, overall the hotel was a bit shabby and could do with a bit more attention to detail.

The staff at reception were very friendly and welcoming. We had a spacious room on the ground floor with large windows, comfortable bed, and well-appointed bathroom. Great breakfast with a continental buffet as well as hearty cooked breakfast.

The hotel staff were very friendly and helpful. When we arrived they had upgraded our room which was a nice surprise. The room and en suite were very spacious and, the beds and pillows soft and comfortable. Breakfast was excellent with a very good selection. All in all a very pleasant stay.

We booked small room at the hotel as we did not intend to use the facilities very much as we had a a family event in York and spent most of the time with them. The hotel itself was very good well located and the staff were friendly and helpfull. Breakfast was excellent.. All in all it suited us perfectly.

The only thing was as we were on the top floor and there was not a lift, the stairs were a challenge.

We like the traditional country house style of The Grange. The architecture, hall and drawing rooms give it a slight 'Downtown Abbey' feel! It is a great little escape and we can pretend to be a little grand for a day or so, but it also has a warm and friendly feel, not intimidating at all. Its just like being invited to a friends large country family home. Escapism I suppose.

Nothing really but if we must, perhaps the magazines in the drawing room could be a little more appealing, maybe some back dated issues of gardens illustrated, Home and garden that sort of thing. Maybe some honey on the breakfast buffet table(perhaps there was I may have missed it). Perhaps the reception desk could be, restored or improved some way, it looks a little sad.

Excellent room. one of the best we have had and we travel very regularly Also easy to find in busy town of York, Food was good but a bit expensive.

Cold December day and the fire was not lit in the lounge until the late evening. The lighting in the restaurant is so poor I had to use my phone light to read the menue
