I am72 and the shabby Grassmarket hotel took me back to my student days. I was touched by the sensitivity of the chambermaid. She saw that I was a reader and that the flex on the table lamp was too short for me to read in bed in comfort. She therefore put a stronger lamp into the ceiling light. The hotel needs a considerable injection of money. The carpet in my room was so yucky that I made sure that I didn't touch it with my feet. Also the tv didn't work and I couldn't close the window. I think there should be a dining room (possibly the space that is sometimes used as a bar on the 1st floor). I never went into the pub for breakfast but, surely, it must smell of alcohol and that isn't what most of us want at 8 or 9 am. See above, as the experience was defiitely a mixed one. I'll answer here the Yes/No below. I would recommend it to someone young or to someone like myself who is happy with "plain" if there are compensations.

The staff could not have been more gracious. They were as accomodatingas they could be under the circumstances. (See below). The main reasoned chose this hotel is because of the amenities offered, ie; tv, wifi, hairdryer, etc. When we arrived, sewers told that due to some renovations taking place in the hotel, Thayer were not able to offer wifi or tv. There was actually a small, 9inch tv in our room but it only had 1 channel, bbc. When we changed rooms, they stated that they were going to put us in one of their "new" rooms....however, there was no tv and still no wifi. The room was wallpapered in comic books.....? All in all, the friendliness was good, the accommodations definitely needed updating. We would stay there again because the location was perfect to just about everything...we will just double check to make sure their renovations are complete.

Everything was fine. Great location near the Waverley railway station and the Castle, nice personnel and a little bit strange architecture of the building helps to feel the atmosphere of Edinburgh.

Location was great and staff were very friendly. Rooms clean and tidy. While we were there renovations were taking place which obviously was necessary. We also didn't have internet access which made it difficult for keeping in touch with family, but again as the motel was undertaking a refit, so I imagine it couldn't be helped.

The location in the Grassmarket. It's only about a 10 minute walk to Waverley Train station and there are many good pubs , bars and eateries actually in the Grassmarket. The Royal Mile is a 2 minute walk away and Princes street is only about 10 mins away too. No remote control for the very loud tv in my room, The poor Tv reception (I mostly had no reception whatsoever). This wasn't a big problem as I wasn't in my room that often but I do like to catch the news in the morning. Although they advertise 24 staffed reception myself and another guest had to spend 20 minutes banging on the door at 6:30 am on the Sunday morning. We finally managed to get the attention of staff in the ajoining bar, who told us reception staff were helping with the breakfasts...which wasn't helpful to us!

The location was the only thing going for it. As this space is not for complaints I can not write anything else. It was a near disaster from beginning to end.

Wonderful receptio from Lizzie a welcome all the reception staff kept up during my stay. Otherwise the hotel is very tired and my room was scruffy, I wouldn't have dared to put my bare feet on the carpet. there was very little signage making it very easy to get lost in the corridoors amongst the very necessary improvement works. There was no fire notice in my room. Not the best of stays!

The hotel room was very modern and and confortable. They had a device were I could connect my iPod and listen to music on the room and on the bathroom. The location is great: right in the middle of Edinburgh, near the station and with sightseeing bus stops. The internet connection was down and the room didn't have a telephone. Also, we were on the first floor so the music coming from Biddy Mulligan's Pub was high (although i don't count it as a real problem)

I liked the fact that the room was modern as it had just been refurbished. The room was also very clean and spacious and the view from the room was beautiful. The welcome refreshments in the room was a lovely idea, they went down well! The bar underneath was a little bit noisy, however this is to be expected in a city centre location.

The location and price was right, I know it was a room at a budget price but I would expect the television to work and to have some where to sit other then the bed, so I could read or wright, also the shower and toilet area was very small

Position is very good, you are close to the Edinburgh castle and mains street of the city (200 m). Rooms are quite old and essential. I went to this hotel twice and in both case Internet was not available. No breakfast is included. Central heating is not enough to warm up the room and bathroom so the room was cold.
