Location, staff, food, gardens, and hospitality!
The building and outside areas are beautiful and peaceful. The hotel is in an excellent location. The staff were very courteous and helpful, the breakfast menu was varied and food lovely. The Clarins toiletries were a treat.
We were offered complimentary tea and scones but when we asked for them the kitchen was closed that day so could not have scones. We were also unable to book for dinner on our second night for the same reason. My sister and I stayed in the Aske room which was lovely but there were some marks on the wall and paintwork needed attention. This however did not detract from our stay and I have already recommend The hotel to a friend.
It's so quiet at night even in the centre of the city. Bed were so comfy best night night in a while. Staff were so friendly.
Amazing old building in a fantastic location and the service was brilliant
position, decor, garden
Perfect, tranquil location and stunning garden area beside the City walls. The quiet atmosphere even though just a stone's throw from the bustle of the Minster meant splendid nights' sleep. Helpful, attentive staff - the blond guy (sorry didn't catch his name) seemed to be everywhere at once and was really helpful.
friendly, personal, nicely decorated, good food
the room we had was a twin room, a bit too small
Location our room the very friendly staff the lovely breakfast in a beautiful room over looking the perfect garden
The £15 charge per day to park our car
Perfect location for walking around the ancient city of York. Pleasing historic building; secluded and quiet. Breakfast (excellent scrambled egg with spring onions!) looking out on the beautiful garden. Very nice bathrooms. Staff very nice and anxious to help; also busy! An excellent, one-of-a-kind, small family-run hotel.
Not always easy to get anyone to come to the front desk. The room was not as clean as one might expect.
lovely room and ambience, felt like staying in a private house. Great location right next to the Minster.
Drinks in the long drawing room
Breakfast on one morning was very very slow and when it arrived it was a bit shambolic, however the next morning it came at a reasonable time and was much better presented.
It felt very personal with only a few rooms in hotel& staff couldn't do enough for us.Gardens were beautifully maintained& would definitely go back.
Really beautiful luxury hotel in perfect location. Attention to detail very good and service welcoming, friendly and attentive.
Would prefer a more detailed bill although happy we were not constantly asked to sign for drinks etc. Parking charge a bit mean!
A stunning historical property set in lovely gardens and in a great location ! Friendly, attentive staff. Great choice at breakfast, all tastes catered for . Highly recommend.
Like staying in a well loved family home, full of well worn comfortable furniture ..all the more relaxing because of the imperfections. Would love to return next year and see how the decor develops. Breakfasts were amazing, as were the complimentary tea and scones in the afternoon in the garden. Both the garden and the cobbled courtyard were enchanting.
Not the hotels fault.....caught a wee bit off guard with sudden hot weather so found bedding too hot and couldn't work out how to turn bathroom towel rail off. Didn't really like the art work for sale....didn't think it suited the environment
The gardens were beautiful and relaxing. The building itself is majestic and the artefacts and artwork added a real unique ambience, loved the library and dining room. The staff were helpful, personable and informative, and couldn't do enough for us. Great breakfast.
Nothing at all. It was a thoroughly enjoyable experience.
Location and ambience of the place plus the fabulous breakfast room and breakfast spread
It's a bit pricey but I'd come back again
The welcoming, friendly, helpful staff, the wonderful views from Willoughby and comfortable four poster bed. Delightful gardens and excellent food. A romantic, relaxing stay in a historic building, with superb surroundings.
Having to pay for reserved parking. What was described by my husband as 'British Rail' cutlery!
marvellous historic building full of charm
Perfectly situated for visiting York. The property itself is very attractive and a rather nice restoration has been accomplished. The long gallery is very pleasant for tea / coffee on arrival and was a nice touch.
The shower floor unfortunately was a little grubby on the first day but we put the mat on top of the mysterious black bits and they were cleaned up for our second day. Also our stay was marred somewhat by some loud and unruly children who were seemingly allowed to run along the corridor in the private quarters as late as 10.30 pm. I know this won't be much of an issue to many, but I wanted an early night and was reading in bed quite early so found this quite annoying, especially when I thought this was an hotel and not the owner's home / B & B. I won't be returning.
Excellent does not do justice to this beautiful location, we had a view of the minister from our bedroom on one side and the city walls and courtyard on the other. Every detail of our room and the whole building was memorable.
City Centre location Relaxing Amazing beautiful building - lots of history Free upgrade! Nice view of the walls Not crowded
Not many staff around to serve drinks or give help on reception
Very beautiful location & quiet, a relaxing & peaceful place to stay. Breakfast and evening meal to a very high standard. Complimentary tea coffee and scones when we arrived, nice touch.
Complimentay drink and home made scone/cookie on arrival. Very friendly staff and excellent food. Fantastic old building with information about its history available in the lounge
The bedroom was a little grubby with numerous marks on the walls and a spilled drink stain on the carpet
Beautiful room, lovely bathroom, Clarins toiletries, good location next to minster. Gorgeous food. Lovely staff. Couldn't fault this hotel it's our second visit and can't wait to return!
No mirror on dressing table to be able to see when drying hair etc Pillows very soft would prefer a firmer one.
