Hospitality of the staff was best I have ever encountered - nothing was too much trouble from moment arrived until departure. Had a small problem with our room, was immediately attended to and we were upgraded to a marvellous room. Excellent location in the city. Extremely well appointed Lovely gardens

Absolutely wonderful! A beautiful building exuding an atmosphere of calm, peaceful, relaxed luxury. The welcome we received was just right - genuinely friendly and kind.

Loved the food, helpful staff,location. I would definately recommend it, and would definately return. Love the Clarins products in the room, and loved the homemade cookies ( nice touch) however we did only get them one day of our two day stay. Could have eaten some both days with a nice cup of tea once we returned from a full day in rainy cold York !!!

Thought the rooms were starting to look a little tired. Wished there was some way they could share the wonderful history of the building with the guests. That is part of the reason people stay because of the wonderful building and its history, but there doesn't seem to be any information readily available.

it is the most friendliest stay that we have had in York ,the rooms were excellent the best we have stayed in weve been to York many times and did not know that this gem existed. we will definately be going again.

My wife and I stayed at grays court for our anniversary The hotel is in a secluded and great location very close to York minster The themed rooms are fantastic we stayed in he Elizabeth Gray suite which was very comfortable with excellent ensuite facilities. The hotel itself is a facsinating building and the grounds are beautiful Of course it's not immaculate and i would imagine that the owners will be constantly upgrading and doing maintenance but that just adds charm to the place Brilliant location for exploring York

The hotel does not do evening meals so it has limited catering facilities although they do have a breakfast service which we booked with our room In this area I think the hotel could improve We simply wandered into the breakfast room and sat at a spare table, no one came and attended to us for over ten minutes When the waitress did arrive she took our order after having told us verbally the breakfast menu, something which she repeated to every couple who subsequently arrived and sat down. A simple menu on the table would have been much better. We ordered coffees and were a bit surprised when the waitress returned with 2 cups of coffee (why not a pot of coffee so we could refill ourselves as we waited for breakfast) Having said that the breakfast was lovely when it finally arrived but I think they could make life a lot easier for themselves in this area Would we go back?? Yes definitely the place is a great little find and you cannot help admire the people for what they have done to the place so far

Istayed overnight with my cousin to visit the York Mystery plays The Staff were without exception friendly, professional and helpful. We enjoyed the ambience of the hotel , the closeness to the Minster, which we were able to visit at our leisure the next day and to walk to without difficulty ( we are both over 80 ) Food was good nicely served , Taxis ordered for us when required , bags delivered to and from our room (2ndstory) The hotel itself has a wonderful history which would be appreciated by overseas visitors together with a typical English garden . Highly recommended

Stairs ----but not the hotel's fault anno domini on our part!

I was warmly greeted and assisted to my spacious and gracious, antique-filled en-suite. A tea-tray with home-made biscuit arrived shortly afterwards. The bed was extremely comfortable and I appreciated the complimentary Clarins toiletries. The house is wonderful - historic, with solid oak floors in the public areas - set in a magnificent town garden which was still very colourful when I arrived in early August. Gray's Court is located close to York Minster and so the sound of bells punctuated the days, adding to the sense of being part of the history of the City.

Fabulous location and historic building gave a great ambiance. Staff very helpful and courteous.

Difficult to locate. More detailed directions to the hotel are needed. External signage is also lacking (possibly due to listed building status). Seemed a little amateurishly run and attention to detail was lacking. e.g. Spare light bulbs in clear view of guests at reception desk, trailing cables from domestic looking CD player on display in long gallery (so easy and inexpensive to avoid), bar not fully stocked and a bit 'homespun' with regard to service, carpeting poorly fitted in long gallery - tripping hazard, lack of direction signage within hotel e.g To Bedrooms, To Breakfast Room etc. Some inappropriate furniture in bar area which detracted from period style (chrome tubular framed chairs) We felt that some (appropriate) soothing background music would have helped the atmosphere throughout the public areas. Breakfast buffet rather limited.

We loved the fact that we had the opportunity to stay in a beautiful and historic house in the heart of York. It was a very special place with a historic yet luxurious feel. The breakfast and afternoon tea were excellent. The hotel has a beautiful garden and direct access to the city walls. We had a wonderful stay and would definitely go back again.

The hotel does not offer evening meals but when you have the whole ofYork on your doorstep it doesn't matter.

The location was perfect for staying in York. It is in the center of town right next to the famous Minster.

I'll try to be brief here. Apparently a large family recently bought the place which had been used by the local university. Over the years it has gone thru several transformations. As a result the facility needs a lot of work--it is very run down in many areas. One's impressions is that the family is doing its best, however, they are short staff. An example. Our reservation was to include breakfast but one day we went to the breakfast room at the designated time and a note on the door said "this room is not to be used today". We checked in the kitchen---no one. We checked at the front desk---no one. Then about 10 minutes later one family member comes running down the steps with her young son trying to get him off to school. When we explained the situation to her she was rude. Her comments were: "the sign on the breakfast room door was there from yesterday", "we are closed on Mondays", "your watch is incorrect", etc. In other words instead of nicely apologizing she just argued with us in a haughty manner which of course made the situation worse. We paid and left. We did agree that she should deduct the breakfast fare from our bill. Would we stay there again--no although the old building must have been lovely at one time.

The location, building, room and surrounds were lovely. The staff were very friendly and helpful. It was also very quiet.

Hidden gem located in the heart of york. Wonderful staff, lovely food, delightful room and a peaceful place to unwind after the buzz of the city. it was fabulous to stay somewhere so immersed in history. We would definitely return to this charming boutique hotel.

Fascinating hotel in excellent central location. Extremely helpful and pleasant staff. Immaculate bedrooms and very good breakfasts.

Everything lived up to expectations - nothing to dislike.
