They put me in a better room for free - smart rooms - freeview, good temp., Blackout curtains, comfortable, uncluttered, helpful staff and service. -Thursday night is noisy downstairs night by the sound of things so get on second floor if you can. Think it might not be every Thurs though. - shower towel not big enough -dust on some surfaces in bathroom

Friendly bar downstairs with a pool table. Food menu looks good. A pleasant stay. Breakfast was a let down. My partner is french so therefore would have preferred a continental breakfast as apposed to only English breakfast. He asked for beans on toast and they had run out of beans. I'm from Reading and I know it would have taken them 5 mins to get beans from the closest shop.

This is a very attractive building in a great location for Reading's Oracle centre. Breakfast was excellent and the staff helpful. The room we stayed in was of good size with reasonable furnishings, but not well cleaned. The bathroom has lots of mould starting to spread.

My husband and I are regular visitors to Reading and usually stay at the Holiday Inn Caversham Bridge, now Crowne Plaza. This our latest visit wasn't planned and was at very short notice, I just happened upon Great Expectations whilst searching for hotels near Reading Railway Station and am I glad I did. This hotel is only seven minutes walk from the railway station and is ideally situated for shopping, the Oracle Centre is just round the corner. Great Expectations, a former theatre has a relaxing air, the huge ground floor is the public house part and is set out as a Victorian shopping street, Charles Dickens is everywhere. The staff are very friendly, pub food good and very reasonable, the rooms although not fancy are clean and functional. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Great Expectations and will certainly be back in the near future, 3 days b&b for £152.00p in Reading is certainly great value for money.

The Location This is not a complaint - I haven't the time. Hotel is very convenient and inexpensive. But the TV in the room couldn't hardly receive a signal. It was very noisy till 12.30 at night because it has a downstairs bar so you can't sleep till then. If you want food in the bar, you have to fight for a place to sit down, I almost didn't get a seat. Although food was fine and very reasonable.

It was fantastic!! I booked the hotel owing to the price and the location then realised it had a series of bad reviews and I wasn't expecting much! The room was huge, with a sumptuous four poster bed and the biggest bath I’ve ever seen. It was very romantic and I thoroughly enjoyed it! The breakfast was cooked to perfection and the staff were friendly and welcoming. I would recommend this hotel to anyone; I can’t wait to go back!! Nothing, the tv was on the blink but as soon as I mentioned it, the guy came up straight away!

The staff were absolutely lovely really helpfull they made me feel welcome and safe as a lady traveller alone. The breakfast was great and I ate there for the 3 day stay. Good value for money and comfortable news. The music did go on abit 12.30 pm on a weeknight was a bit tiring when I had to get up and concentrate in a classroom all day . That said I know it is a pub but possibly could be made a bit clearer when booking, I would probably stay there again though.

only location 1) breakfast is very poor, no choice 2) the staff didn't change the used towels 3) TV didn't work very well and the staff did nothing to repair it in spite of my request to do it. 4) the price is very high for a such kind of poor service!

I liked the bar area, breakfast was very good. Location-wise, it was perfect for Reading city centre. I expected some in-room facilities such as tea-making, an ironing board, trouser press and some storage / shelving room in the bathroom.

It has got an ancient look and the reception next to the bar, seems to be little different than usual. The room was not clean for starters. Was too exhausted when I reached the room on the 2nd floor carrying all my bags (No lifts!!). There was help from the bar but still it wasn't easy. The bed sheets had stains and the bathroom had the left overs of the visitors before me to that room. Overall cleanliness is poor! I hope the hotel management does something to change this. Breakfast was okay but wouldn't say great. However, when I complained the next day about my room, the manager promptly changed my room to another one and apologised. The other room did not have any battery in the TV remote and I gave up. Had to walk to floors down to report for even a minor thing. Great expectations does not believe in phone service, so please rely on your mobiles in case of emergency.

“I had stayed at the Quality Inn before for a similar break. I had no hesitation in re-booking for a Sat - Sun stay and I was not disappointed. I used the hotel as a base for a trip to watch London Irish and then did shopping on Sunday with a local friend. I was given an upgrade to a double room on arrival which was a pleasant surprise and the hotel suited my needs perfectly. Courteous, helpful staff, a comfortable room with a good shower and a hearty breakfast. I would recommend the hotel without hesitation. DA” David, Peterborough |
