The Great Trethew Manor is set in 40 acres of beautiful grounds, featuring a trout fishing lake and croquet lawn. The traditional rooms boast period features and wonderful views. The elegant rooms are classically decorated with antique furniture and floral fabrics. Some feature four-poster beds and exposed beams, and all have private bathrooms and tea and coffee facilities. Free Wi-Fi is also accessible in each room. The on-site restaurant serves a creative menu and selection of exotic steaks, including zebra and bison. A children’s menu and afternoon teas are also available, and light lunches and bar snacks are served throughout the day. The wonderful grounds offer pony trekking and fishing, and there is also a spacious barbecue terrace. The cozy lounge bar features a log fire, oak beams and an original flag-stone floor. Free on-site parking is also available. Surrounded by rural countryside, Great Trethew Manor is just 6 miles from historic Looe and its nearby sandy beaches. Plymouth‘s bustling town center and ferry port can be reached in 30 minutes, and Dartmoor National Park is just 30 minutes’ drive. Hotel Rooms: 10

We enjoyed watching the peacocks in the garden. The Hotel facilities were generally very poor. The toilets on the ground floor were dirty and the area towards the toilets was disgustingly dirty. As this was the "back of house" kitchen area we did not eat in the hotel because of this. The room No 14 was sold to us as a family room but it was very cramped "for 3", the carpets were dirty and needed a good clean. There were a number of flies flying around the light fitting when we entered the room and evidence of flies being swated against the paintwork. The light fitting above the top bunk bed was too close to any child that could have used it and no shade was fitted because of this problem. The shower was a disaster as the shower curtain was dark purple which made the shower area very dark and impossible to see as the lighting was on the verg of being dangerous.A serious black mould problem in the cupboard/wardrobe, so we did not use it. The main walkways were dimly lit and there was 1 working lamp in the light fitting at the top of the stairs, which made the main stairs difficult to negotiate. The emergency lighting does not comply with the current regulations BS5266: Part 1:2005 and is non-compliant and as it stands will probably render the owners liable to prosecution if an accident occurs. The owners are still liable even if there is a maintenance contract in place. There is unsafe lighting above the 2nd set of stairs and as the stairs are very steep and the door very close to the stairs it is difficult to navigate the stairs with heavy bags etc. The staff, (breakfast) were too quick to clear from breakfast and I had 1 plate removed before I had finished eating. It was disapointing to see the staff outside enjoying their own coffee after they had made the customers feel unwelcome and "in the way" The advertising mentions a trout lake but the access was so muddy and badly pathed that it was impossible to access the area without boots.

The hotel is set in an unspoilt wooded valley. The staff were pleasant and helpful. The standard overall is poor, not worth the 4 star rating. The bungalow we stayed in had a colony of bees living above the front door, and vegetation growing through one of the window frames. The beds were uncomfortable, cheap mattresses which were worn out. Plumbing was terrible, in dire need of updating, shower in our room was useless. The furnishings were outdated and scruffy, as was the décor, again not worth a 4* rating. The food was OK but very expensive, overpriced in my opinion for the standard of the cuisine. Grounds have great potential, but are untidy and poorly maintained, including JCB parked up as a "feature"! Trout lake covered in algae, not a four star vibe either. We were in the area for a family party near the hotel, otherwise we would have left immediately. We all thought it was a rip off; the fact that the location is in a pretty part of Cornwall does not excuse the low overall standard and lack of investment. Some of our group stayed in the main hotel which was been upgraded allegedly. Uncomfortable beds, poor décor and plumbing issues again...I've had better plumbing in Africa. Avoid this place if you can.

Space available in the Apartment, price, location was perfect for our requirements. Countryside setting was great and nice and quiet too. Smell of oil from the Raeburn was quite overpowering. Flies, dead and alive everywhere! Needed airing. Lack of light bulbs in lamps provided, TV in bedroom didn't work. Obvious the accomodation hadn't been used for sometime, very cold on the first night whilst heating came up to temperature. But still exceeded expectations for price paid.

Lovely location with a hotel that was full of interesting nooks and crannies and quirky objects. Very friendly, helpful staff and good food. Our bedroom needed some money spent on it including new mattresses and new flooring in the bathroom. A small amount of investment in our bedroom would have made this a hotel to definitely recommend.

No reception available and nobody answered the doorbell when we arrived in the rain, so had to find our own way into the bar. Room was cold as heating did not work in our room and was not fixed despite us reporting it. Dirty tea tray. Carpets very dirty. Shabby, jumble sale quality furniture. Only one bedside lamp - not working. No bedside cabinets. Very weak shower water pressure. No heating in bathroom. Ancient tv. No internet access available. Breakfast had cheap catering sausages and flabby bacon.

The location of the hotel is lovely, the views are excellent. The hotel let itself down in a few areas there were dead pot plants on the landing, and some of the staff weren't particularly freindly.

On our arrival we were in bungalow 2, on entering we were met with a damp, musky smell, wet carpet with stains on, mould on shower curtain, walls and ceilings. Bedding was unclean had stains on. Bed broken, oven flithy. Heater on wall looked like it would catch fire if turned on. After staying there for a night we checked out and got a full refund. Would not recommed anyone to stay there until it has been made to have a full refurbishment. Good luck if you do stay there

This was our second visit to the Hotel. We were very happy there during our first stay and the second time did not disappoint. The hotel is located well off the road and peacocks are likely to great you. The surrounding area has country walks and lots of other things to see literally around the hotel. The breakfast is more than plentiful and options include a wide variety for vegetarians. The evening meals are first class and the staff will go the extra mile. Looe, St Austell and Liskeard as well as the Eden Project are almost on the door step and there are lots of little hidden beaches which are not over run. For the children there is plenty to do, including Quad biking just across the road when one is leaving the hotel to get back to the main road. All in all a very pleasant experience and we will be visiting the hotel again. If there was a negative, please be aware that should you wish to visit and are elderly, the step to the bathroom in room 15 is really quite high and the last lot of stairs going up to the top floor a little steep. Other than that, just perfect.

I enjoyed the fact that we got our money refunded for the dirtiness of our rooms - we booked 3 rooms but saw 6 altogether and none were clean. I also enjoyed the time spent away from the hotel. The mold in one wardrobe, The hair in one of the beds, The fact we were in a 2 person double room and had only one cup and one shampoo - no hand soap or shower gel. One of the towels had brown stains all over it, The windows were covered in dead flies, the carpets were absolutely filthy, The mirrors were not cleaned, Some light fittings did not have bulbs in them, one bath had definitely not been cleaned at all and the staff said that they had 'run out' of chocolates that we were supposed to get on arrival.

Breakfast was o.k, but very limited, only got one rasher of bacon, and one sasuage, with the cooked breakfast! Mould on the wall, where the wardrobe is. Visible dust in the room. Beds extreamly uncomfortable, can feel the springs, so had to leave after the first night. Staff appeared miserable and not intrested in there work! Dust in the drawes, so left clothes on the bed. On the tea tray were left over wrappers, coffee. granules all over the tray. Cups and saucers dirty. Cobwebs in the room and the bathroom. Room had not been cleaned!

Good location Friendly staff We felt that it was rather run down and really didn't warrant the price. We were supposedly in a superior double room but the room was small and the bathroom tiny. The television was an old portable with a very small screen. The freeview box was temperamental but fortunately after a lot of fiddling we managed to get it to turn on. (having 4 at home it wasn't as though we didn't know what we were doing!) In the restaurant we were disappointed that our first two choices of dishes from the menu were not available and that the wine brought to our table was not the one we ordered. A protest that it was after all a 'merlot' and wasn't that what we had ordered didn't help the situation nor, when it was pointed out that we had ordered a 5 year old bottle and the one brought to the table was a one year old, did the excuse that it was the same wine but that the label had been updated! However it has provided us with a very good tale to tell our our wine loving friends for many months to come for which we must be grateful!

The location is perfect, very quiet, relaxed and beautiful. The children woke up to peacocks roaming around just just outside the window which they absolutely loved. Also there was plenty to keep them occupied, lots to explore, lovely walks, stables, lake etc. There were only a couple of downsides (excluding the great British weather). The children's beds were a bit uncomfortable. The mattresses in the twin room had clearly seen better days. My three year old daughter (who never sleeps well anyway) would only sleep on top of her quilt, luckily we had a spare blanket in the car. Also the heater in the sitting room area did not want to work and as it rained all week it was a little chilling first thing and later on in the evening. However, these minor issues were not enough to dampen our spirits (even the weather didn't manage this). I would recommend the Great Trethew Manor as a great place for families!
