on arrival required to pay account before access to room. When questioned responce "take it or leave it"
good service and food facilities
rooms rather tired
Very friendly staff, service was very good even though the place was very busy. The cleanliness was very good throughout.
Our room although comfortable was a bit dated and could do with some modernisation.
Helpful staff. Spacious room. Good selection on bar menu.
Some areas of furnishing in the restaurant area were quite grubby. I think it may be time for a refurbish
Water, tea & biscuits available in room. Dinner on the 2nd night.
Poor professionalism by staff when registering on arrival as first impressions always count. Room 1 was above the kitchen with no views at all.
Great value for money really helpful staff
Pub is undergoing a refurb in the next month (oct 2014) so the windows which have seen better days will all be replaced
This was a fantastic hotel for families; friendly staff and comfortable room.
Staff, value for money, food was excellent. Even though the rooms could have been more comfortable the cleanliness of them could not be faulted.
Rooms were very tired looking. Only one dining chair per room, needed comfy seats in case you wanted to watch TV. Double glazing and more modern form of heating a must.
The room was very shabby. Damp on the wall and a large area unrepaired after the moving of a TV. No amenities in the room except one wall holder for soap. No tissues, nothing. Food very poor considering they have farm shops near to them. Would not return.

No air conditioning, had to leave window open and curtain to get a breeze, overlooking courtyard at back, orange light on all night, lit room up couldn't sleep
My partner and I love the Grouse having stayed in January and the only previous fly in the ointment was the wifi which now works perfectly. They let us book into the same room as before when I rung and the staff were attentive and cheery. We will definately be back soon !
I think our breakfast had been left on the hot plate as it was a bit shrivelled and like warm when it arrived. They need to get some good ciders in !
si Sze and facilities in bedroom
Air conditioning outlet vent below bedroom window, otherwise the room was good.
Not a lot really, we were looking forward to staying here.
The whole experience, except for the breakfast. Until we actually found the place which was not where our Sat Nav said it was, in-fact we had to ask for directions at another pub in the village. This Inn has an AA 4 Star rating on the door at best it's 2 Star. We arrived later than expected after a long journey from the Isle of Wight on a Sunday evening at 21.15 to be told that we couldn't have an evening meal as they stopped serving at 9pm, although a few people where still eating at tables. We were showed our room which on first inspection was very cold and sparse with very little furniture. The room which was No3 had a double aspect with single glazed windows so the traffic passing outside could be heard quite easily. The Manager said if we didn't want to stop we would still be charged for the booking we also asked for a bath on our booking application through Booking.Com, but found the room only had a poor shower instead. The Manager said they had no more rooms available, but the car park was virtually empty when we pulled in. As we were tired we decided to stay and the Manager took our fee the same night in full. He (The Manager) also after a bit of pleading managed to get some sandwiches made for my Wife and I which he took payment for at the same time as we paid for the room. On returning to our room my Wife checked behind the bed and found it to be very dusty. The shower had signs of mould in the corners, and the Melamine Board holding the Shower controls was starting to deteriorate with the moisture as it gets continually soaked. The Chimney breast still required painting were they had moved the TV, and there was a massive damp patch at the top of the Chimney breast.which I reported to one of the staff the following morning. My Wife also found that the hair drier didn't work either. The saving grace to this Inn is its breakfast and to the staff who were on duty that morning. The breakfast was lovely and very well prepared.
I liked the friendliness of the staff, professional and efficient. The room was lovely and the bed comfortable. Food was good and reasonably priced. Would definitely recommend it to friends
Nothing I could put my finger on.
Being able to come down and eat in restaurant.
when left told by manager to just leave keys on desk, not asked if I had enjoyed my stay or everything had been Ok.
General attitude, poor service and uncomfortable surroundings.
Good location, plenty of space in the room, room at the back was quiet despite being on the A6.
We ate there three nights, food was variable, fish and chips were poor. Why? That's not difficult!
Just the bathroom needs updating, shower was very poor almost non existent. Great food though, plenty for breakfast and reasonable price for meals in the evening. Seems a popular place with the locals as well. Overall a great place to stay and would have no qualms about staying again as long as they get the showers sorted, we stayed there at the hottest days in July and needed to shower after a hard days walking in the dales.
Nice clean accommodation with friendly staff close to Matlock & Bakewell
It's roadside location makes sleeping in a bit difficult with traffic noise
limited wifi and tv channels.as a solo traveller these are more important as you spend more time in your room.also you are midway between buxton and bakewell so you have to drive if you want a paper or somewhere else to eat.
Location, facilities, parking
Cleanliness - very good in the room but downstairs although a very busy restaurant could be improved.
Great location for the Peak District; about 3 miles from Chatsworth and Bakewell and half a mile from Haddon Hall. Staff helpful and very friendly, plenty of parking, extensive menu.
Shower room very small and not well laid out. Bedroom not well laid out either - had to move the bedside table to be able to pull the chair out at the desk/dressing table. Duvet too heavy for the summer. For a place run by a brewery chain, very lacking in good cask beer.
coffe making facilities excellent Bathroom facilities good, cleanliness very good, bed was comfortable but on the small side for 2 outsize people
wall paper, furniture was a bit basic woodwork getting a bit tired
Nice room and reasonable restaurant. VERY hard to find from the directions. Not in Matlock but in Darley Dale.
The very steep stairs!!! Too much for older folk who aren't very mobile.
