Our room was clean and spacious and our bed was large and comfortable.Breakfast and evening meals were excellent. The staff were very helpful and friendly as were the locals and they made us feel very welcome. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would not hesitate to return in the future. This hotel is situated in an ideal position for visiting the Northern areas of the Lake District National Park as well as coastal areas. Our room was at the front and had good views of the hills beyond.
price, location and meals
very friendly helpful staff. good deals on meals in restaurant.
showers. prefer electric to mixer. became very hot and dangerous with change of pressure.
Good breakfast. Comfortable room for the time spent there.
Pillows were poor and flat, ned to be bigger or more of them.
The staff are really friendly and welcoming.
The location is a bit far and the sign was not very clear when we arrived at night.
Very smelly. Furniture falling apart. Kept waiting for 37 minutes by the cleaner who was serving breakfast because 'on a Sunday I wasn't supposed to wake up before 8am' even though all literature showed breakfast starting at 7am. When I questioned this the cleaner turned her back on me and ignored me.
Location, food, friendliness of staff
This Hotel was an old school so we slept in Classroon 1 - all the old signs remained ie Reception was at Girls Entrance etc - parked in the playground
I was an evacuee during the war and attended Cleator Council school until the end of the war. Our stay brought back many memories.

Very friendly staff, huge room, comfortable bed, huge portions in restaurant, beautiful view of Cumbrian hills from room, clean. Family up here so need a good, value location to stay. Will definately be back.
Showing it's age slightly but not enough to put us off. Missed wifi in the rooms and being Cumbria 3G was patchy. But picky points not deal breakers

the village near hotel.. Dead.all business closing due to supermarket opening near in Whitehaven.....
Very good service. Had everything I needed. Clean room. Lovely breakfast included. Good value for money. Nice location.
Very thin Pillows, and there were only two of them.
Rooms are huge. Lovely staff.
Breakfast. The quality of the sausage ruined the breakfast, therefore the whole morning.
The staff were really friendly Nice spacious twin room
Was hard to find. The hotel is on Main street, not Cleator Gate as stated on booking.com
Superb room Great location Friendly staff Excellent food / menu Value for money
Nothing to dislike
Location, the cleanliness of the hotel and the breakfast. Good value for money.
On a hot day the conservatory was far too warm when eating breakfast
Excellent staff. Food very good.
Location; interesting conversion of school to hotel; friendly staff; good choice of meals in restaurant; smaller portion option for senior citizens; value for money.
Decor was rather tired; artificial flowers even more weary!
Hard bed and pillows, noisy boiler, bathroom needs updating, mirror over toilet not sink, no plug in sink. No staff to greet you, no staff to book you out. Felt slightly unprofessional.
Quiet peaceful room for a good night's sleep, value for money tasty food with well varied menu, cheerful welcome and always helpful staff
Bed a little on the hard side!
Excellent hygiene, rooms very comfortable, staff very pleasant and friendly.
Reception unattended both on arrival and departure.
Nice large rooms that had been recently decorated, and in a quiet location so no outside or inside noises
Good location for the western Lake District. Large room, very comfortable. Good restaurant.
No place to put wet bathtowels--a common problem in UK hotels/B&Bs!
Plenty of room
Chair in room was not comfortable for anyone over 40
