Location. Helpful staff Comfy bed
lack of clothes storage in rooms. Only a few hangers. Minimal drawer space. Not suitable for more than a night or two.
Position for seeing historic old Edinburgh and also shopping and sightseeing in the New Town. Beautiful city.
My daughter and I stayed at the G & V for 5-days before she began studies at the University of Edinburgh. The location on the Royal Mile was within walking distance of shopping, old town historical attractions, fine dining and the University. (Although, we opted for a taxi on move-in day after spending several days shopping and with large suitcases in tow.) We were appreciative of the hotel staff, who greeted us warmly, were efficient with concierge requests and helpful with suggestions for locating specific shopping items and venues. The wait staff in the Missoni Bar were also professional and personable even during weekend evenings when business was brisk. Our room was tastefully decorated and beautifully maintained. We had a quiet interior room with a courtyard view that was charming and quaint. We did have to ask for instructions to access the free wi-fi, but once on, it was reliable and fast. We enjoyed the Nespresso machine, comfy robes and thought the television had a nice selection of stations and a few movie channels. We will certainly be back at the G & V on our next trip to Edinburgh.
Decor, cleanliness, staff, service etc
great staff, perfect location, smart hotel and some nice touches in the rooms
the rooms are tiny!
Stylish design and helpful staff.
Almost total absence of non-hanging storage space for clothes in bedroom. Generally a hotel in which substance does not match up to its stylish pretensions.
Standard room was Clean, friendly staff, lovely shower. Location perfect for the edinburgh tattoo.
Very expensive for a room only stay. It was festival season though.
Room Service Staff
Having to wait for 15 Mins for a drink after the gig was finished. Should have more staff serving drinks and make it residents only .
I had previously been to this hotel twice before during the festival when it was called The Mission. I had been impressed with the service, rooms, fact that I was able to get my laundry, mini bar as part of room rate. Toiletries and linen were also better quality. On leaving the manager did apologise and gave me his card for my next booking but just seems a shame that nothing was done whilst I was there.
This year the hotel has had a name change, I wasn't able to get the laundry, mini bar room rate. My room was not as clean as previously and whilst the staff are friendly the service was poor. I did mention this at reception however it was only picked up as I was leaving. Obviously I was glad that it was acknowledged but a bit late when we are leaving. It was my first anniversary with my partner and we were celebrating at the fringe -I did tell the hotel this on booking but didn't get any preferential treatment. I realise that they can't always do this but as a returning customer I did think they may have done. The service definitely has suffered and the staff at breakfast are struggling to cope. On both mornings we ordered our breakfast only to be forgotten and had to wait over 30minutes each time-staff were apologetic and said they had forgotten but to happen on both days is poor!
Lovely staff; comfortable beds; cool entrance/bar area; wonderful location (for the Festival and all local sights)
No notification about name change, resulting in confusion; exceedingly long wait each time we used reception; furnishings/fittings looking a bit tired now (I stayed there when it was brand new and fabulous); bathrooms not AT ALL soundproofed!
Easy access to all the festival action
I booked the then 'Missoni' for a 60th birthday and Christmas present for my husband along with Queen Anne Package and the Tattoo. I had not however been notified of the name change of the hotel and it was not until we were looking for the hotel that my husband commented " There it is the G&V" I was still looking for the Missoni name but my husband had gone online to check directions and had read that the name had changed. The hotel and staff were exemplary, the décor in true Missoni style was lavish, quirky and lovely. Staff were really courteous and pleasant and I was given some guidance on which cocktail to choose next. The bed was so comfy and I slept so well that I just wanted to lie there all day but we had a full agenda so the satisfying breakfast was most welcome and set us up for the sightseeing the day ahead. I hope that the hotel retains the Missoni touch because I think if it is changed too drastically it may not appeal to so many. I would certainly return to the G&V and I have already suggested it to friends considering a break in Edinburgh.
Friendly and helpful staff great location
no storage in room Couldn't get the coffee machine to work
Location right on the Royal Mile and a 10 min walk to the Edinburgh Castle. The decor and cool vibe of the hotel was a welcome change after a couple weeks of older historic hotels in other places around Scotland. The staff treated us very professionally and helped with directions and recommendations for restaurants and site seeing.
The Wi-Fi was very slow, especially the login process, and had to re-login each time the computer went to sleep, so that was very frustrating. Was not able to stream any video. Another issue was parking - the charge was excessively high and valet service was required as the lot was not accessible from inside the hotel. A final note - during Fringe festival this location is right in the middle of several music venues, and while this makes the location great for late nights, it also makes the hotel noisy if you want to get to bed early.
Hotel was in a super location, staff especially Mark on the door were incredibly helpful.
Drove around during a very busy festival period for an hour looking for the hotel, note that GPS also flags as Missoni and is further complicated by there being another perpendicular street below the bridge....very confusing ! Aspects of the decor starting to look tired, the styling is obviously Missoni, G and V need to find its own identity. Car parking a challenge at busy times.
We stayed here for 6 nights in July. The G&V is probably the most relaxed and friendly hotel we have ever stayed at. All staff from the geezers at the door to housekeeping were extremely nice and helpful and all made a good impression. We had a superior double room which had great views down Castle Terrace. Floor to ceiling glazing made the room feel light and spacious. The room had free and perfectly working wifi, complimentary mineral water and a very nice bathroom. The bed was comfortable, pillows were the best and although the room was facing the street and a pub just outside, the sound proofing was good so we were not disturbed. The room was very clean and well decorated. Breakfast was good and included in the room rate. I would definitely stay here again if I ever come back to Edinburgh.
Minor point; the coffee at breakfast time was too weak, it needs to be a little stronger.
Well located for the Castle, the Royal Mile and many other tourist visits. Highly recommended. The whiskey. The kilts!
Nothing to dislike here.
The whole experience , that's why we come back.
Coffee machine in the rooms. To complicated. To much of a do when making a coffee Maybe a residence only lounge bar?
The hotel, the staff, the location.
No pool/sauna on site
Truly enjoyable stay steps from the Royal Mile, just enough to stay out of the hubbub. The doormen know how to rock a kilt. A great location for walking all over Edinburgh.
