Very disappointing. Rooms are in desperate need of refurbishment, very worn with broken features & fittings.
if there is a function on noise can be annoying on first floor rooms
good choice and well prepared menu, comfy bed
the lights in the room didn't turn on when you entered. bedside lamps only. Shower hard to set. hot tap on wash basin stuttered. music from the restaurant and the
The food was excellent and really good value for money. Well cooked and presented and plenty of it. Excellent breakfast with plenty of choice and generous portions, freshly cooked and piping hot as was all the food. If only the rest of the hotel lived up to the standard of its food!!
Overall the hotel was, putting it politely, tired but the most disappointing aspect was the general cleanliness of the hotel. We asked to be moved from the first room allocated due to the overall condition and cleanliness of the room with the second being barely acceptable and far from perfect. Booked for three nights but left after two. The atmosphere of the public rooms was like a doctor's waiting room. Poor ambience.
Friendly staff, excellent breakfast (quantity, quality and service).
In room television had a mind of its own and became unusable. No hot water or heating on Sunday pm, had to ask for it to be turned on!
Very friendly staff. Big comfortable room and bed. Excellent cooked breakfast. Plenty of parking.
Shower didn't work at all and couldn't be fixed. Our room seemed to be badly insulated from noise above and below but that may not be typical. We were above the kitchens.
It would be an idea to have hyper allergenic pillar and duvet. But was ok
Very friendly and helpful staff. We had a lovely stay.
It was very clean.
Staff were not overly friendly. Although it said free wifi there was none in your room. I asked for conditioner for my hair as it was not provided only shampoo and shower gel and I did not get a friendly reception from staff. Food was not that great either.
Breakfast good but very slow service - however apologised and explained they had a new chef.
Bathroom particularly bad - tiny, very old shower, cracked sink and floor collapsing!
The place has a real old world charm, Staff are super friendly Food was good rooms have real old character charm
the showers are terrible in every room I have stayed in. the bed was not the best
the friendliness of the staff and the food Excellent place to stay would highly recommend
Quiet location, good food, hospitable.
Thin bedroom partitions didn't block out noisy conversation from neighbours bedroom. Not much to do locally without using car.
The restaurant was excellent, good menu at realistic prices, very good service, excellent food quality and very well prepared and presented.
Very poor tv reception, almost non existent Wi-Fi. Inadequate wardrobe and drawer space. No lift, stairs up to room and down in room.
We enjoyed the meals and in particular the friendliness of the staff. Thought the rooms downstairs were very nice, the restaurant, and bar.
The wi-fi didn't work in the bedroom but that didn't bother us very much. It might be a problem for some.
Food was good but waiting staff could do with a bit more finesse.
Filthy bathroom, uncleaned from previous occupants as was extra blanked, just scrunched in pile. Despite complaint still uncleaned, and toiletries not refreshed. Plastic spoons and budget paper napkins, broken teapots and dirty plates. Won't be staying again.
a really nice bloke night porter athink called wilf coudnt do enough
the tavern prices, and woman serving breakfast looked like she hated her job and coudnt pretend a smile,,
Friendly and welcoming staff Excellent food - both breakfast and dinner
We couldn't get wifi in the bedroom. That was the only negative comment I have
We had a meal from the Bistro menu which was delicious and great value for money.
The room wasn't what we expected from the website. Bed was two twins pushed together with no mattress protector so quite uncomfortable gap down the middle! There was a used bar of soap in the shower which we made housekeeping aware of but they still failed to clean it up when putting fresh towels etc in which was quite disappointing. Little things like that and a cigarette burn on the chair in the room let it down as beautiful setting!
Overall it was a nice experience! The hotel was beautiful with lots of character and food was good.
Two main points - the bar and restaurant were very quiet, it needed some music to help create an atmosphere. Secondly there is only wifi in the bar (which I knew about from the booking.com info, but this really needs to be extended to the bedrooms.
Staff were extremely pleasant and sympathetic. Breakfast was good. Pleasant setting.
Hotel felt 'tired', eating area had peeling wall paper etc. Double room was small and the bed uncomfortable...ridge down the middle...Directly over disco...eventually quietened down at midnight...woken by next doors television and shower! paper walls?!
NOTHING< except leaving.
Dirty, mould in bathroom, room, bed so bad could not sleep, and more.............
The staff were nice and helpful and did the best they could with very limited resources. The breakfast was good and freshly cooked, and the coffee was nice and strong.
The fabric of the hotel is very poor. Sometimes hotels get to the point where you could describe them as "tired" or "in need of refurbishment" this hotel has gone beyond that. Our bedroom was clean but was in a poor state. Chunks missing from doors, cracked window panes, very worn furnishings etc. The public areas were the same. As a cheap place to stay on a short visit to Durham, just about ok. But to advertise this as a wedding venue is frankly wrong.
Breakfast excellent, and JANET who was the only staff member on duty sunday morning, and considering did a fine job. First inpressions are good in the reception area. unfortunately the main restaurant was occupied by a wedding party, we had to eat in the neighbouring bar area, which has no atmosphere, and smokers at the outer door left open.
Access road has still horrendous holes on approach (Visited June 2014) We were placed in the roof space, very small room, with a window frame that had seen better days. Shower would have benefitted from a good clean, very mouldy. Downstairs, main male toilet in very poor repair.
Dirty room and filthy shower.
