Built in 1843, The Old Courthouse is one of the oldest and most charming buildings in Bowness-on-Windermere. Just minutes from Bowness Bay, the hotel offers colorful rooms with private bathrooms.

Besides location, we liked the bed and the evening meal best.
Nobody at reception when we arrived, and the noisy bathroom door.
Location is awesome. No car noises the only thing you hear is water and birds. Bautiful location. Not so great if you dont have a car though as the hotel around 6 miles away from any residences. In the morning you feel you are on the tip of mountains as the only thing you see is mountains and water. Rooms are good. Staff is excellent and very friendly and helpful. Poeple who are looking for a quiet away from world break should visit. Will visit again with my wife.
No phone network atleast 3 network but its a good thing if you want to really relax. Wifi is okay but you dont go there to use wifi or to go on social media, this you can do it from your home.
I found the hotel was very clean and the staff were very friendly
For the amount i paid for just 1night, i found the rooms were very small and the bathroom was small too. Also, there was no tv in the room which was poor considering the price paid. Also the area was very boring with very little to do, and had to travel everywhere. Would not recommend.
Outstanding location Superb food Friendly and attentive but not intrusive staff A real home from home feel.
Nothing enough to comment on
The food. Breakfast and dinner were delicious. Afternoon tea good value for money. The location with beautiful views over the lake. The terrace and gardens were relaxing to sit in to enjoy the afternoon and evening sun. Some beautiful walks close by. The chamber maid service was excellent, The bathroom was kept gleaming. We had fresh towels every day and clean bedlinen after two days even know we were only staying three nights.
The bed was not very comfortable the mattress felt rather bumpy. There was only a bedside light on one side of the bed.
Stunning location, original art deco furnishings and decor, helpful and friendly staff, red squirrels and birds in garden
Small, awkwardly shaped room with small, sideways on 'lake view'.
Restaurant was good and not too expensive. Beds comfortable. Quiet night. Morning staff were helpful and competent. Red squirrels were an unexpected treat. The house had a sort of quirky charm.
Room (Lad Crag) had a persistent smell - old cigarette smoke I thought but could be something else. Evening staff couldn't get an alternative room made up for us and offered an air freshener which wasn't a complete solution. Checkout staff gave a satisfactory discount. Would probably stay again but would be choosy about the room and would try to arrive a bit earlier.
Lovely refurbished room
1 Poor staff member on reception on arrival
I absolutely LOVED this place! We stayed at this hotel for 3 days and it really wasn't enough. I could stay for weeks! It was heaven. The hotel exterior is stunning in itself, but the location is to die for. Firstly we booked the standard room, I rang the man just to confirm and he was absolutely amazing, upgraded us to deluxe for no reason and was really sweet and kind. The suite was gorgeous, the sleigh bed was big and the decor was tasteful and homely. The bathroom had a big whirlpool bath and a massive shower head. It was bliss! It was extremely clean and had everything you would want. Lovely modern tv, kettle, cups, glasses, paper etc etc nothing was overlooked. Even gave us tasty biscuits which I thought as a lovely touch. The only slight problem I had was the bed was slightly hard and uncomfortable and the pillows are slightly hard, but that is only a slight problem, mainly due to my sciatica. The breakfast was gorgeous, especially the scrambled egg. The waiters and waitresses were so helpful and kind, they would go out of their way to ensure you had everything you wanted and was happy. All smiles and hello's from the moment we walked in. In fact all the staff at the hotel was the same. If they passed you they would greet you and the level of customer service in this place is second to none. Even the guest that were also staying there were kind and cheerful. Always greeting you and very plesant. I had just come back from an absolutely disasterous holiday in Greece with very arrogant people and a horrible hotel, I came here and it restored by faith in people again. Everyone was so friendly and helpful. The hotel was clean, modern with its amenties whilst still keeping it's character. It an art decor 1950s (??) hotel, which may not be to everyones taste but I found it quirky and characterful. It was an older look but had a modern twist, had all you would need to make it comfortable but made you feel at home.
The welcome was warm. The food lovely and it was s very pleasant place to be. We will be back asap!""!
Cannot think of anything. It was great
The location is just fabulous, so quiet and peaceful. The views from the hotel are stunning. Good food and service from friendly staff. Red squirrels in the garden
Excellent location for a peaceful break with stunning scenery and excellent bird and wild life watching, especially the \red sqirrells
Location and views, red squirrels.
Signage says it is a "gastropub" - it isn't!
Nothing, would not recommend this Hotel to my worst enemy
Food, price, staff ... got food poisoning, could not even sit down in the room, facilities basic and poor.
The location - though remote is ideal for getting away from the stresses of modern life & no vodaphone signal = bonus :-)
Being 'upgrded' without consent or prior knowledge from a double with a view of the lake to a twin without but with more space & no view was less than desirable. A shame because this spoilled a birthday break to the extent that we may not return.
Fantastic location, and views from bedroom and restaurant were very special. Food and ambience in restaurant good.
Fire doors at top of stairs were so strongly hinged they were difficult to get through. Need attention.
The staff were friendly. The food was excellent and the wild life was brilliant. Spend a lot of time watching the squirrels and the birds. Will certainly go back.
There was nothing to dislike.
Beautiful and quiet location. Red squirrels on the law,
We loved the location, however were completely let down by the quality of our room. We were allocated the "Lakeside" room, which had a lovely side view over the lake, however that was the only positive aspect. The room was dirty, with cobwebs everywhere, and wallpaper literally peeling off the walls. I moved one of the bedside cabinets looking for a plug socket, only to find old biscuit wrappers, dust and crumbs. There was an eaves cupboard at the side of the bed, when I opened this there were filthy old boxes, and even a tin of Ronseal wood stain stored there. The bed itself was clean, but the rest of the room certainly wasn't. When we spoke to a member of staff we were advised that the "Lakeside" was a standard room! I can only surmise that this room is not used often, perhaps only when the Hotel is full? The restaurant was advertised as "Gourmet" a better word would be "average" certainly nothing special. It would seem that the kitchen could only cope with 3 services per half hour, and you had to book your slot! Limited drinks in the bar, and whilst not rude the staff only did the basics. This hotel has an excellent position, and could certainly be something special, unfortunately at the moment we would not return, nor recommend to any family or friends.
The staff were very friendly. They were very down to earth and eager to help. The food was very good.
Lovely faded Art Deco interior, oldskool charm, red squirrels on the terrace. Friendly staff, very peaceful location. Comfy bed, good food.
We had been double booked which meant we swapped a lake view for a nice bathroom apparently, oh and a nice tv, it was a special occasion and I didn't appreciate the fact that they made this mistake.
Love the rural setting. Excellent room facilities. Food very well presented and cooked. Most friendly staff. Fantastic bargain price.
The peace and quiet of the hotel and surrounding area. Good food esp breakfast!!
Peeling wall paper in the room. The cost of staying here didn't match the expected quality of the room
Remote location, quirky decor, friendly staff.
