The whole experience was great from on-line booking to departure.
Difficult to crioticise, but perhaps better illuminated directions for guests arriving after dark.
Location is stunning. Steven the concierge is a huge asset to the hotel, very welcoming and gave us a tour and history lesson about the castle.
Bed was a bit uncomfortable.
Far out in the country. Lovely historic building with many old features. Great onsite restaurant.
Had to drag luggage upstairs. Found out later that there was a luggage service but reception never mentioned or offered it.
Had booked 2 standards for 2 nights and was surprised to be upgraded to a very large Tower Room. Staff was excellent and enjoyed our tour of the property.
The castle and grounds were lovely. Once I informed them that my in laws would not be able to climb the stairs for thier entire stay they moved them to a ground floor room, the Sunflower which was beautifully decorated. The breaksfast was delicious. I was also happy to be given a choice of a new room once I expressed how unhappy I was with the room that they gave us. The bath tub was nice and luxurious and the Jasmine room had a four poster bed that made me feel like a princess.
I did not like the room Hibiscus that we were put in at first and were told it was one of the best rooms in the hotel. The decor was dark and the couch in the sitting room looked worn and ancient. I had planned our two day stay at this venue far in advance and had requested a specific room and was told it was available to us at the time of booking. We were double billed for our stay and it was a tedious process trying to get a refund. I had chosen rooms that appeared on the website to be on the ground floor due to my in laws mobility issues, when we arrived there is no lift for the suitcases and several stairs to get to our rooms.
Lovely grounds, interesting history, arrival staff were excellent
Had thought we were staying in the castle - whole point of visit. Found out we were staying in normal accommodation when we arrived. This needs to be a lot clearer. Wedding was in progress and this meant we couldn't wander in a lot of places. Wedding guests were noisy late into the night. Breakfast staff were absolutely atrocious and this coloured our whole visit. We couldn't wait to leave.
Room, bed, location
Shower controls. Needed to go outside to reach Reception and Restaurant - not nice when raining. Poor signposting of reception from road - we got lost and had to phone for directions.
Setting was beautiful, the staff were friendly and professional. We had dinner in the vavasour restaurant and it was fabulous
Rooms were very warm
Beautiful location & setting
Lovely setting, plenty to explore. Most of the staff were helpful. I enjoyed the history of the place. You can take your dog.
There were issues with service at breakfast both mornings. Not all staff were helpful.
Beautiful historic property Wonderful spacious en-suite bedroom Made to feel welcome
The evening receptionist was excellent and very helpful when we had to move room due to a faulty and noisy fan.
Breakfast staff were very poor. Never asked what eggs wanted despite options on menu. Had to explain 3 times what we wanted. How hard does porridge, haddock and a cooked breakfast become! Never got the morning paper, along with other guests who complained. No explanation. No net curtain in bathroom despite looking over an active working farm yard.
On the plus side nice friendly The Staff
Small room (original offered) went to change the room for as new one which was larger than the first but required a makeover I no it’s picky but low grade toilet paper as well!! Food :- Soggy limp Chips with a Chicken Caesar salad made from Limp Salad leafs with a quarter of Chicken cut in half and dump on top, little if any though gone into it. Breakfast was also let-down, Bacon that had seen the day before, so left it on the side, that said the Scramble egg was freshly made with good substance and taste! will not be going back .
Beautiful location and building
Rude staff, especially on reception spoilt the visit. As a young couple in our mid 20's they really looked down on us.
The food was expensive and not particularly tasty. £15 for a beefburger and chips, the chips where of the chunky variety and where hard in the middle. The breakfast was disgusting considering it cost £10.95 each, I've had nicer from a greasy spoon cafe for half the price. As for sleeping, the bed sheets and cushions where covered in stains of an unknown origin, hopefully not bodily fluids. There was also a really annoying noise that sounded like a loud refrigerator stopping and starting coming from outside that went on all night. On checking out the receptionist asked if I was going to the Leeds festival I replied 'No, we are in York to visit friends' she so oh it is just that you look 'the type'. I'm not sure what she meant by that, I'm assuming it is because the reception was full of people attending a wedding and they where in suits and I wasn't.
The whole experience
Proximity to motorway
There had clearly been a previous guest that smoked in bedroom.
An overnight stay. Room comfortable with a small annex making it more like a suite. Four poster bed! Excellent dinner and breakfast. Would have liked to have stayed longer.
Difficult to access but stunning when approached..
The room we were offered was really small but we took it anyway. Next day we returned to find unmade beds and no room cleaning had taken place.Breakfast had been so poor the previous morning that we decided not to eat there again and checked out. Duty Mgr. met us on way out and apologised and offered a 50% reduction should we decide to stay again. Would have been more impressed had the reduction been offered on the stay we had there. It is a pity as he seemed like a genuine man and the castle is stunning.
Location and grounds. Quality of the food and service at the evening meal was excellent. Good to have the very good Vavasour wines on the wine list at reasonable prices.
Very small room. Breakfast was like being in a zoo with an outgoing wedding and an incoming wedding. For such a magnificent place the facilities for non-wedding guests are poor with both the restaurant and the bar in basements with no windows. The rooms and bars that obviously have sweeping country views are reserved for the weddings. So definitely not a place for quiet relaxation. The room rate seemed to match the description of the hotel but the reality is very different. Way overpriced versus the offering.
Peaceful location Nice ambience
Dining options not close
Architecture & history of the hotel Set in attractive grounds Very comfortable beds Good size room and bathroom Peaceful surroundings
Hairdryer was missing from my room and staff couldn't find one for me to use. Wifi wasn't great in the room, but this is understandable, considering it's an old castle with very thick walls.
A gentleman gave us a tour and quite a lot of historical background. The building and grounds were fun to explore.
I never quite understood the bar/restaurant set up. Also there was no place to have an inexpensive meal. If we ate at the hotel every night - we'd be broke! :)
Excellent location very pleasent staff amazing resteraunt & exceptional value will definitely stay again.
Location & grounds were phenomenal.
Long wait whilst checking out, room was disappointing, small & terrible mould on the bathroom grouting in the Dandelion suite. Very disappointing for the price I paid. Also whilst checking out the receptionists were too busy talking about shopping. They took my card payment & didn't even say thank you or goodbye. We expected more.
