Good value for money Hotel with pleasant helpful staff. Good location just 20 minutes or so from Newcastle city centre.
Some of the fittings etc getting a little tired. But suspect that there is already a plan in place to rectify this .
Friendly helpful staff.
Bathroom was in need of refurbishment.
The staff were very helpful, and went out of there way to help
Large room, pleasant ambience
The room was very warm
customer care 100 percent Efficient service Good breakfast and very clean accommodation
Great place to stay for visiting Houghton-le-Spring, Durham and the Beamish Museum.
Price and value for money, rooms tidy and basic, beds comfortable.
It was hard to spot from the road because I was looking for the image in the picture which faces the motorway, not the street.
Friendly bar Good breakfast Comfy beds Plenty of parking
Poor/Intermittent TV reception on BBC channels
I needed a base for a few days and the hotel served its purpose very well
we enjoyed all our stay, staff friendly nothing too much trouble, meal in the bar was very very enjoyable. will be staying again next time in Durham
Friendly helpful staff Lovely Room Fantastic Thai Meal in evening Nicely located for Durham and Sunderland
Breakfast disappointing by comparison to rest of service.
The hotel was clean and reasonably priced. Staff were helpful. Location very good. Will certainly return.
Friendly staff, great breakfast and terrific restaurant, great value
wifi was a little temperamental at first.
All you need for a nights stay on business. Clean, comfortable, with Thai influence in modern decor. Thai restaurant a definite bonus.

Breakfast and breakfast staff
Nobody at check in and smell of Thai food
We stayed at the Highfield (again) on route to the cruise terminal at Newcastle, travelling from Blackpool. We reserved a superior room with a balcony with views over the hills towards Beamish. The room had been newly re-decorated with a Thai theme and we had a very comfortable night. Our meal in the 'Star of Siam' Thai restaurant (which is the Hotel restaurant) was absolutely fabulous. We chose the king prawns in orange sauce and pork in oyster sauce. When we next look to stay in the Durham/Newcastle area the Highfield will be our first choice. The staff treat us like old friends.
Rooms have just been updated Great Thai restaurant
Breakfast closes at 8:45
Having read the reviews, I asked for a high floor, quiet room and that's what I got. As a single traveller, the added bonus was a huge room with a king sized bed. The room was clean but could to with a bit of tlc. The bathroom was also clean but in need of refurbishment. I was very satisfied with the accommodation. I didn't have breakfast because, if pre-booked, it was very expensive. There is a Thai restaurant and bar/grill and I had meals in both. The staff and food were excellent. The homemade soup in the bar was one of the best I have ever had. I stayed here to see some cricket at Chester-le-Street and the hotel was ideally placed for this but a bit isolated from other amenities. I will definitely stay here again.
Being a bit picky, the bathroom could do with a shelf over the sink. There was nowhere to put anything. I think many would find the bed too hard but it was ok for me.
The location was good for a wedding we were going to, our room had just been refurbished and it was lovely but after that
The noise of the traffic, we did not have a good nights sleep as the room was so hot (no air conditioning) you could not leave the patio doors open on to the balcony for the noise, it was stated as a buffet breakfast but this was not the case we had to stand in line and wait to be served (meagre portions) no fried eggs just scrambled which was cold, the toast was like a crisp it was so thin (poor quality bread) only one slice each but you could request more, poor tea ( it was in a vacuum pot and cold) it dosent take much to make a pot of fresh tea when you arrive at your table the coffee was vey weak and not very hot all in all a poor breakfast
The staff couldn't do enough for us & were really friendly & polite.
Even though our room was 2 floors above the Thai restaurant the smell of cooking fats & oils was awful. Also it was meant to have free wi-fi but we couldn't get it in our room even though the router was outside the door.
we liked that the staff were friendly and helpful, when they were around.
we didn't like lots of things about the hotel, the place needs money spending on it, and several things in our "luxury" double room fell way below healthy standards. We cut our visit short, but the manager contacted us and re-imbursed us for the second night, and the awful breakfast.
Bar staff friendly
Unable to cancel free of charge
staff and accommodation were fantastic, Food was exceptional and will definitely return.
unfortunately we had no wifi for the first three days
Could do with modernising.
