Neighborhood info

Highland Park House is on the very edge of Kirkwall and it takes about 20 minutes to walk to the centre comfortably, but less than five by car. Once in the centre you will find the cathederal, plenty of shops, eating places and museums. Very close by we have the Highland Park Distillery and vistor centre which attracts tourists from all around the world and there is also a nearby hotel with an excellent restaurant. From the house it is easy to walk into the open fields and farmland behind. there are several tracks to explore and these can offer spectacular views. Scapa beach, a sheltered sandy bay, is about a mile away. From Highland Park House, Skara Brae prehistoric village is about 35 minutes drive, and Stromness about 30 minutes. Many other attractions and historic sites are closer. We are also within 30 minutes drive of all of the main ferry terminals and less than ten minutes from the airport. Orkney is an incredibly safe place. It is virtually crime free and many of the locals don't worry about locking cars or even their front doors. It is absolutely safe to explore or walk about at any time of day or night. Speaking of the evenings, in the Summer months, it stays light very late - particularly in June and July, evening trips out to look at the scenery and the long sunsets are highly recommended. If we are honest, days are short in the Winter months and the weather is often "entertaining" but you could also be rewarded with a sight of the Northern Lights.
