This is a special bed and breakfast! Welcoming hosts. Excellent breakfast, really comfortable bed. Set back on the hillside, facing south and the sun. Lovely hill scenery. Fantastic for stargazing in the night sky, best in the UK? Stayed in mid February, so we phoned ahead to check snow on the track was not a problem. It has recently been converted inside with all new bathrooms. It has low beams upstairs, etc, and it is away from it all. We loved it.
Comfortable bed, quiet location, good breakfast, good hosts.
Bedrooms are in roof space so sloping ceilings and beams can catch you out. Carpets in bedrooms would be nice.
Stunning location, good breakfast.
The lethal shoulder height roof truss going straight through the bedroom (between the bed & the ensuite!) & loads of low headroom traps. The landlord sleeps in between the 2 guest rooms which wasn't apparent until he went upstairs & could look into the guest rm!
Staff and breakfast.
Very steep hill and too far to walk to local town.
Very welcoming,good breakfast,comfy room,great location,
had to go home
Location: wilderness! Views. Stylish. Good facilities. Comfortable. Cosy log-burning stove. A warm welcome and attentive host.
Fantastic location, good breakfast and very welcoming.
We were lucky with the weather, and enjoyed our trip to weardale. We lived there for ten years and made many friends, and it was good to see them again. Phil was very attentive and nothing was too much trouble
I don't think Phil realises just how savage winter can be. He will be cut off for weeks on end if he suffers a bad winter as things stand at the moment. It would have been good to see a bit more of his wife, she offered a lot of behind the scenes support
Phil and Clare are very friendly and helpful with good local advice on places to eat and visit. The house is on a wild looking hill with an interesting drive up. We saw plenty of rabbits and a couple of owls close by. The bed was very comfortable and the duvet warm and snuggly. A good English breakfast was included. If I were travelling that way I would be happy to stay there again.
Not really "didn't like" just a few warnings. It is a remote location and has to be self sufficient. No mains water or mains electricity so a diesel generator and wind turbine provide all the power needed. Water comes from a local spring and is surprisingly brown due to the peaty ground. A filter system clears it for drinking and for the less intrepid Phil supplies bottled water!
Friendly helpfulness of host(s). Unique barn accommodation experience. Great cooked breakfast. Serenity and solitude of remote location.
The tannin stained water on tap took some getting used to, but hosts provided ample fresh bottled spring water.
Fantastic place Phil the owner catered for any needs. the scenery especially in our case the night skies are outstanding
Although it was not that close to anywhere big it was easy to find and the most wonderful views. Being equidistant from both coasts means that there is much to both see and do but as we were only there a short time, 3 nights, we just stayed close to Hill Top; there is a good chance we will go back to the area to see some of what we missed.
Very friendly host location was amazing with amazing views and very peaceful and relaxing atmosphere Rooms very spacious and comfortable and breakfast was great would recommend to anyone to pay a visit look forward to visiting again very soon.
Owners very friendly, a great place for totally getting away from it all!
This was a work trip so didn't have time to sit and admire the view!
Stunning views Eco friendly accommodation with wind power electric and natural spring water. Superb accommodation, in a very quiet remote setting Great get away from the hustle and bustle of town/city life Lovely hosts who looked after our every need. Despite water shortage from natural stream, hosts made every effort to make our stay as comfortable as possible. Choice of breakfast menus - a treat from the usual at home!! Recommended places to go and places to eat with visiting places literature available.
Nothing really to not like about our stay other than the inconvenience of not being able to shower, but we were told about this problem before we went, we chose to still go and it didn't really bother us, given the circumstances.
No running water to have a shower, as water from stream had ran dry, back up was to boil bottled water to have a wash. Also low beams across and along the length of the room left no head space and you needed to hunch over to walk around parts of the room
The host is someone with whom we shared many values and interests, and so our interaction with him was the highlight of our stay. His knowledge of the area was most helpful. We liked the high altitude and somewhat remote location of this place.
It's not that we didn't like anything, quite the contrary, but we would suggest that because some of the room ceilings are the underside of slanted roofs, a tall person will not be comfortable in those rooms. Mind your head!
the views were amazing the hosts were very friendly the room was very clean
Good location, good service, helpful staff.
Continual rain!!! Maybe a little more choices at breakfast, but a very minor point.
Lovley couple great hosts, great breakfast and the rooms were very clean and comfortable
Nothing to dislike
Dramatic views. Excellent recommendations for scenary and walks. Friendly hosts.
Amazing location and a true off grid experience. The couple who run this place will go out of their way to make your stay an enjoyable one ........ ;0)
It would seem that whatever could go wrong did go wrong in the run up to and during my stay. For me this just added to the experience although my hosts may not agree. I still could not fault the place, what you see is what you get. A loverly place run by two loverly people
Excellent remote location with good views of the surrounding countryside/moorland and close to Killhope Museum/Alston. Very restful. The availability of a lounge was a bonus. The owners were very hospitable.
Need to check if guests are vegetarian we forgot to mention and weren't prompted.
