Dating back to the 16th century, The Salty Monk is set in a beautiful area of Devon. Its restaurant has been awarded 2 AA Rosettes, and there is a mini spa with a hot tub and sauna.
Score from 48 reviews Excellent 8.9/10
Huge family room and bathroom, lovely breakfast, great spa facilties and staff who were very helpful at all times.
Pool and hot tub
Not informed before arrival bar and restaurant wild not be open ! Very small double bed for such a large room . Very lacking in atmosphere. A b&b not a hotel !
Beautiful views, flexible staff and good position for coastal resorts.
A little difficult to access from the busy road during heavy traffic flows - only at peak times.
Sometimes I find travelling on my own difficult, but certainly not here, I was made to feel so very welcome and relaxed, nothing was too much trouble and the owners made me feel part of their family, it was like being at home. The nightly rates here are very competively priced when comapred to other Sidmouth Hotels, and it includes free use of the Spa. Many thanks Wim.
Location , Food ( but presentation needs to be looked at ).
Hand wash in Bathroom not working, Having to ring a number to gain entry. Lack of bin by tea/coffee making, had to bring bin from Bathroom or take items to bathroom, nice as the young waitress was at Breakfast ,the top she had on was dirty and paint? stained. These things may appear small but do add to an enjoyable stay.
Spacious nicely decorated family room, nice views, good breakfast and nice spa area with pool and jacuzzi. I enjoyed a good spa treatment.
It is on quite a busy road.
Good Service, Clean, Lovely Room, Excellent Hosts, Outside Hot Tub, Superb Value.
Adequate for 1 night until cottage available.
Breakfast not included & each item priced individually.
Room sizes, friendly staff Young staff trying to hold things together
Road noise Manager not present Include continental breakfast Customers complaining about double booked rooms, misunderstanding of meal plan on booking
The room was very spacious for all 5 of us. The kids enjoyed the swim spa The breakfast was nice (slightly expensive)
That there was no evening chef for the week. We was not told this prior to booking and have 3 young children 5,3 & 2. So had to travel out of an evening to find somewhere to eat. There was thick duvets on the bed in summer, would have preferred a sheet to cover myself
be aware if part of the reason you book is to spend balmy summer nights enjoying the view from the hot tub they rent out the decking area for private parties and you may not be allowed to use it.
Its a beautifull bed and breakfast with a very nice landlord, you feel welcome, large clean and stylish family room, with a large bathroom. A outside hot tub on a large terrace with a great view. Spa-facilities available.
Awaited a 4* hotel, but its no hotel. Its a 4* B&B . Far outside of Sidmouth, away from the sea. On the mainroad from Exeter to Sidford/Sidmouth
Friendly staff - although only ever saw 2 people during the whole weekend! Single room comfortable with good storage although v small shower room. Nice breakfast although strange to be offered the choice of cereal OR cooked breakfast, would usually expect both
Noisy building, you can hear doors slamming. Set on busy road so road noise despite being at the back of the building. Strange feel to the place, never met the owners/managers, just a couple of young girls checking you in and taking breakfast order and only saw 2 other guests despite the place being full!
Great breakfast, good spar facilities. Friendly welcome, clean and comfortable accommodation.
Traffic noise was distracting for rooms at the front of the hotel.
Hot tub and spa facilities
No evening meal facilities
excellent breakfast.great room very clean and tidy
couldnt stay another nite
Brill to have a hot tub Clean and tidy People were lovely Breakfast was great Well equipped for children with nice high chairs and the odd toy in the garden.
Room was tiny with no room even for a wardrobe. We had to pay extra (£17) for breakfast so the room worked out VERY expensive. The hot tub had been hired out privately so was unable to use until after 8:30pm (no good when you have a 1yr old). But it was nice for the owner to say we could use it after closing time.
We have just spent one night at this Hotel so we have had no use of the spa facilities and we are also unable to comment on the breakfast as we left without eating. This might sound strange, but we had spent the whole night with virtually no sleep! Unbeknown to us when we booked, we found the hotel to be situated on the main Sidmouth to Exeter Road and even on a Saturday/Sunday morning we were surprised to hear so many cars, plus drive by at such a speed that it was impossible to get a good nights sleep. It would be an ideal place for a speed camera as many cars would be caught! Rural Devon does not come to mind when we think of our stay here. The hotel is in need of some general maintenance inside and out. For instance the door used by guests is badly in need of re varnishing and part of the cat flap is broken. The flat roof which was on view from our bathroom window, has roof tiles just strewn around where we assume the Velux window had been added and paint work is scruffy in some of the public areas. We also saw internal areas where water had leaked through the roof making brown stains (our bedroom included) and peeling paint. So shabby comes to mind but not chic. To mention a couple of good points, our bedroom did have good views across the countryside and was a good size. However, the bathroom although long, was very narrow, with eaves taking up a large part of the walking area to the actual bath/shower making it impossible for us to walk upright and these eaves also made it very difficult for a man to use the toilet, without having to tilt the top half of their body to the left. The bedding could certainly be better, all done on the cheap! the pillows were so flat the neck wasn't supported and a bed sheet under the quilt cover would have been useful as the quilt was too thick for summer time use and so therefore making it too hot.
the room and facilities
the constant traffic noise 24/7 as we live in a very quiet area and are not used to the constant background sound
Traffic noise from road No one there to welcome us Spa facilities were outside and not a available unless you contacted owners
A splendid intimate countryside hotel with courteous service. We stayed in a double room, with very large ensuite, with both bath and shower. Plenty of room, the room also had a sofa. Room and food/bar prices were excellent value, and were of a very good standard. This hotel is perfect for anyone who is interested in nature, I found it lovely to watch the horses in the fields and saw much wildlife in a short walk in the neighbouring woods. The owners were very welcoming and all staff reflected the family atmosphere that this hotel offers. Excellent.
I stayed with my sister in a twin room on this visit, I have stayed before, and as before the room and hotel was clean bright and cheery. The service here is so warm and friendly, the owners have a wealth of local knowledge for places to go and see. Good food and not expensive. Room rates here are very good value as it includes use of the Spa facilities. I will be back soon with my husband.
Pleasant surrounding with a warm welcome and excellent home cooked dinner and breakfast. Good value for money.
Loved it all especially hearing owners animals around amazing hostess most accommodating will go again and bring dogs
Another lovely stay at this Hotel, booked for 1 night, but stayed for 2 more! This hotel is so chilled, a real place to step back and chill. Lovely friendly and efficient service from the owners and their staff. If you enjoy the countryside and watching animals you will love it there. The rooms are well decorated, clean and well equiped, comfy too. If you like mass market hotels, this hotel is not for you, if you like personal service, in an interesting hotel you will.
