Centrally situated in the quaint town of Castle Cary, The George Hotel is a friendly, family-run 15th-century building, providing an ideal base from which to explore South Somerset.

This hotel offers rooms with private bathrooms with a large LCD TV, double-size showers and free Wi-Fi. It is just over a quarter mile from the A303, just outside the racing town of Wincanton.

Score from 274 reviews Excellent
The Wincanton suite was very pleasant with views of the garden and surrounding countryside.
Room poor condition wallpaper hanging off in bedroom and bathroom. Very tired
The location and communal areas of the building were beautiful. The staff were very welcoming and polite. The breakfast was excellent with a great choice!
Although the room was large, it needed an overhaul decor wise. It could still be kept in style with the building but in a more modern style. Everything seemed just a little bit tired. The king size bed looked great, but the mattress consisted of 2 mattresses put together.
Staff were exceptionally friendly and the hotel did cater well for our dog. The food and service in the restaurant were excellent, so this coupled with a value for money feeling and the general warm ambience of the hotel and surrounding grounds made this stay quite magnificent. Spa treatments were also good and relatively cheap too.
There were a few 'quirky' features but hey, no real issues so we had no complaints whatsoever.
Friendly feel not pretenscious. Spa facilities v good & stable bar food lovely . Would def stay again .
The place is looking a bit tired but this did not detract from our stay. Formal dining menu was a bit limited & service a bit old fashioned - lots of topping up of glasses , removal of cutlery / crockery - would rather been left too it - hsooy to pour my own water - if they had left the jug!
The room and friendly staff
The fact we could only stay for 1 night and not 2 as booked due to overbooking. Was booked into the Kings Arms, extra cost paid for by yourselves, but preferred Holbrook House. As it was my birthday on Saturday 8 November was quite disappointed that we had to leave the room we had booked.
The staff made us feel very welcome.
The garden rooms are just lovely with ease of getting to the spa and walking the dog. The cooked breakfast is one of the best we've had! Excellent! Staff are superb and really made Holbrook special.
Steam room was out of order which was a shame. Pool area in need of a little tlc.
Outstanding staff in all facilities, good meals. My room was spacious and featured a four-poster bed; the bathroom was very large, had a roomy shower, claw foot tub and plenty of hot water. A romantic setting, with incredibly helpful people. Lovely breakfast, graciously served.
My room was directly over the private dining room, which was incredibly noisy until around 11pm; amazingly, the same people were back and equally noisy in the morning. Everything's a bit threadbare and rundown, especially the bathroom. Weak wifi in the room and very poor lighting, so reading was difficult. A bit pricy for peeling wallpaper and thready towels.
The service and the food
Lack of a separate bar area.
The hotel was like stepping back in time and the staff couldn't have been more helpful. Sitting on the sofa in the lounge a drink and a roaring log fire, what more could you want.
Just a minor detail. Our room was up three flights of stairs and was very tired, it could do with a refurb, but very comfortable. We decided to have the bar menu not the dinner menu and were kept waiting and no nibbles for us with our drinks
Location and helpful staff
Lack of choice on the menu
The hotel went to extra mile to make our stay as comfortable as possible. The room had everything you could ask for and more!
House with real character. Comfy sofas and proper log fires
Bed was a bit small
We loved the fact that this is a privately owned rather than a slick 'chain' hotel. It was cozy and the food was excellent, we will definitely go there again when there is a special deal.
I can't think of any disadvantages. The decor is a bit shabby but the good things outweigh the bad.
the breakfast was very good.
it was an annexe and too far from the main house. the gym was a little intrusive.
Loved the nibbles with my drink whilst I looked at the menu. Piano was played also which was a nice surprise. Staff very pleasant and professional.
Price of the evening meal didnt match the price. I asked for medium rare and it came well done. It took a while for the replacement to arrive. The wallpaper where I sat was coming of the wall and the overall deco especially in my room was tatty and old.
The staff were excellent, the four poster room was beautiful and the food was great. And pool and steam room very inviting..
Food was great, maim areas of the house were lovely.
My bedroom needed some TLC. Think the hotel, which I believe is getting, could do with a little TLC
Everything! Very posh! Very quiet. We were on our way home from holiday and decided to stop one more night. We could not believe our luck when we found this place !
Hmmm. I guess the food was a bit expensive but.... Oh and there was a damp stain on the ceiling.
We were transferred to a lesser room than the one arranged.
Very large bedroom and lounge in the suite. Great value for money with excellent breakfast. Good sized swimming pool
No heating in the bedroom
Loved the location, the gardens and the general feel of the house.
There's absolutely nothing not to like.
The grounds; the building; the staff and the food.
Dinner Menu was the same on both nights. The remote placing of tables to provide privacy was a little 'overdone'. Lack of lift an inconvenience when room is on 3rd. Floor.
Breakfast was good exactly what you'd expect for made to order at £15.50 per person. The layout of the room was nice. Facilities are standard but they do the job. The house is wonderful and in a very convenient location.
Walls were too thin, could hear one sides tv and the other side having a normal level of conversation (there were no other rooms available - i contacted reception) We had been on a very long journey and had an 18 mnth old of which was ill, whilst there my partner became ill in the night - as the walls were so thin I'm certain the neighbours didn't appreciate hearing him throwing up. Also it wasn't up to the cleanliness standard you'd expect, it looked clean enough but there was a bottle top between the bed and cabinet, the hand towel had food on it, one of the robes was discoloured all down the neck and inside one side (not a small stain), the tray with the kettle on was caked in grease underneath (found out because I moved it, the bed had a few crumbs in.
