nothing in particular. We arrived late in the afternoon and there was no staff to let us in and the front door was shut, we had to call somebody to get a code to enter the building. We found an envelope with keys and a letter. The room was supposed to be double, but it was so small that we could hardly move, it was basically a single room with a double bed, which filled most of the room leaving no space to move. Thanks goodness there was a shower and loo. |

The hotel was good value for money. Staff were friendly when they were around and the breakfast was good although it could have been bigger. We stayed in room 5 which was nice and comfy with a nice decor. nothing really to complain about, but was not as close to city centre as suggested although the sightseeing bus does stop near by. |

The guy who showed up in the morning was the only nice thing about this place. He was friendly and helpful. For starters, we waited outside for a few hours in the rain because the staff did not show up at the appointed time. We only got in because a guest opened the door for us. The staff left us a phone number, but being from overseas, our phones don't work here, so that didn't help at all. Free wireless internet (as advertised) was not accessible until the staff actually showed up in the morning. |

The room we had, though small, was very comfortable and nicely presented. Staff were not always present on site but were very friendly and accomodating if needed. Just a short walk away from the city centre. I would definitely stay at Holmlea Guest House again when visiting York. My only complaint would be that we were awoke at around 6.00 am each morning of our stay by the guests staying in the room above us due to rather creaky floorboards! |

There as plenty of tea and coffee in the room and a nice breakfast in the mornig, the room was basic, but cosy. The house manager was helpful, as we could leave our bags there after checking out so we could have lunch and another look around before our jouney home. I was a little confused as the house manager asked us for cash for our room on departure. I thought with booking it online with you that the money would be coming out of my account but he said giving my card details on line was just to secure the room. |

The room was comfy and nice, excellent location for exploring York. The light in the bedroom did not work, the booking details said that a haridryer would be available but when I asked they said there wasn't one, well the bloke said that he was only covering and did not know. The only bloke we saw looked scruffy and came across that we were bothering him by paying upon our departure! |

"Cheap and cheerful" conveniently close to centre of York. Others have commented unfavourably but that may depend on your room. For the price, ours (Room 1) was fine, ample size, bed and en suite. Breakfast was OK. Good to have free parking and could get permit on first morning even though room was not ready (as would be expected at 10am!) Credit machine still not working! But if you know in advance it is easy enough to get cash out in town (don't use local ATMs - they charge!) |

Staff called us before arrival to confirm eta and to check whether we would be in a car. Friendly staff who asked if we knew the local area and checked if we knew how to get into the city centre. Offered help and a useful guide book/map. Good, tidy room. Small room & cramped shower - not much room around the 3/4 size bed, we had to eat breakfast on the bed. Thanks to other reviews I knew this was a possibility when I booked but due to the price & location the overall value was good. |

Close to the city centre. Close to shops and take-outs if needed. Cheap Communication from staff. I wasn't told I couldn't pay by debit/credit until it was time to pay, despite a sign indicating all major cards are accepted. I was made to walk to the nearest cash machine (that charges) to withdraw cash. One of the beds was far too small for an adult. Breakfast was poor. |

Fairly central location, could be well sited and organised for backpackers but expect price to high for such visitors. Had to phone to gain access, despite arriving at the appointed time. Didnt see any staff except to pay....cash only so still saying a problem with their debit card machine!!! Narrow beds which wee very soft and easily rolled off. And needed to sit on the bed to eat the limited 'continental' breakfast. 2 lights out in loo/shower all time we were there. Loo/shower very cold. |

Only plus point about this facility is guaranteed parking right in front, with the promised parking pass was included. Neighborhood was filled with low end B&B's. Staff wasn't present when we arrived at the listed check in time, we had to have a neighbor chase them down for us to get code to open the front door and get our own room key. We didn't see any one from the B&B until the next morning. Room was very musty, lots of perfume used to cover what smelled like moldy walls. B'fast left @ door was minimal. We moved out after 2 nights. Never again! |

Good proximity to city center, peaceful location and clean rooms. Our south facing room ( in the roof ) was a bit too stuffy and staff kept closing the window. The toilet paper in our bathroom was not replaced even when very low. We were only told on arrival that we could not pay by debit/credit card and had to pay with a large cash sum despite ringing the day before. |
