It was a very easy walk into the city centre and just round the corner were restuarants, a cafe, deli, bank, convenience store etc. When we got into bed on our first night we discovered two very long black hairs in our bed...neither myself or my husband has long black hair. We then noticed that part of the shower was held together with masking tape and the shower doors did not close properly. There was mould/scum in the corners of the shower doors. After a very poor breakfast of toast and yoghurt, we left our room at 10am on the Saturday and did not return til the early hours of Sunday morning. When we were getting dressed on Sunday morning we noticed that the sink was leaking and that toilet was not flushing properly. After a shower the water did not drain away. We checked out early as we felt our stay here was at an end. It was an incovenience rather than a relaxing weekend break. When we complained we were told that we had to appreciate that this was one of the cheapest b and bs in York. At £57.00 a night I do not think that is cheap. We were able to book a room at the Holiday Inn for the Sunday night for £69.00. It was total luxury compared to Holmlea guesthouse.

Quirky Breakfast of yoghurt and toast was served in the room. No dining room available and no choice of what you had for breakfast. No mirror in the room. No fire regulations displayed. Very basic.

We stayed for 2 nights mid-week and found the Holmlea excellent. Our room was clean and warm, the 24hr access useful and free parking a wonderful bonus. The breakfast is basic, toast, yoghurts and fruit juice but is freshly made at the time you choose. There is an ample supply of tea etc. The staff are nice and friendly but not intrusive. Would recommend Holmelea to anyone wanting accommodation within easy walking distance of the town centre. Not a single complaint .... excellent !

Me and my partner stayed for his birthday and really enjoyed out stay, the rooms were clean and comfortable, location perfect and staff very helpful on area and attractions on arrival. We thought the toast ect in bed was excellent as it gave it that personal touch. We will be staying again for my birthday in August. Many Thanks for a wonderful stay Sasha Green & Liam Ripley

Relaxed/self service approach. No frills accomodation which is okay when you want to be out & about. Located in an interesting suburb of York which was just a pleasant walk away(for us). Good shops nearby. Bathing facilities a bit limited and slippery shower. Please make toast with thick bread.

Clean and comfortable. And within very easy walking distance of the town centre. Breakfast in our rooms was a bit odd, and limited to only toast + yoghurt.

My partner and I came to York for our anniversary, we checked in and was told we could only pay in cash, which was the first downer. We booked a double room, which you expect to have a en suite, we arrived to find a private bathroom down the hall way!! Not cosy or relaxing having to plan ur pee before you go to bed. Besides that we went into town to get some dinner, I had a family tragedy and had to leave York asap, there was noone there to hand our key back too, and they still had the cheek to take money out of our account ( there card machine suddenly worked within a day!!)!!!! If we had stated we was told breakfast could only be served to our bedroom as no dining room, we didn't want to eat in our bed or on our floor! There was a horrible smell also wafting around the b n B. do not reccomend this place, not great there is noone on site after 12 midday!

Walking distance to the town and on the route for the open top city tour bus The en-suite shower room was tiny. No proper plumbing and the masserater toilet was very noisy and very smelly. No reception or staff on duty except in the morning to deliver toast, orange juice and yoghurt to the room and to change the beds. Was advised on arrival, by standard pre printed letter, that the credit card machine was out of order but hoped to be working by the time we left. It wasnt. Was told it was cash only and directed to a (chargable) cash point. Due to change availalbe and the hand written recipt book it was obvious they had no intention of taking payment by card.

I liked the location. The twin room was too small and not clean enough. It looked like an attic converted into a bedroom. My fiancee was facing a wall that looked like it had skin cancer. The Argos cupboard was not in a good condition and the shower was too small. The checkout time is way too early. The kitchen was locked which meant we could not use the fridge or the microwave. The breakfast was very basic.

Location was good. Just a brisk walk and you are in the centre. We had room No.2 Which was extremely small. The toilet was noisy. The breakfast is extremely basic and there is no where to eat it besides on the bed!

I liked the fact that visitors are quite independent and trusted as there is not usually anyone there so you have to follow instructions about your key and breakfast. It was quite conveniently located for the station and more than adequate for an overnight stay. Very reaosnably priced for such a comfortabel and well-equipped b & B. The stairs were a little steep.

It was comfortable and reasonable, very basic but for the price that was fair enough. The plumbing in the en suite left a lot to be desired, the hot tap ran at a trickle and the temperature of the shower fluctuated quite badly. Also I would not describe two bits of barely cooked toast and a Tesco value yoghurt as a continental breakfast! Finally the issue which really bothered me was that we booked by credit card and as far as we were concerned that's how we were going to pay. Upon arrival there was a note left on the bed telling us that their phone line was down and the card machine wasn't working. This had been down for a number of days apparently. I complained about this and suddenly the card machine fixed itself. I strongly suspect they just do not want to take card payments.
